Craft Latino Commemorates 60 Years Of Fania Records With A Global Year-Long Celebration

2024 marks the 60th anniversary of the legendary New York label Fania Records, one of the most significant Latin labels in the world, musically and culturally. In the ’60s, Fania was a pioneer in creating and spreading the sound of salsa music from New York City to the globe. In addition to salsa, Fania is the definitive home for genres such as Latin big band, Afro-Cuban jazz, boogaloo and Latin soul. Its roster of artists includes countless music legends, such as Johnny Pacheco, Willie Colón, Héctor Lavoe, Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Cheo Feliciano and Rubén Blades, among many others. In 1968, the creation of the international supergroup known as the Fania All-Stars, a vital force in Latin music, established the label’s signature musical style, which became known as the “Fania Sound.” Today, Fania’s legacy is just as meaningful to Latin music as Stax and Motown to soul or Prestige and Blue Note to jazz. It remains a cultural beacon, illuminating a powerful American immigrant story that is as timely today as when the label launched. To celebrate Fania’s legacy on this special milestone, Craft Latino will release over a dozen remastered 180-gram vinyl reissues, over two dozen remastered digital albums, many of which will debut in hi-res digital, a singles box set and a variety of content throughout the year, including curated playlists, artist spotlights and live events across New York, Los Angeles, Miami and London.

Kicking off the year-long celebration and available now is a newly remastered reissue for La Gran Fuga (The Big Break), the 1970 masterpiece from the magnificent salsa duo Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe. The Gold-certified sixth collaboration has been newly remastered, featuring (AAA) lacquers cut from the original master tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and pressed on 180-gram vinyl, with a classic tip-on jacket and, as an added bonus, an 11” x 22” insert featuring Izzy Sanabria’s famous cover art—an FBI wanted poster with the bandleader’s mugshot—which took inspiration from Colón’s “Malo” alter-ego. La Gran Fuga is also finally available in 192/24 hi-res digital audio on all major music platforms—listen here.

Other vinyl reissues coming in 2024 include renowned recordings (available for pre-order now) such as Joe Cuba Sextet’s long-out-of-print debut album on Tico Records, Vagabundeando! Hangin’ Out (60th-anniversary edition), and the Fania All-Stars 50th-anniversary edition of the Latin-Soul-Rock album, which features live recordings from the band’s 1973 concerts at New York’s Yankee Stadium and Puerto Rico’s Roberto Clemente Coliseum with guest artists Jorge “Malo” Santana, Manu Dibango, Billy Cobham, Jan Hammer and more.

September 15th marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, a fitting moment to unveil details about the upcoming Fania singles box set this Fall, Fania 45s: the Latin Sound of New York. This long-awaited set will feature some of the most celebrated singles by some of Fania’s most-loved artists, including Johnny Pacheco, Celia Cruz, Joe Bataan, Willie Colón, Héctor Lavoe, Ray Barretto, Ismael Rivera, Pete Rodriguez and Eddie Palmieri. It will include archival images, ephemera and in-depth liner notes in English and Spanish by New York–based music historian, author and producer Aurora Flores.

Founded in 1964 by Dominican bandleader Johnny Pacheco and his attorney Jerry Masucci, Fania Records was a label that started from their mutual passion for Latin music. Together, they created a powerhouse label with a signature sound: the apex of tropical music, combined with the swing of big band jazz and the gritty vibe of American R&B, jazz, funk and soul. The label provided an artistic haven for a young generation of musicians who were inspired to experiment with new musical formats. The label started small, with the first official record release Cañonazo (Fania 321). In 1967, Masucci bought Pacheco’s share of the label, including its subsidiary labels. When Masucci passed in 1997, the label assets remained tied up for years, and in 2005, it was sold to V2 Records and Emusica. In 2018, Fania Records’ assets were sold to Concord, including 1.2K album masters, 15K songs and 7K compositions.

Fania’s rich master catalog also includes the Pete Rodriguez’s boogaloo classic “I Like It Like That” which was sampled by Cardi B in her #1 hit “I Like It. In 2022, Bad Bunny sampled Ismael Rivera’s “Controversia” in the track “El Apagon” from his album Un Verano Sin Ti. Additionally, three Fania Recordings, Celia & Johnny by Celia Cruz and Johnny Pacheco, Azucar Pa’ Ti by Eddie Palmieri and Live at Yankee Stadium by the Fania All-Stars, appear in the National Recording Registry, a list of sound recordings that “are culturally, historically or aesthetically important, and/or inform or reflect life in the United States.”

