Toronto pop-rap duo M For The Movement, comprised of J.Vision and Mega Sean, release their new single “Takeover” featuring Snoop Dogg, Alia Renee, Price da Boss, DT The Artist, and Methadist. This electrifying track promises to be a game-changer in the music industry, with a star-studded collaboration featuring some of the biggest names in the industry.

M For The Movement has been making waves since the release of their first unofficial EP, “The Night Before Christmas,” under the pseudonym “The Night Before M” in December 2020. With over 50,000 streams in the first two weeks, the group quickly gained recognition for their unique sound and style.

Having shared the stage with industry giants like Rihanna, D12, Wayne Wonder, and more, M For The Movement is no stranger to delivering electrifying live performances. Their summer 2023 appearances opening for Sean Paul and closing their tour with Sean Kingston and Nelly solidified their status as a rising force in the music scene.

“Takeover” is not just a song; it’s an experience that combines the cinematic storytelling prowess of J. Vision with Mega Sean’s authentic and powerful lyrical delivery. The track seamlessly blends genres, creating a sound that is uniquely M For The Movement. With a diverse range of influences, the duo brings a fresh perspective to the music scene.

“We had obtained the Snoop Dogg verse some time ago and sat on it for good reason, thinking of the perfect game plan on how to execute a song with a name like his attached to it,” Mega Sean said. “With this feature we wanted to spread love and show unity and lead by example by collaborating with some of Toronto’s best up incoming talent in the Hip Hop scene to help bring the city of Toronto together with the biggest artists from Los Angeles and also show unity in the music business on a universal scale.”

“Takeover” is just a taste of what M For The Movement has in store. With an official album on the horizon, collaborations with JUNO Award-winning artist Choclair, and featuring platinum-selling artist Snoop Dogg, the group is poised to leave their mark on the landscape.

A New Tune For Mississauga Musicians With Musician Fair Pay Policy

Today in Council, the City of Mississauga’s first Musician Fair Pay Policy was approved, marking a significant step towards recognizing and valuing the contributions of musicians within the local art scene.

The policy is one of the first in Canada to set a minimum payment for musicians that perform at City-produced events and results directly from the City’s first Music Strategy: 2022-2026. The strategy identifies 32 actions over the next five years to support the growth and development of Mississauga’s music industry.

“Musicians are the foundation of a strong music economy and help contribute to our city’s lively music scene,” says Kristina Zietsma, Director, Culture and Recreation. “By setting these standards, Mississauga not only acknowledges the professional status of musicians, but also sets a precedent for other municipalities to follow. This policy aims to ensure that all performers are compensated fairly for their talents and efforts, fostering a more sustainable and vibrant cultural ecosystem for years to come.”

Noted in a corporate report, the policy applies to City-produced events where musicians are contracted by staff for live performances and outlines clear guidelines for equitable remuneration. It was developed in collaboration with the local music community and industry stakeholders, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of musicians’ needs. It also reflects a broader commitment to supporting the arts, recognizing the essential role that music plays in enriching the community’s cultural life. This transparent approach aims to eliminate ambiguity, ensuring that artists are compensated appropriately for their work.

Rates are based on a minimum scale set in the current Tariff of Fees by the Toronto Musicians’ Association, Local 149 (TMA) – the local union branch of the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada (AFM) for musicians in the Greater Toronto Area. The rates established by TMA 149 serve as the industry standard minimum payment rates for professional musicians.

The City’s Musician Fair Pay Policy will be posted in the coming weeks on the City’s website.

VAN HALEN Are Releasing Expanded Edition Of ‘For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge’

Van Halen’s ninth studio album, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, debuted at #1 and stayed there for three weeks during the summer of 1991. It was the third consecutive #1 album from singer Sammy Hagar, guitarist Eddie Van Halen, drummer Alex Van Halen, and bassist Michael Anthony.

An Expanded Edition of the album is arriving this summer from Rhino, including a newly remastered version of the original, along with previously unreleased audio and video (INSERT HYPERLINK) footage from Van Halen’s December 4, 1991, concert in Dallas, Texas.

FOR UNLAWFUL CARNAL KNOWLEDGE (EXPANDED EDITION) will be available on July 12 and includes two LPs, two CDs, and a Blu-ray. You can order it here.

