Slaight Music Announces “IT’S YOUR SHOT” – Canada’s Songwriting And Artist Development Competition Beginning August 1st

Slaight Music – champion and prime supporter of the Canadian music industry – announced the August 1st kickoff of “It’s Your Shot 2015”, Canada’s premiere songwriting and artist development competition. The contest, which is open to all musical genres, encourages artists to submit a song and/or video to www.itsyourshot.ca for a chance to win a Grand Prize valued at $50,000.

The “It’s Your Shot 2015” competition is one of the many initiatives put forth by Slaight Music—a company focused on discovering, developing, inspiring and supporting Canadian recording artists.

Each year, Slaight Music partners with one of Canada’s record labels to support this initiative.  The winning artist this year will receive distribution, radio promotion, publicity, and marketing support via MapleMusic Recordings, along with a professional photo session, a professionally written biography, the development of an artist website, social network pages and an opportunity to perform at a high-profile musical event in 2015.

Ali Slaight, Slaight Music Talent Development Coordinator comments, “It’s Your Shot is something I look forward to every year, and being the curator of the Top 25 gives me the opportunity to go through all of the submissions on my own; discovering so many talented and gifted artists during this process over the last few years is what truly excites me. Winning this competition is a giant step towards a successful musical career for any emerging artist and we can’t wait to hear what the entrants to ‘It’s Your Shot 2015’ bring this year!”

Tony Tarleton, GM of MapleMusic Recordings/Fontana North adds, “Both myself and the team at MMR/Fontana are really excited to be a part of the It’s Your Shot competition again.  We look forward to working closely with Ali and the Slaight Music team to help deliver yet another great artist to the marketplace. This is such a well-run competition in every aspect and we can’t wait to see and hear what’s to come!”

Past winners of the “It’s Your Shot” competition include: Liz Coyles (2011) who had a Top 20 hit with her debut single “Butterflies”; 2012 winner, Hamilton’s Thought Beneath Film, Jillea (2013), from Saint John, NB, whose debut single and EP are due for release via Universal Music Canada this year and 2014’s winner Sam Drysdale. “The team at Slaight Music is exactly what every artist hopes for early in their career,” says Drysdale.  “A group of people genuinely looking to foster and assist up and coming talent.  Forget the numbers and the dollar signs, being a part of the Slaight Music family is the real prize; and taking the chance to enter their It’s Your Shot competition has been the most important career move I’ve ever made.”

The competition will run from August 1st to October 31st with the winning submission announced mid-December.

Chilly Gonzales launches new masterclasses, takes over CBC Music

Chilly Gonzales takes over CBC Music beginning today. Teaming up with Canada’s national broadcaster, the Grammy award-winning musician and composer launches the first of three brand new video masterclasses. This time, the popular series takes a Canadian turn “In the Key of Eh.” The first video looks at moving musical motifs in Leonard Cohen’s “Hey That’s No Way To Say Goodbye” alongside Drake’s “Marvin’s Room” and Feist’s “My Room, My Man” all while referencing Shania Twain, Bach and more. The second in the series (landing August 5th) tackles home and away keys using Bryan Adams’ “Summer of 69” as a centre point and reaching as far as homegrown rapper Maestro Fresh Wes’ “Let Your Backbone Slide”. Finally, in the third video of the Canadian masterclass series (landing August 10th) Chilly Gonzales takes a look at the falling fifth of “O Canada” musing and comparing the Canadian Anthem with the American national anthem as well as nodding to tunes by Gowan and Mitsou. He gives the last word to Joni Mitchell. Watch the first of the new masterclass series here: http://goo.gl/nNdfmX

Chilly Gonzales’ CBC Music Takeover also includes an interview conversation between Feist and Chilly Gonzales. The longtime collaborators went on the record on a recent Saturday night in Toronto following his Pan Am Games Opening Ceremony performance. Feist and Chilly Gonzales discuss everything from bathrobes to Calgary to composing for strings. Read the conversation here: http://goo.gl/Iu33sX

The takeover continues with a journey into the musical influences of Chilly Gonzales via a YouTube playlist which includes everything from A$AP Rocky to Beethoven via Gershwin and Glenn Gould. An Instagram takeover of @cbc_music reveals scenes from as far back as the early 2000’s showing how Chilly Gonzales prepared and became the virtuostic pianist and entertainer selling out European philharmonic halls.

