Ben Folds Announces September Release for “So There”

Ben Folds has announced the release of his landmark new album, So There. Arriving in stores on September 11, the album is the multi-platinum selling singer/songwriter/producer’s first for his new label New West Records, and showcases eight new pop songs recorded and arranged in collaboration with yMusic — a critically acclaimed NYC-based sextet — along with the debut recording of Folds’ 21-minute “Concerto For Piano and Orchestra,” with the Nashville Symphony conducted by Giancarlo Guerrero. Recorded in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and his own historic Grand Victor Sound (aka RCA Studio A) in Nashville, the album is marked by its forward-thinking studio craft and creative spontaneity. NPR recently unveiled Folds’ “Capable of Anything”, listen below.

Bob Boilen at NPR said: “Ben Folds’ music has taken another turn, firmly embracing strings and chamber music yet still maintaining a passion for his love of pop… I find this to be the most lovable piece of music I’ve ever heard from Ben Folds.” “I don’t recall ever being quite so excited about an album I’m making,” Folds said. “I’ll let you decide if that’s a good thing or not. It’s just that we don’t often get to make a record that we’ve never heard before. The arrangements you will hear on this record are straight up rock – not ornamentation. The odd instrumentation – piano, cello, viola, violin, flute/piccolo/alto flute, trumpet/French horn, and clarinet/bass clarinet, with no bass and more often than not, no drums – is yielding something that I can’t wait to release. It’s a pop record, if that’s what you call what I write.”

The three-movement Concerto, which premiered in March of 2014, was initially conceived as the result of a commission from the Nashville Ballet along with the Nashville Symphony and Minnesota Orchestra, to create original music for a brand new ballet. While Folds has spent many years performing in regional symphony halls, challenging the perceptions and traditional constraints in the classical world, the creation of the concerto still presented a new challenge for him. What he ended up creating is a playfully modern, nuanced and beautifully dynamic work of art. After having spent much of 2014 performing the Concerto with some of the world’s greatest symphony orchestras around the globe, Folds was eager to continue exploring new sonic landscapes, but with the feeling and flexibility of playing with a “band.” Meeting and recording with yMusic became the bridge between the classically themed Concerto and the modern chamber rock songs on So There. Folds and yMusic have been touring to adoring crowds all spring, and are about to appear at Bonnaroo on June 12, and The Greek in Los Angeles, CA on June 27. More touring is currently being planned for the fall and 2016. F] Ben Folds first found international success as the leader of the Ben Folds Five. His subsequent solo career has seen the release of multiple studio albums, a pair documenting his renowned live performances, a remix collection, music for film and TV, an all a capella record, as well as numerous collaborations with artists spanning Sara Bareilles to William Shatner. A Nashville resident, Folds owns and operates Grand Victor Sound. The studio, formerly known as RCA Studio A, is the multi-platinum artist’s creative hub, where he composes, collaborates, produces and records his genre-defying work, as well as that of other artists. Folds has earned universal respect and praise for his insight as judge on five highly rated seasons of NBC’s a capella competition series, The Sing Off. In addition, he has made cameo appearances in a variety of film and TV projects, including a role on NBC’s Community.

Ever Wanted To Know Why Pop-tarts Without Frosting Have More Calories Than Those With Frosting? Here You Go

Here’s something I’ve never, ever thought about before, but once I heard about this, always wondered in the back of my mind, since I already know how Caramilk gets the caramel in the chocolate bar. At 210 calories, an unfrosted strawberry Pop-Tart had 10 more calories per serving than its frosted counterpart.

The question has gone viral online, with a few blogs looking to capture an answer. After contacting Kellogg’s, Quartz finally has solved the mystery of the unfrosted Pop-Tarts.

“Unfrosted Pop-Tarts have a slightly thicker crust to compensate for the lack of frosting, resulting in a few more calories per serving,” a Kellogg’s representative told Quartz in an email. It compensates for its sad lack of frosting in several ways, the representative said: “the overall composition of the food, including weight, breakability, toastabilty.”

Hear Sly Stone doing his radio show on San Francisco’s KSOL in 1967

In the mid-1960s, Stone worked as a disc jockey for San Francisco, California soul radio station KSOL, where he included white performers such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones into his playlists. During the same period, he worked as a staff record producer for Autumn Records, producing for San Francisco-area bands such as The Beau Brummels, The Mojo Men, Bobby Freeman, and Grace Slick’s first band, the Great Society. Stone was influential in guiding KSOL-AM into soul music and started calling the station K-SOUL. The second was a popular soul music station (sans the K-SOUL moniker), at 107.7 FM (now known as KSAN).

So, he knew what was goin’ on. Below, you can hear nearly an hour of Stone broadcasting on KSOL in 1967. It’s an MP3 of a tape of an AM radio broadcast, so gather round the speakers, kid, and marvel to what free-form radio was truly all about.