Fans who pre-order the collection from Rhino.com will have an exclusive bundle featuring the release and a set of four 7” singles, including “Poundcake” / “Pleasure Dome,” “Top Of The World” / “In ‘N’ Out,” “Right Now” (Organ Version) / “Man On A Mission,” and “Right Now” (Guitar Version) / “The Dream Is Over” (Instrumental Version).

Originally released in June 1991, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge was an immediate success. The Expanded Edition includes previously unreleased alternate versions of “Right Now” and “The Dream Is Over.” The main attraction, however, has to be the previously unreleased concert footage from Van Halen’s December 4, 1991, performance in Dallas. Captured during the “For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge Tour,” this electrifying show is a powerful example of Van Halen’s unparalleled stage presence.

The show’s setlist mixes new songs (“Judgement Day” and “Poundcake”) with songs from 5150 and OU812 (“Best Of Both Worlds” and “Finish What Ya Started”). The band also played “Panama,” a hit from its time with singer David Lee Roth, plus two of Hagar’s hits, “I Can’t Drive 55” and “There’s Only One Way To Rock.”

In addition, the Blu-ray includes the official music videos for “Poundcake,” “Runaround,” “Right Now,” and “Top Of The World.” Finally, the remastered album is included in the set as a double LP, featuring an etching of the Van Halen logo on the fourth side.

Tickets are currently on sale and can purchased here.

The CMW Allan Slaight Humanitarian Award is presented annually to a Canadian artist, duo or group, in recognition of their social activism and benevolent support of humanitarian interests and causes.

Tom Wilson is a celebrated Canadian musician, famed storyteller and visual artist. The Tom Wilson Bursary was established in 2020 to support year one Indigenous students from Ontario secondary schools completing an undergraduate program in any faculty. It was established to help bring honour, love, respect and shine a light back on the culture Tom was introduced to later in life, and to honour the charitable nature that Bunny Wilson, who raised him, embodied throughout her life. This award is dedicated to empowering the next generation of indigenous people that will lead us into the future.

Wilson’s memoir Beautiful Scars, published by Penguin/Random House, has become a national bestseller. In his memoir, Wilson reveals the impact of discovering his Indigenous heritage. Shane Belcourt’s 2022 documentary film Beautiful Scars received a Canadian Screen Award nomination. The world premiere of the musical adaptation of Beautiful Scars was staged in Spring 2024 by Theatre Aquarius in Hamilton.

Musically, Wilson is best known for his work with Blackie & The Rodeo Kings and Lee Harvey Osmond, the latter receiving a 2020 Juno Award for the album “Mohawk”. In 2023, Wilson was appointed as a Companion of the Order of Canada.

In 1989 Wilson became the founder of the popular rock band Junkhouse. The band quickly grew in popularity and in 1993 signed a recording contract with Sony Music Canada. Lead by Wilson, Junkhouse skyrocketed in the 90s, producing three albums before disbanding. The style and success of Junkhouse has been an inspiration to many young Hamilton, Ontario artists. Wilson recorded his first solo album Planet Love (2001) for Sony Music.

It was also during this time that Wilson started dedicating more of his time and energy to his second passion, painting. His art show “Beautiful Scars: Mohawk Warriors, Hunters and Chiefs” premiered at the Art Gallery of Burlington and his work “The Mystic Highway” was commissioned by CARAS for a 30’ x 30’ reproduction legacy piece adorning John Street in Hamilton. The painting pays homage to the rich history of Hamilton musicians and performers from past.

In 1999, as a result of their shared love and admiration for one of Canada’s great musical treasures, the late Willie P. Bennett, Wilson along with Stephen Fearing and Colin Linden formed what would soon become the highly acclaimed roots music supergroup Blackie and the Rodeo Kings.

The Rodeo Kings have produced ten albums and have toured throughout North America and Europe. While Wilson created solo albums, Planet Love and Dog Years (2006), it was with his collaboration with producer and Cowboys Junkies founder Michael Timmins that he found and settled into a new voice. The result is Wilson’s genre defining, alter personae Lee Harvey Osmond. “Acid folk” was born in an old garage off Clinton Avenue in Toronto. With Timmins production and Wilson’s baritone, LHO has become the soundtrack and the voice for the art of Tom Wilson.

