Metric and Death Cab For Cutie Announce Co-Headlining “Lights On The Horizon” Canadian Tour

Canadian indie rock icons Metric and Atlantic recording group Death Cab for Cutie have teamed up for a 2016 cross-Canada co-headlining tour. The bands will embark on the “Lights on the Horizon” tour on March 19 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, hitting 10 cities before wrapping up at the Thunderbird Sports Centre in Vancouver on April 1.

Pre-sales for all shows will begin today at 10 AM local time on the bands’ web sites – http://www.ilovemetric.com/presale-tickets/ and http://bit.ly/1HOTPbt. General on-sale will begin Friday at 10 AM local time.

After a resounding and relentless international tour schedule in support of PAGANS IN VEGAS, Metric returns home to Canada for the first run of national shows since the release of their latest album this September.

“We are so happy that everything fell into place for Death Cab for Cutie and Metric to do this tour of Canada together,” says Emily Haines. “Nick Harmer and I worked on creating the poster artwork together, and while we were on the phone riffing on imagery and ideas for what to call the tour we decided on Lights On The Horizon. I was standing on a rooftop at sunset looking out at the Statue of Liberty at the time and it just felt right. The name expressed our shared desire to focus on what lies ahead, creatively and personally, so we went with it.”

“We’re so excited about touring with Metric, a band that we’ve been fans of for a long time, and also to be playing shows in a number of Canadian cities that we’ve never been to previously,” says Death Cab for Cutie singer-guitarist Ben Gibbard.

Death Cab for Cutie are touring in support of their eighth studio album, KINTSUGI, which has been nominated for a 2016 Grammy Award in the Best Rock Album category. The album debuted at #1 on the Digital Album Chart and #5 on the Top Album Chart in Canada upon its release earlier this year.

Duran Duran Announce North American Tour With Special Guest Nile Rodgers

In what is promising to be one of the most eagerly anticipated tours of 2016, multi-platinum superstars Duran Duran have announced that they will hit the road for an extensive North American arena and amphitheater tour next year in support of their current album Paper Gods. The legendary band, CHIC, led by guitarist Nile Rodgers, will appear as special guests on almost all of
the dates with an additional support act to be announced. Rodgers served as a producer on Paper Gods and has enjoyed a long collaborative history with Duran Duran.

The Paper Gods Tour will kick-off on March 28, 2016 in Durham, NC and will be divided into two legs. The first runs through April with shows up and down the East coast of America into Canada, including Washington, D.C., Brooklyn, NY, Atlanta, Austin and Montreal. The second leg returns the band to the road stateside in July and continues through early August with shows in Las Vegas, Irvine, San Diego, Toronto and more.

Every ticket purchased online for Duran Duran’s 2016 headline tour will receive a standard physical copy of Paper Gods. Fans will receive an email 10-14 days after purchase containing redemption instructions. Festival dates are not included.

Members of the Duran Duran Fan Community will have access to pre-sale tickets and exclusive VIP packages beginning Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 10 a.m. local venue time through www.duranduranmusic.com. Citi card members will have access to pre-sale tickets beginning Thursday, Dec. 10 at 10 a.m. local time through Citi’s Private Pass Program. For complete pre-sale details, visit www.citiprivatepass.com. Fans with the Live Nation mobile app will have access to a password-free presale starting Friday, Dec. 11 at 10 a.m. at Ticketmaster-ticketed venues. The app is available via the App Store and Google Play. Tickets for the general public go on sale starting Dec. 12 at 10 a.m.

Duran Duran’s four original members: singer Simon Le Bon, keyboardist Nick Rhodes, bassist John Taylor, and drummer Roger Taylor, performed a few special West coast shows with CHIC around the release of Paper Gods in October before embarking on a UK arena tour that wraps up on Dec. 12.

In its review of the band’s recent Leeds show, The Guardian raved that “everything that is wonderful about pop music seems to occupy the triumphant final half hour, as a sea of blondes, brunettes and husbands come together to bellow ‘Planet Earth,’ ‘Girls on Film,’ ‘Rio,’ and the rest. Every arm is raised skyward in a giant communal bonding, an audiovisual illustration of Le Bon’s insistence that ‘music is a healing force.’”

Paper Gods was released worldwide on September 11 and bowed at No. 10 on Billboard’s Top 200 Album chart, earning Duran Duran its highest-charting album in 22 years.

Pearl Jam’s Isolated Vocals, Bass and Guitars For “Jeremy”

Pearl Jam “Jeremy” was inspired by a newspaper article Vedder read about a high school student who shot himself in front of his English class on January 8, 1991. It reached the number five spot on both the Mainstream and Modern Rock Billboard charts. It did not originally chart on the regular Billboard Hot 100 singles chart since it was not released as a commercial single in the U.S. at the time, but a re-release in July 1995 brought it up to number 79.

Martin Atkins on what it means to be a rock star today

In this installment of The Martin Atkins Minute, the professor, producer and former Public Image Ltd. drummer wonders what it means to be a rock star in a world flipped on its head. It’s a world where Dunkin’ Donuts is selling chicken sandwiches, Burger King is peddling glazed donuts, friendship is measured by numbers on a Facebook page and the only thing you can count on is change.

Refreshment on the Job. Watch This 1951 Ad For Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola made this film to promote Coke use on the job. I actually don’t need an ad to tell me to drink more Coke on the job, as anyone who passes through my office can attest. So, yeah.

