For decades the term 420 has been associated with cannabis culture becoming the industry’s equivalent of Black Friday. However, unknown to many, the story of its origin is quite a fascinating one. The term 420 originated in 1971 at San Rafael High School in Marin County, California.
In 1971 a group of five teenage friends nicknamed the Waldos, due to their habit of hanging out by the wall outside the school, attended the San Rafael High School. The friend group would often meet next to the Louis Pasteur statue at 4:20 pm each week to scour the nearby Point Reyes Forest for a cannabis plant supposedly left behind by a Coast Guard member. Although they never found the hidden cannabis plant, they created a new term that cannabis smokers would adopt and turn into a famous day.
They would smoke throughout their search and often referred to it as the 420-Louis while reminding each other to meet up after school. According to Steve Capper, one of the Waldos, the term became like a telepathic means of communication that everyone in the circle would interpret as do you want to smoke? Are you high right now? Or, Do you have any? The term further spread thanks to the Waldos association with The Grateful Dead, a legendary rock band based at the time in the Marin County hills.
Today 420 has become synonymous with marijuana use and is celebrated by cannabis enthusiasts all around the globe.