Throughout 2024, Craft Latino will take a deeper look at the label’s history and incredible roster of talent through special video and editorial content and playlists. Giveaways, additional releases, and live summer and fall Fania 60th events will be announced later in the year.

DJ Shadow Announces Second Leg of 2024 Tour Dates

On the heels of a highly successful and sold out 30+ date headlining tour this past winter, DJ Shadow has announced a second leg of dates that will bring him across Europe/UK this summer and North America in October to celebrate his latest album Action Adventure. Starting October 3 in Kansas City, the North American Action Adventure Tour stops in cities that the pioneering DJ and producer hasn’t played in years. Tickets go on sale to the general public this Friday at 10AM local time. See below for the full itinerary and go here for tickets and pre-sale information: http://djshadow.com

Action Adventure – released in October on Mass Appeal / Liquid Amber – features 14 mostly instrumental tracks that represent a continued evolution for DJ Shadow. His eighth studio album, it’s a thrilling new addition to an influential body of work defined by a restless ear, always searching to rescue some forgotten gem from the dustbin of music history or a fresh blast of sound from the cutting edge.

Tied to the new album release, Shadow was profiled by Stereogum and SPIN, and interviewed by Zane Lowe on his Apple Music show. Additional album coverage includes The Fader, Billboard, NPR’s New Music Friday and more. He also sat down for a Q&A with Zane Lowe at the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles, was interviewed on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, World Cafe and his KEXP live performance session just debuted last week. His first proper tour since 2017 kicked off in January of this year, and included sold out headline performances at Webster Hall in New York City and The Fonda in Los Angeles.

Leading up to the release of Action Adventure, Shadow released music videos for album singles “Ozone Scraper” and “You Played Me” – two songs that show off the synth-heavy sonic worlds that he explores throughout the record. “You Played Me” was the result of serendipity, dropping the needle on an a capella track of a record he’d never listened to, over a beat that recalls a lost early 80s R&B classic. He says of the track, “it’s one of my favorite songs I’ve ever made.” The music video was filmed in a still-operating cassette tape manufacturer in Missouri – National Audio Company – and Shadow has been hiding cassette tapes of the single at indie record stores worldwide.

DJ Shadow has been releasing music for over thre decades. His landmark debut Endtroducing…..was released in 1996, is considered one of the finest albums of that decade, and continues to influence new generations of artists. In thepast few years he’s reached some tremendous new heights. 2016’s The Mountain Will Fall featured “Nobody Speak” with Run The Jewels. That single has long since gone gold, has nearly100 million streams on Spotify, and continues to seep into the public consciousness as a soundtrack to countless spots in film and on TV. He returned in 2019 with Our Pathetic Age -a double LP featuring De La Soul (performing “Rocket Fuel” together on Jimmy Kimmel Live), Nas, Run the Jewels, Pusha T, Inspectah Deck and Ghostface among others.

Naomi Judd Estate Announces Virtual Exhibit Featuring Rare, Never-Before-Seen Artifacts From Her Legendary Career

Today, in collaboration with Definitive Authentic and Mercy Community Healthcare, The Naomi Judd Estate has announced a series of virtual exhibits of rare and never-before-seen artifacts from the life of activist, philanthropist, and American cultural icon Naomi Judd. The first collection, entitled ‘Artist’ will be publicly available on May 1st – the two-year anniversary of The Judds induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Country music’s highest honor. This is the first installment of five archival collections to be rolled out throughout 2024, with each forthcoming collection highlighting a different area of Naomi’s incredible life and work.

