My Next Read: “The Ballad of Speedball Baby : A Memoir” By Ali Smith

The Ballad of Speedball Baby is the thrilling, darkly hilarious, and heart-wrenchingly vulnerable story of Ali Smith’s coming-of-age in ’90s New York as she commits to the messy, exhilarating life of a musician and must survive the slings and arrows society reserves for women who refuse to comply.

As an only child reeling from the demolition of her parents’ toxic marriage, the New York City underground music scene offers a young Ali a different family of misfits and talented outsiders to belong to.

She becomes the bass player for edgy band Speedball Baby, a decision that will take her around the world—from onstage at the legendary CBGBs to the red-light district of Amsterdam. She’s often the only girl in a broken-down tour van, being strip-searched at the Croatian border, chased by lunatics, and navigating the seedy underbelly of a male-dominated music scene full of addiction, violence, and misogyny—all while keeping her sharp wit and dark humor intact.

Rimmed with heavy black eyeliner and smelling faintly of cheap booze, The Ballad of Speedball Baby is a pulse-quickening, unpredictable ride through the ’90s music scene—alternately terrifying, hilarious, and painfully evocative—as well as a love letter to the power of female solidarity.

Play is for Everyone with Sensory Inclusion Certification at LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Toronto

The LEGO Group, LEGO House and the LEGO Foundation today announce a range of long-term initiatives designed to support and celebrate neurodivergent children and adults to mark the start of World Autism Acceptance Month.

Colette Burke, Chief Commercial Officer at the LEGO Group, comments:
“All LEGO entities are united by our mission to inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow and a belief that the benefits of play are equally critical to all children. This fuels our exploration of how to make the LEGO experience more inclusive and welcoming for everyone.“

“We know the LEGO System in Play is enjoyed by neurodivergent fans of all ages and we want to support, inspire, and celebrate their creativity. We hope that the changes to our stores, publications and family attractions will have a positive impact and help embrace the diverse needs and strengths of our fans globally. There will always be more to do, and we’re committed to working with fans and experts to implement initiatives that can help make a difference in building a more inclusive world.”

KultureCity is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing accessibility in public spaces for individuals with sensory needs and invisible disabilities. It certifies locations that provide visitors with an inclusive experience through staff training and access to support tools.

The certification serves as a reassurance to visitors that staff at certified venues understand how sensory needs vary and how best they can help ensure everyone feels welcome and supported in their visit. It also means that sensory bags are always available to checkout at no cost during visits. These contain items such as noise reducing headphones, fidget tools, visual cue cards, KultureCity branded lanyards and strobe reduction glasses*.

  • All LEGO stores in the U.S. and Canada will be KultureCity Sensory Inclusive™ Certified in April. The ambition is to expand certification to more countries later in the year.
  • LEGO House already carries KultureCity Sensory Inclusive Certification. Located in Billund, Denmark, LEGO House is the ultimate LEGO fan experience and home of the LEGO brick and features unique Experience Zones, rooftop playgrounds and a LEGO Museum. It is the first experience centre in the Nordics to receive KultureCity certification. It also participates in the globally-recognised Sunflower Lanyard scheme for people with hidden disabilities. In January, LEGO House unveiled a new experience in the History Collection, which features an interactive timeline with animations supported by audio, braille, International Sign and tangible wooden models to increase accessibility.

KultureCity signage indicating the Sensory Inclusive Certification will be visible at each location once team training is complete and supportive sensory bags are available. Social stories will be available on the KultureCity app to help guests prepare for their visit.

Isabella age 11 and autistic reflected on the changes and what they mean to her:
“When I’m in a crowded place or noisy area, I feel nervous. The [noise reducing] headphones really help well because it just cancels out most loud noises. It gives me a little bit less stress. If there’s someone really close to me and I feel like I’m really nervous, I’ll just pop a fidget out and just play with it to calm myself down.”

“I like having [noise reducing] headphones and fidgets in the LEGO store because it’s just going to make me feel really more welcome.”
Samantha, mum to Isabella said about the certification:
“When I heard about this project, I just beamed. I was so excited. I’ve been waiting for this – to just be able to go to the store, where the employees understand, and the store is ready for my child. It’s exciting. Having KultureCity involved gives me so much confidence that my child will enjoy the experience and the sensory bags will make us come to the store more often.”

Sean, autistic AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO play) also commented:
“To have sensory bags in a LEGO store when I was a kid would’ve changed my whole perspective on the communities I could be a part of.”