Currently finishing up four months of sold out shows in North America and Europe in support of Chambers, Chilly Gonzales & Kaiser Quartett recently announced their first show at Massey Hall in Toronto on Friday, February 5, 2016 and at Salle Wilfred Pelletier at Place des Arts in Montreal on Monday, February 8, 2016.

Since the release of Solo Piano II, Chilly Gonzales composed the best-selling book of easy piano pieces Re-Introduction Etudes, produced and released Octave Minds, the piano-meets-electronica album with Boys Noize and, most importantly, devoted himself to finding a modern take on chamber music.

Known equally for his intimate piano touch as for his showmanship, “Gonzo” aims to be a man of his time, approaching the piano with classical and jazz training but with the attitude of a rapper.

Chilly Gonzales holds the Guinness world record for the longest solo concert at over 27 hours. He performs and writes songs with Jarvis Cocker, Feist and Drake, among others. In 2014 he won a Grammy for his collaboration on Daft Punk’s Best Album of the Year. With “Never Stop”, Chilly Gonzales composed a global hit for the inaugural Apple iPad campaign.

Joe Jackson Goes “Fast Forward” With New Album & Tour

he ever-restless songwriter Joe Jackson traveled the world to record ‘Fast Forward,’ his first collection of original songs in seven years, that’s set for October 2, 2015 release on Work Joe-JacksonSong/Caroline. Originally conceived to be released as a series of EPs, the album was produced and arranged by Jackson, and features four sets of four songs recorded in four different cities – New York City, New Orleans, Berlin and Amsterdam; each with a different set of first-call supporting musicians. The results rank among the richest and most rewarding music of his storied career.

NEW YORK Jackson has called New York home for many years. He recorded these tracks with Bill Frisell on guitar, Brian Blade on drums, his longtime bassist Graham Maby, and jazz violin star Regina Carter. Along with three originals including the album’s title track, these sessions feature a scorching take on a New York classic, Television’s “See No Evil.”

AMSTERDAM Distinguished by the most diverse instrumentation of the four sessions, Jackson is joined on these songs by frequent collaborators Stefan Kruger and Stefan Schmid from the band Zuco 103, the Concertgebouw orchestra, and the project’s only guest vocalist, 14-year-old Mitchell Sink (from Broadway’s ‘Matilda).

BERLIN Berlin is Jackson’s second home, and he recorded here with two expatriate American musicians: acoustic bass master Greg Cohen (Tom Waits, Ornette Coleman, Bob Dylan) and Tindersticks drummer Earl Harvin. These sessions produced the album’s second cover, Jackson’s modern English take on the 1930s German ‘Kabarett’ song “Good Bye Jonny.”

NEW ORLEANS Jackson traveled to one of his favorite cities, New Orleans, to record with an all-local cast including three members of the funk band Galactic – drummer Stanton Moore, bassist Robert Mercurio, and guitarist Jeff Raines – and a horn section led by saxophonist Donald Harrison.

Jackson will launch an extensive North American tour timed to ‘Fast Forward,’ kicking off September 29, and including two nights at NYC’s Town Hall. Tickets go on-sale this Friday, July 17, at 10AM EST. See below for a full itinerary from MNN.

These career-spanning shows will feature Jackson “as my own opening act,” playing a short solo/piano set before bringing out a full band which will include Maby on bass, guitarist Teddy Kumpel (Rickie Lee Jones, Feist), and drummer Doug Yowell (Suzanne Vega, Ari Hest).