Each year, Slaight Communications and Canadian Music Week awards an outstanding Canadian artist, in recognition of their contribution to social activism and support of humanitarian causes. Previous CMW Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award recipients include Digging Roots, Abel “The Weeknd’ Tesfaye, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Gord Downie, Arcade Fire, RUSH, Sarah McLachlan, Chantal Kreviazuk & Raine Maida, Simple Plan, Bruce Cockburn, Bryan Adams and Nelly Furtado.

ABOUT ALLAN SLAIGHT: A pioneer of rock and roll, Allan parlayed his entrepreneurial flair with his knowledge of radio to create Canada’s largest privately owned multi-media company, Standard Broadcasting Corporation Limited. An inductee into the Broadcast Hall of Fame (1997), the recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Commerce from Ryerson Polytechnic University (2000), appointed a Member of the Order of Canada (2001), the recipient of the Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award (2005) for his contribution to the growth and development of the Canadian music industry, Allan has also maintained a lifelong interest in conjuring.

The Animals Release Early Catalog In Dolby Atmos For 60th Anniversary Of “House Of The Rising Sun”

On May 17, ABKCO Music & Records will release five albums by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees The Animals in the Dolby Atmos audio format for the first time ever. These include the British rock band’s first four US full lengths The Animals (1964), The Animals on Tour (1965), Animal Tracks (1965) and Animalization (1966), as well as the 22-track career-spanning collection The Animals Retrospective, originally released in 2004. Every title will come out simultaneously on the streaming platforms Apple Music, TIDAL and Amazon Music. This will happen 60 years almost to the day of the recording of their intercontinental chart-topping single “House of the Rising Sun” on May 18, 1964.

Developed by Dolby Laboratories in 2012, Dolby Atmos® is a patented technology that is a leap forward from surround sound. It goes beyond the ordinary listening experience and puts you inside the song in a spatial way, revealing every detail of the music with unparalleled clarity and depth. Grammy-nominated recording engineer Kenta Yonesaka helped mix The Animals albums in Dolby Atmos® with the utmost attention to detail. Yonesaka has worked with a wide range of artists including The Rolling Stones, Buddy Guy, Mark Ronson, Mariah Carey, Pharrell Williams and Kendrick Lamar.

“The idea of hearing our earlier work in Atmos spatial audio, it’s like stepping into a whole new dimension for me,” said The Animals frontperson Eric Burdon. “It’s like rediscovering the magic all over again. I mean, we poured our hearts and souls into those recordings, and now to hear them brought to life in such an immersive way, it’s like a dream come true. The quality and depth of the playback experience, it’s everything.”

Formed in Newcastle by Eric Burdon from the ashes of the Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo, The Animals were known for their hard driving, R&B-influenced sound and became a hit-making machine on both sides of the Atlantic right out of the gate. Their self-titled 1964 album includes the #1 US and #1 UK charting “House of the Rising Sun,” and was made in an era when they were “the most important and successful British export after the Beatles,” as asserted by Rolling Stone’s David Fricke. Despite its title, their February 1965 follow-up The Animals on Tour contains studio recordings and features the Top 20 single “I’m Crying.” Animal Tracks was released just six months later, in the same calendar year. As was customary for American versions of British records, hit singles were packed into it—“Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” (originally recorded by Nina Simone the previous year), Sam Cooke’s “Bring It On Home to Me” and the Mann/Weil-penned “We Gotta Get Out of This Place,” the latter of which became a de facto anthem for U.S. Armed Forces G.I.s deployed to Vietnam. 1966’s Animalization, released during the band’s final year of existence, saw original producer Mickie Most replaced by Tom Wilson (Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, the Velvet Underground, The Mothers of Invention). There is no shortage of Top 40 material, from “Don’t Bring Me Down” (written for The Animals by Gerry Goffin and Carole King), Ma Rainey’s “See See Rider” and the Animals’ re-imagining of a prison work song originally recorded by American folklorist Alan Lomax, “Inside-Looking Out.”

Spanning the years 1964-1970, The Animals Retrospective contains all fourteen US Top 40 hits by The Animals and late ‘60s lineup Eric Burdon & The Animals, including “When I Was Young,” “San Franciscan Nights,” “Monterey” and “Sky Pilot.” The set is capped by the 1970 smash hit “Spill the Wine” by Eric Burdon & War.