“Being able to experience the LEGO store at my own pace would have allowed me to connect to so many other people and LEGO fans, and truly feel like I belong. This move will allow for people like me, a full-grown adult, to experience everything the store has to offer and let children visiting the store have their own perspective on their own lives changed in a positive way. That’s something that can’t be replaced.”

The LEGO Group invited inclusion experts Special Networks to audit its LEGO Life magazine to understand how to make it more welcoming for neurodivergent readers. Special Networks reviewed two years’ worth of editions and praised the magazine’s clear language, diverse representation, and user-friendly layouts. However, they proposed a range of improvements that have been included in the latest edition (Issue 2 2024) and will continue to feature in future editions. These include:

  • Numbering the boxes used in cartoons to make them easier to follow.
  • Ensuring consistent and meaningful use of visual symbols.
  • Planning content to suit varied abilities and interests.
  • Having consistency in placement of useful items, such as prompts for activity answers.

My Morning Jacket And Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats Unite For ‘Eye To Eye’ Tour

My Morning Jacket and Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats are joining forces for a very special co-headline tour. The “Eye To Eye Tour,” produced by Live Nation, will see the two acclaimed bands playing equal-length sets and swapping performance order with each show. The Trek gets underway September 10 at Wilmington, NC’s Live Oak Bank Pavilion at Riverfront Park and then continues through the month.

Tickets will be available starting with an artist presale that begins Tuesday, March 26 at 10:00 am (local). Registration is available now exclusively at www.eyetoeyetour.com. Additional presales will continue throughout the week ahead of the general onsale which begins on Friday, March 29 at 10:00 am (local). Complete details and performance order can be found at www.eyetoeyetour.com.

“We were lucky enough to see Nathaniel and some of the Night Sweats at Preservation Hall in New Orleans some years ago-our minds were blown, our hearts were opened, and we got swept up in the joy of it all,” said My Morning Jacket’s Jim James. We are so happy to share the stage with these fine folks for a run full of peace, love, music, and fun!”

“We are long-time lovers of My Morning Jacket, and over the years have grown a close friendship,” shares Nathaniel Rateliff. “It’s so special to become friends with musicians and peers that you admire and we’re looking forward to bringing our love for each other on the road.”

My Morning Jacket, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, and the non–profit REVERB are partnering on this co-headline tour to reduce the environmental footprint of their tour and take action on the climate crisis. In addition to a comprehensive tour sustainability program and fan Action Village at each show, the bands will be supporting REVERB’s climate portfolio which funds projects that measurably reduce greenhouse gas pollution, address climate justice, and directly decarbonize the music industry.

Hailed by The New York Times as “the kings of expand-your-mind, religious-experience rock,” My Morning Jacket has undergone seismic transformations and restless explorations to grow from southern misfits to one of the most acclaimed and beloved bands of their generation. The band has released nine studio albums thus far, with 2008’s Evil Urges, 2011’s Circuital, and 2015’s The Waterfall receiving three consecutive GRAMMY® Award nominations for “Best Alternative Album.” 2020’s The Waterfall II made history with the hit single, “Feel You,” which reached #1 at Triple A radio outlets nationwide and on Billboard’s “Adult Alternative Songs” chart – My Morning Jacket’s first-ever #1 on a Billboard songs chart. Along the way, My Morning Jacket earned a reputation as a dynamic, life-altering live experience, building a devout worldwide fanbase through sold-out headline tours and top-billed festival sets. The band’s most recent release, 2021’s My Morning Jacket, saw them fusing their singular songcraft with the hypnotic intensity of their legendary live show more fully than ever before.

Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats are one of the most recognizable forces in contemporary rock ’n’ roll. Born from Denver rock clubs, the band now boasts platinum and gold-certified records within their catalog of three studio LPs, two EPs, and a live album. As described by Rolling Stone, “Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats make a damn good argument for why folk-soul is so important.”

Since their 2015 self-titled debut the band has established a reputation as the rare generational band who balances ecstatic live shows with engrossing and widely acclaimed rich records. NPR Music exhorts, “Rateliff isn’t simply resurrecting the ghost of R&B past like some garden-variety neo-soul necromancer: He’s out to shake the sheets, sermonize and get downright elemental.”

Their iconic live performances are wide ranging and include revving up stadium crowds for The Rolling Stones to sold out arenas to appearing on Saturday Night Live and NPR’s Tiny Desk. As the LA Times raves, “The soul-R&B-rock collective…ranks as one of the most thrilling arrivals of recent years, its reputation stoked considerably by the group’s incendiary live shows.” Rateliff has seen widespread acclaim from critics and musicians alike, as Robert Plant recently named Rateliff a leader of the next generation of greats. “He is one of these guys that will just carry the torch. Beautiful songwriting, beautiful singing, great delivery and he is a magnificent guy to go with it.”

