GLAAD, the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization, today shared that Grammy award winning country music singer and songwriter Maren Morris has raised over $150K to date for GLAAD’s Transgender Media Program and Trans Lifeline with the “Lunatic” T-shirt launched last week.
In response to Tucker Carlson calling Maren Morris a “Lunatic Country Music Person” over defending trans youth, the country singer teamed up with @LAAD and Trans Lifeline to create a ‘Lunatic Country Music Person’ and the Peer Support & Crisis Hotline for trans youth: 877-565-8860 black tee.
“By publicly speaking out to support trans youth, country music superstar, Maren Morris is connecting with an audience who may be less familiar with the transgender community and the current wave of attacks on their rights. Not only is she using her platform and influence to help further the conversation and likely change hearts and minds, she is raising crucial funds which will go directly into GLAAD and Trans Lifeline’s work to support the trans community at a time when it’s needed more than ever,” said GLAAD Vice President of Communications & Talent, Anthony Allen Ramos.
“The way that transgender people are talked about on social media, especially by celebrities, has an impact on the wellbeing of trans folks, who already live in a society that does not want them to exist. Social marginalization and stigma cause us to have a significantly harder time accessing community support, safe housing, gainful employment, and affordable healthcare, which push many people in our community toward crisis. We are grateful to Maren Morris for not only calling out transphobia but also using her platform to support Trans Lifeline as we answer calls every day from trans people in crisis,” says Lauren Gray, Trans Lifeline’s Director of Advancement.