Duran Duran Announce New Album “Paper Goods” Due September 18

Multi-platinum superstars Duran Duran will release their 14th studio album, Paper Gods. on September 18th through Warner Bros. Records. Singer Simon Le Bon, keyboardist Nick Rhodes, bassist John Taylor, and drummer Roger Taylor recorded the album in London with producers Nile Rodgers, Mark Ronson, Josh Blair, and Mr Hudson. The record features special guests Janelle Monáe (on the first single “Pressure Off”), former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante, Canadian Juno-Award winning singer Kiesza, British singer/songwriter Mr Hudson, violinist Davidé Rossi and actress Lindsay Lohan. The album was mixed by Mark ‘Spike’ Stent. Paper Gods will be available for pre-order and “Pressure Off” will be available for purchase at all participating digital retailers and DuranDuran.com this week.

The songs on Paper Gods capture the duality and sense of conflict at the heart of Duran Duran’s music. “It really goes back to that strange early Duran mix: the hard-edged pop, coexisting with this dark, weird, experimental side,” John says. “That’s something that’s essential to all of us,” Nick adds. “It’s great to be able to lift people’s spirits – and your own – with a strong shot of pure pop, but the world we live in isn’t all just made of that stuff, so it seems natural to me that we have kept one foot in the darker, more Gothic side of life.”

Early sessions for Paper Gods began in 2013, with Mark Ronson and engineer Josh Blair once again joining the band in their south London recording studio, as they had for 2011’s All You Need is Now, which was produced by Ronson. When Ronson was called away to begin working on his own album, Duran Duran and Blair hooked up with the Kanye West/Jay-Z collaborator Ben “Mr” Hudson, and the sessions caught fire. In the summer of 2014, Ronson returned once more to the project, adding long-time Duran collaborator, Nile Rodgers to the mix for two of the album’s standout tracks. The remaining songs were co-produced by Josh Blair and the band.

“We found a whole new level of inspiration on this album,” says Rhodes. “We’ve allowed ourselves the time to make music that we can be proud of,” adds Le Bon. “I judge what we release by my favourite albums – Horses, Harvest, Let It Bleed, Blue, Transformer, Aladdin Sane. Those are classic albums. The only rule is it’s got to be music you can live with for the rest of your life.”

CHIC co-founder Nile Rodgers and Mark Ronson co-wrote, and produced the tracks “Pressure Off” and “Only in Dreams.” Rodgers also features on the first single from what will be the band’s 14th studio release. The former harks back to the taut funk of Duran Duran’s 1986 album Notorious, which was also co-produced by Rodgers. “Notorious was a strong touchstone for the band,” says Roger Taylor. All You Need is Now definitely reflected our earlier albums, but our starting point here was Notorious. We’re fortunate to be able to be inspired by our own back catalogue – not many bands can say that.”

In a collaboration overseen by China Chow, the band worked closely with Los Angeles-based artist Alex Israel, who created the album’s cover art. It features a collage of images that reference the visual history of Duran Duran, each placed like a sticker on a reproduction of Israel’s “Sky Backdrop” painting. The logo and graphic design are by Brian Roettinger.

Vanessa Carlton releases EP Blue Pool July 24 + reveals New Track on NYLON

Vanessa Carlton (one of my personal faves and extremely fun person on Twitter) announces the release of her upcoming EP titled Blue Pool available July 24 via Dine Alone Records. The EP gives fans a first look at her upcoming full length album Liberman out this October. NYLON premiered the title track today along with the artwork and track listing HERE.

“This whole album is paired down and minimalist and this song is an example of how you can turn a traditional piano vocal song into something else,” says Vanessa. “Also I’m a big Philip Glass fan and I love how Steve Osborne (Liberman producer & mixer) was able to turn my swirly piano part at the end into this slippery sounding kaleidoscope.”

The EP features songs “Take It Easy” and “Blue Pool” which will be found on the upcoming album as well as live living room sessions of “Operator” and “Nothing Where Something Used To Be.” A complete catalog of the Living Room Sessions will be available on a deluxe version of the album in October.
These tracks reflect Vanessa’s current state of mind since moving from NYC to Nashville, marrying husband John McCauley (Deer Tick) and having a baby girl. The simple instrumentation mixed with her wistful vocals and poignant lyrics bring you into her world and showcase a new side to this accomplished songwriter.

Carlton also recently signed with Dine Alone Records joining the independent label’s roster of like-minded artists. She introduced her evolved sound to fans with the track “Young Heart” which marked the first new music release for Carlton on her new label, which you can watch HERE.

More details will be announced as they become available. For more information on tour dates, please visit vanessacarlton.com

Randy Bachman, MAGIC!, Dallas Green to be Honoured at 2015 SOCAN Awards

A Winnipeg-born songwriter who became a worldwide legend of rock; a music creator from Oshawa, Ontario, who was born to make one of the most famous songs in history; a post-punk native of St. Catharines, Ontario, who has fronted two of the biggest acts of the last decade; a quartet responsible for one of the world’s biggest songs from the last year; an icon of the Canadian music industry who has guided the careers of some of Canada’s greatest musicians.

On the night of June 22nd at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel in Toronto, Canadian songwriting legend Randy Bachman, “Born To Be Wild” creator Mars Bonfire, Alexisonfire and City and Colour front-man Dallas Green, “Rude” writers MAGIC!, the legendary Bernie Finkelstein and many other songwriters, composers and music publishers will be honoured at the 2015 SOCAN Awards.