Joe Jackson’s last release, 2012’s ‘The Duke,’ was an ambitious, horn-free tribute to “fellow music pioneer” (NPR) Duke Ellington, which Rolling Stone hailed as “movingly subtle.”

Glen Campbell… I’ll Be Me arrives on DVD and VOD on September 1

Virgil Films announces the VOD and DVD release of Glen Campbell… I’ll Be Me, a new documentary film about the country/pop superstar produced and directed by filmmaker James Keach (Walk the Line). The film, which will aired on CNN on June 28th, became the most-watched CNN Films broadcast in the franchise’s history with over 2.76 million viewers on the night of its premiere. Glen Campbell… I’ll Be Me will be available on digital platforms (EST) on August 18th followed by a DVD and VOD release on September 1st.

Glen Campbell… I’ll Be Me was directed by James Keach (producer of Walk the Line) and produced by Trevor Albert (producer of Groundhog Day) and Keach. Keach and Albert also collaborated on the award winning film, Waiting for Forever.

“The making of this film has been an exhilarating, joyous and inspiring ride. I attribute that entirely to the heroic spirit of Glen Campbell and his extraordinary family,” said producer Trevor Albert.

In 2011, music legend Glen Campbell set out on an unprecedented tour across America. They thought it would last 5 weeks, instead it went for 151 spectacular sold out shows over a triumphant year and a half across America.

What made this tour extraordinary was that Glen had recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. He was told to hang up his guitar and prepare for the inevitable. Instead, Glen and his wife went public with his diagnosis and announced that he and his family would set out on a “Goodbye Tour.”

The film documents this amazing journey as he and his family attempt to navigate the wildly unpredictable nature of Glen’s progressing disease using love, laughter and music as their medicine of choice. Special appearances include Bruce Springsteen, The Edge, Paul McCartney, Blake Shelton, Sheryl Crow, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Taylor Swift, Steve Martin, Chad Smith and Bill Clinton among many others.

“We are honored to bring this portrait of Glen Campbell to American audiences,” said said Joe Amodei of Virgil Films. “This great entertainer and his indelible music have been a part of so many lives for decades, we look forward to reminding everyone of what’s so special about him.”

Keach added “the legacy Glen Campbell and his incredibly courageous family share in this film is one of the most important movies I have been blessed to have worked on. Glen Campbell…I’ll Be Me will forever inspire me as a filmmaker and a man. Glen is a real life hero on and off the stage.”

SoundCloud Confirms That It Will Have Subscription Service Later This Year

Last month, leaked documents revealed that the music distribution platform SoundCloud has plans to join Apple Music, Tidal, Spotify and the others to feature its own multitiered subscription service. SoundCloud co-founder and CTO Eric Wahlforss has officially confirmed these rumors, revealing that the platform will launch its subscription service later this year.

While Wahlforss refused to give up any details of the subscription service, according to the leak, the first tier would provide an ad-free experience for subscribers, with the ability to listen to audio and download a limited amount of music. The second tier, dubbed “SoundCloud Full Catalog Subscription Service,” would then give subscribers the ability to have unlimited access to its music.

SoundCloud has more than 100 million tracks, and is especially popular among the electronic dance music genre since many DJs are known to release mixes on this platform. In comparison, Spotify has just over 30 million songs, and Tidal has 30 million songs and 75,000 high-quality videos.

That Time Billy Corgan Interviews Nick Cave For MTV

The Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan has become a really smart guy to have on your talk show, especially when the topic is music streaming and the industry. His wit, electricity and using his voice makes a must-watch. But back in 1994, he sat down with Nick Cave for his own interview, and it’s…um….strange. I get the sense that these two would be yakking away off camera, though. Trust me on this, ALL of us who talk on TV or the radio stunk for a long, long time, so much respect to Billy for not walking out.