Read Thom Yorke’s Letter To Father Christmas, Asking For Peace, Snow, Hope

December 7 is National Letter Writing Day, and to mark the occasion, Letters Live – the performance event series celebrating the glory of literary correspondence – has announced a limited run at London’s Freemasons’ Hall from 10 to 15 March next year. They’ve also tasked a number of actors, musicians and writers to share their letters to Father Christmas.

Below, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke shares his note to Santa Claus. Yorke has simple requests: love, understanding, peace, and reading glasses

dear father christmas

it is years since i wrote to you.
i hope this letter finds you well and that the snow is still continuing to fall up in lapland.

here it is mostly rain. not even jumper weather yet!
but the christmas albums are already being played in the shops.
that must be so embarrassing for you.

i know this year you will be exceptionally busy for you.
we all expect a little too much of you now i think.
and there are so many imposters on television. even in the street.

since i wrote to you last when i was 9 i have tried to be good, but sometimes failed spectacularly.
i have also tried to do what i’m told but often have delighted in doing the exact opposite.
but always i have tried to give love and try not to cause hurt.

so
dear father christmas
what i’m saying is ..

now that i’m 47, if i have any last remaining credit with you, i have just these small requests.

that my kids have a beautiful christmas
with love and understanding and peace.
perhaps some heavy snow? that would be really great.
and can you just send the precious things that will really mean something to them?
and can you send them some hope for the future. that is very important.

i won’t ask you to solve the problems of the human race. those are our problems alone.

but perhaps this year you would consider not giving any presents to oil company executives and the politicians whose influence they buy?

and for me? just some reading glasses.. : / the blue ones.

yours completely sincerely

Thom

p.s. thanks for the zx81 computer when i was 11. that was really wicked.

George Clinton On The Funk Tradition Will Make You Wanna Get Up And Dance

Philosophically, what would you say is the funk tradition?

George Clinton: Funk is gonna always survive. It’s about doing the best you can, and if you do the best that you can do, you just leave it alone and let the funk take over. It usually leads you to where you need to go. Right now, I’m having pretty good luck working with Louie Vega, Kendrick Lamar, and now, Ice Cube. We did the single for the video “Ain’t That Funkin’ Kinda Hard On You,” which will be out in a couple of weeks. And the version with Kendrick and Ice Cube will be out soon. So, just do the best you can and funk leads you to where you’re supposed to go. And I think I’m in the right place right now between the new hip-hop, the old hip-hop, and the electronic dance music. Still doing the funk the way I’d like to.

(The idea of expanding one’s consciousness) That plays a role in everything making music in ‘67, 8, and 9. That became the reality even if you were playing classical. The trending chemical substance of the day was provoking all the thoughts in music. You had Frank Zappa, who was weird. But all of those mind-expansion drugs played with the territory you were allowed to think in. The Beatles covered so much ground in the stuff they sang and wrote about that, you know… that was the consciousness of the youth of that day. You learned a lot about the world.

Once your mind starts expanding, you start appreciating all types of music: Classical, jazz, classical rock.

Elton John on the continued allure of drug use in music

In almost every scene, in almost every city, becoming a musician or working in the music industry still seems to come part and parcel with heavy drug use. It’s a cliche – yet one that continues to ring true in 2015. What is the continued allure of cocaine, for people starting out in bands?

Elton John: “Well there’s certain people I’ve known, young musicians who are beginning to make it and they’ve disappeared into the bathroom come and I’ve gone, ‘Are you doing coke?’ and they’re going, ‘Yeah!’ I said, ‘Well that’s not a very good idea’ and they say, ‘Well it’s what I’m supposed to do, isn’t it?’ No, you’re not supposed to do it, it’s a fucking horrible drug. It brings out the worst side of your soul, you don’t need it, you’ve got so much talent. Stop it. It’s alright to have a drink but as soon as you go down that path it’s a path to…eugh.” He trails off for a moment.

“It’s crazy but it’s a cliché and a fucking horror story! You’re supposed to be making music. Just because Amy Winehouse died at 27 and Jim Morrison died at 27 and Jimi Hendrix died at 27 it doesn’t mean you have to as well. It’s bullshit and it’s so sad when you see that happen to someone. When you’re a drug addict and an alcoholic, you’re a completely lying, devious rat. It makes you so deceitful. It’s all about deceit, lies. ‘No I didn’t do that, no I didn’t do a line of coke, no I didn’t do this, I’m quite healthy, I’m very good, I’ve been out for a walk’. Bullshit. When you’re an addict, it’s all about bullshit.”

Chicago’s “Music vs. Gun Violence” wants to prevent gun violence through positive music

If music can motivate people to pick up a gun, can it inspire them to put the guns down?

With this simple question, Music Vs. Gun Violence was born—a social movement spearheaded by Chicago Ideas, Leo Burnett Chicago and Grammy-nominated Anthony “The Twilite Tone” Khan that aims to prevent gun violence through music.

The campaign features “Put The Guns Down,” an interactive music video that includes a string of performances from some of Chicago’s best-known hip-hop and rap artists such as Oscar and Grammy award–winner Common, Lil Herb and King Louie and allows you to download the beat and upload your own anti-gun violence lyrics. With each new submission, the video and support for the initiative grows.