In the words of her daughter Ashley, Naomi Judd was “a legend and an icon that left country music (and the world) better than she found it”. Working in partnership with archival platform Definitive Authentic, The Naomi Judd Estate has curated a virtual exhibit of rare items that spotlight the impact of Naomi’s creative work on country music and American culture at large. Featuring behind-the-scenes photos, awards, a personal stage map with handwritten notes, a shooting script for the “Grandpa” music video, countless well-wishes from country music luminaries, and more, the Naomi Judd ‘Artist’ artifact collection frames the icon as not only a beloved musician, but a figure whose groundbreaking vision went well beyond the recording studio as evidenced by her lifelong support of numerous philanthropic causes. In tribute to that philanthropic spirit, a portion of the proceeds from this exhibit (and the following exhibits) will be donated to The Naomi Judd Mental Health Clinic: A Bridge to Hope – a brand new mental health wing at Mercy Community Healthcare in Franklin, TN. The facility includes a larger mental health area with counseling/psychiatric rooms, a Parent-Child Interactive Therapy Room, group rooms, a waiting room, and prayer area. The new building brings all services under one roof as Mercy is committed to treating the whole person – body + mind + spirit – for true healing in a faith-based environment.

Speaking about the release, Naomi’s husband Larry Strickland stated: “It is such a blessing for me to honor my wife’s life by giving the fans a look into the detailed archives that Naomi kept all of these years. I’d often walk through the barn and wonder why she insisted on keeping all of these objects that at the time seemed to be collecting dust; however, I now see that these were more than just things. These were her memories… our memories. These releases are our family’s gift to you, her public, for being there for all of us for the past 40 years. I hope they bring you a sense of Peace & Hope in regards to her memory and the Legacy that is Naomi Judd.”

Director of Hill Entertainment Group + Naomi Judd Estate Archivist Kodi Chandler also noted: “Naomi kept meticulous records of photographs and artifacts. Through these we are able to explore how she viewed herself. It is our honor to help the family curate these collections for release. This first collection, simply titled “Artist” is how she documented her time as she was best known, as one half of The Judds. The subsequent collections introduce and revisit other facets of Naomi that we can’t wait to share with those who meant the most to her, the fans.”

The release of the Naomi Judd ‘Artist’ collection kicks off a packed 2024 for Judd fans around the world, with several exciting announcements coming in the near future. Notably, there will be the first-ever vinyl release in the US of The Judds final studio album Love Can Build A Bridge (1990), to include lyric sheets and never before seen photos from Naomi’s personal scrapbooks, among other exciting projects.

Imagine Dragons’ sixth studio album LOOM represents the pinnacle of their artistic journey of self-discovery and marks the best body of work they’ve ever made. LOOM, produced entirely by Imagine Dragons and their longtime collaborators Mattman and Robin, finds the perfect balance between the classic sounds that have made them superstars and the freshness that brought them joy in the studio. Featuring 9 brand new tracks including hit single “Eyes Closed”, LOOM signifies new beginnings on the horizon – the excitement for a new day, moments yet to come.

Last year, the members of Imagine Dragons found themselves with a rare and well-deserved break from the road—perhaps their longest in many years. So, they made the most of it by devoting that time to family and friends. Catalyzed by this respite with a refreshed perspective, the band rallied together in the studio and mined the same well of inspiration that fed their most beloved material. The musicians reflected on the past in order to catapult into a future where stylistic boundaries have disappeared entirely and anything is possible creatively. This journey has brought them to their most dynamic and definitive body of work to date, LOOM.

To herald LOOM, the band recently shared their soaring new anthem entitled “Eyes Closed.” The track illuminates their penchant for boundary-breaking. Stretching the limits of the soundscape almost to the breaking point, they harness a burst of energy with a rafter-reaching refrain primed to soar on the upcoming summer tour.