Drive-by Truckers Announce ‘Southern Rock Opera Revisited’ Tour

Drive-By Truckers will celebrate their landmark third studio album, Southern Rock Opera, with a wide-ranging North American tour. Presented by Live Nation and recently announced in an exclusive Q&A with Garden & Gun Magazine, the Southern Rock Opera Revisited 2024 Tour – which will see Drive-By Truckers performing the acclaimed 2001 album along with fan favorites and other songs from across their classic canon – gets underway June 7 at Indianapolis, IN’s Egyptian Room at Old National Centre and then continues into early July. The headline run will resume October 16 at Washington, DC’s Warner Theatre and then travel through a very special tour finale set for November 24 at Nashville, TN’s historic Ryman Auditorium. Highlights include two-night stands at San Francisco, CA’s The Fillmore (June 28-29), Minneapolis, MN’s Uptown Theater (October 25-26), Chicago, IL’s House of Blues (November 1-2), and Asheville, NC’s The Orange Peel (November 7-8).

DBT is thrilled to announce The Southern Rock Opera Revisited 2024 Tour. It’s been 23 years since the release of the album that drastically changed our lives and 22 years since we performed it (more or less) straight through in near entirety. We’ll be hitting the road, Three Guitars blazing, and telling y’all a story. It’s an album we spent years writing and learning to play and then recording (in the upstairs of a uniform shop in downtown Birmingham AL). It was initially released on 9/11/2001 (and later reissued by Lost Highway in the summer of 2002).

A lot has happened in the decades since it came out, both to the band and to the world we live in. We feel that the record, while somewhat timeless, also has a current timeliness to it considering the social and political issues of today. Instead of performing it as if it’s still 2000AD, we want to make it our own, reflecting who we all are now in 2024. It’s going to be intense, but also a hell of a lot of fun and this time we’re offering a very special Southern Rock Opera Revisited VIP Experience that includes a soundcheck party and some special SRO Revisited limited edition items. VIP tickets are on sale starting today!

We’ll be playing songs from the original release, plus a small handful of songs that pertain to its themes and points of view, plus a short encore set that will be different each night. It’ll be a different and very special show, and very likely the last time we’ll ever do it so DON’T MISS IT! DBT-Southern Rock Opera Revisited 2024 Tour.

“It ain’t about the past.” – Patterson Hood (DBT)

On September 11, 2001, Drive-By Truckers self-released Southern Rock Opera on their own tiny Soul Dump label, pressing 5000 copies of their third studio album with a tiny budget they raised by crowdsourcing (as it’s come to be known), raising the money online from fans turned investors. They ended up selling 10,000 copies independently without any sort of distribution, mostly sold at shows during the massive tour that they booked themselves. A tour that began with 75 shows in 90 days and that stretched well into the following year.

The success of the Southern Rock Opera Tour and the album that inspired it led to Drive-By Truckers getting proper management and being picked up by High Road Touring, who have been their agents ever since. The band signed their very first record deal with Lost Highway Records, who reissued the album in the summer of 2002 as the tour stretched to the end of the year. A trajectory that saw the band moving from small dive bars and sleeping on floors, to playing bigger rooms and theaters, and touring on a bus.

Southern Rock Opera became the first of a string of albums that has seen Drive-By Truckers morph and continue to thrive for nearly a quarter of a century. The critically acclaimed band is well known for its high energy and cathartic shows, as well as for a prolific string of albums that combine astute politics, Southern storytelling, and an eclectic approach to rock ‘n’ roll that has been played at thousands of shows on three continents.

Always restless and never a band keen on repeating itself, people have asked Drive-By Truckers for years about the possibility of another Southern Rock Opera Tour to no avail. DBT co-founder Mike Cooley, never one to mince words, has long responded that it should only be done when it could be performed “on ice!” Meanwhile, Southern Rock Opera has continued to sell, eventually recouping its original record deal, and often appearing on lists of the best albums of the 2000s.

Although the band still holds onto the dream of Southern Rock Opera On Ice, it’s no coincidence that 2024 is also an election year. Another year full of some of the same contentious issues that inspired much of the original album’s content. The Southern Rock Opera Revisited 2024 Tour will see Drive-By Truckers celebrating their milestone album, not as a relic of another time and place, but as a continued conversation about where we came from, and where we are headed in this crazy time in history that we currently reside in. As Drive-By Truckers say in the album’s pivotal “The Southern Thing” – “It ain’t about the past.”