It’s the year of the Dragons…

Imagine Dragons continue to redefine rock in the 21st century. Filling stadiums, crafting cloud-rattling anthems, and breaking records at every turn, diamond-certified GRAMMY Award-winning Las Vegas quartet Imagine Dragons occupy rarified air as one of the biggest rock bands in the world. Tallying cumulative sales of 74 million album equivalents, 65 million digital songs, and over 160 billion streams, they stand out as the only band in history to earn four RIAA Diamond singles, namely “Radioactive” (16x-platinum), “Believer” (13x-platinum), “Thunder” (12x-platinum) and “Demons” (11x-platinum). Since emerging in 2009, they’ve scored five consecutive Top 10 debuts on the Billboard Top 200 with Night Visions [2012] (7x-platinum) (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), Smoke+Mirrors [2015] (platinum) (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), Evolve [2017] (triple-platinum) (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), Origins [2018] (platinum)(KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), and Mercury – Act 1 [2021]( KIDinaKORNER/Interscope). With the release of Mercury – Act 2 (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope) in 2022, they completed their first double-album opus produced by the legendary Rick Rubin. The hit single “Bones,” featured on Mercury Act 2, went to number one at Alternative Radio and remains in the Global Top 50 on Spotify. The band’s hit collaboration with East Atlanta-based rapper J.I.D, “Enemy,” has racked up billions of global streams and landed at #6 on the IFPI Global Singles Chart for 2022. Dominating radio, they remain one of only four bands to ever achieve consecutive Top 5 singles at Alternative radio, and the only band to repeat this feat. Most recently, Imagine Dragons made history on Spotify, as “Bad Liar” became their 10th song to surpass 1 billion streams. The band now holds the crown for the group with most billion-plus streamed songs, becoming the first in the platform’s history to have ten songs reach this milestone. Meanwhile, Imagine Dragons’ music videos for hits “Thunder” and “Believer” have garnered an astounding 2 billion YouTube views, while videos for “Radioactive” and “Demons” have surpassed over 1 billion views. They’ve collaborated with everyone from Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, and Wiz Khalifa to Avicii and film composer Hans Zimmer. Giving back, they’ve raised millions for various causes, including their pediatric cancer charity the Tyler Robinson Foundation, and frontman Dan Reynolds’ LOVELOUD Foundation and festival in support of LGBTQ+ youth. In 2022, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky named them ambassadors for UNITED 24, which benefits humanitarian aid in Ukraine. Imagine Dragons earned an impressive four nominations for the 2022 American Music Awards including “Favorite Pop Duo or Group,” “Favorite Rock Artist,” “Favorite Rock Album” and “Favorite Rock Song.” The band was also nominated for “Group of 2022” for the 2022 People’s Choice Awards. Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats Announce Highly Anticipated New Album ‘South Of Here’ Set For Release June 28

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats today announce their fourth full-length studio album South of Here, set for release June 28, 2024, via Stax. Ahead of the album, the band has shared the first single, “Heartless.”

Produced by Brad Cook (Waxahatchee, Bon Iver, Kevin Morby) and recorded at Sonic Ranch outside El Paso, Texas, South of Here reckons with a lifetime of pain and trauma and transforms it into a stirring, soul-baring rumination on love, loss, hope and resolve.

Following And It’s Still Alright, Rateliff’s beloved 2020 solo LP, and The Future, The Night Sweats’ acclaimed 2021 release, South of Here seamlessly blends both sides of his immense talent: emotionally potent, vivid storytelling and the rugged, R&B revivalism that has powered the band to world-wide acclaim over the past decade.

Across 11 original tracks, all written by Rateliff & performed by The Night Sweats: Nathaniel Rateliff, Luke Mossman, Joseph Pope III, Mark Shusterman, Patrick Meese, Daniel Hardaway, Jeff Dazey, and Andreas Wild, the band, in peak form, plays with intuitive beauty while Cook’s production captures the group’s soulful fire with immediacy and purpose.

“Brad was a great producer to write alongside. This album is a look into my own struggle with anxiety, insecurity and also stories of my life. He encouraged me to take responsibility for my own narrative in the songs and to write about what’s happening in my own life,” Rateliff notes. “These recordings were done together in a room with my closest friends. I hope these songs and stories give you an opportunity to better understand your own struggles whatever they may be.”

Over the course of his career, Nathaniel Rateliff has generated widespread acclaim from critics and musicians alike. Robert Plant recently placed him among the next generation of greats.

“He is one of these guys that will just carry the torch. Beautiful songwriting, beautiful singing, great delivery and he is a magnificent guy to go with it.”

Borne from the rock clubs in and around Denver, CO., Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats have released three LPs, two EPs, and a live album. Since their 2015 self-titled breakthrough album, the band has established themselves as generational talents through their ecstatic and dynamic live performances and a growing catalog of essential studio recordings. South of Here is another mighty leap forward. Bound by the struggle for identity and the search for belonging, it reverberates with the understanding that we’re all in this beautiful mess together.
