What’s in Prince’s secret vault? Rows and rows of music

Prince may not want to talk about the vault, but there’s a whole bunch of Purple people who do.

Susan Rogers, Prince’s former sound engineer, tells me the vault predates the superstar status Prince attained with the movie Purple Rain in 1984. “I started the vault!” she says. “I joined Prince in 1983 when he was preparing to do Purple Rain. I realised it would be smart for me to get his tapes together in one place. I was aware there were a lot of pieces missing. It became an obsession. I wanted us to have everything he’d ever recorded. I called up the studios he’d been using and said: ‘Have you got any Prince tapes’? This is his legacy. We need to protect these things. It’s an actual bank vault, with a thick door. It’s in the basement of Paisley Park. When I left in 87, it was nearly full. Row after row of everything we’d done. I can’t imagine what they’ve done since then.”

Marc Maron Gets Animated In Video Talking About Iggy Pop

Marc Maron describes some of his favorite musical guests from the WTF podcast. In this animated episode, he remembers the stunning interview with Iggy Pop. Actually, most interviews with Iggy are chaos. If this doesn’t make you love both men, nothing will.

Jerry Seinfeld Rants Against ‘Creepy PC’ Culture: They Don’t Even Know What ‘Racist’ Means

Jerry Seinfeld doesn’t play colleges and has no plans to do so in the near future because of how politically-correct kids are these days.

Following his much-talked about comments from last week about college students becoming too politically correct, Jerry Seinfeld elaborated his point during Late Night with Seth Meyers Tuesday night. When Seth Meyers noted that there are more people than ever now who will “let you know you went over the line” in comedy than ever before, Seinfeld agreed.

“And they keep moving the lines in, for no reason,” Seinfeld said, citing the uncomfortable feeling he now gets from his audience when he tells his joke about people who scroll through their phone like a “gay French king.”

“Are you kidding me?” he asked. “I could imagine a time where people say, ‘Well, that’s offensive to suggest that a gay person moves their hands in a flourishing motion and you now need to apologize.’ I mean, there’s a creepy PC thing out there that really bothers me.”

Emerson Drive Achieve A Record 20 Top 10 Singles In Canada

From the “I bet you didn’t know this” file – Emerson Drive have officially achieved their 20th Top 10 single with “Who We Are” at Canadian Country radio this week. The band now holds the record for the most Canadian Top 10’s in the modern music era. Who would have guessed them? I mean, they’re amazing guys, slightly superior over most country acts these days, and some of the finest lyrics on the radio, but…it would have taken me a few guesses to get to them. At least.

Emerson Drive’s extensive background in the country music landscape is undeniable. For well over a decade, the band has produced such hits as “I Should Be Sleeping,” “Moments,” “Fall Into Me” and their latest GOLD single – “She’s My Kind Of Crazy.” They have countless Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) award wins, including three for Group or Duo of the Year, and they’re one of the only Canadian country bands in history to hold nominations from the Academy of Country Music awards (ACMs), the Country Music Association awards (CMAs) and the Grammys in the U.S., solidifying them as one of the great bands of all time.

President of Invictus Entertainment Group, Jim Cressman says “Longevity isn’t ubiquitous in this industry. By evolving their sound and listening to their fans, these guys have stood the test of time and are more relevant than ever.”

Expect new music from Emerson Drive on June 16th when their new single “Till The Summer’s Gone” hits radio.

Upcoming Canadian dates:
June 27, Cider Fest – Winona, ON
June 28, CRIR Festival – Strathmore, AB
June 30, Abbotsford Centre – Abbotsford, BC
July 25, Spencerville Stampede – Spencerville, ON
July 30, Cedarcreek Winery – Kelowna, BC
August 14, Arnprior Fair – Arnprior, ON

J.D. Salinger’s Holden Caulfield was one of the first to employ the phrase LMAO in Catcher In The Rye

According to Mike Vuolo at Slate, J.D. Salinger was a bit ahead of his time when it came to social media. It looks like Holden Caulfield in Catcher In The Rye was one of the first to employ the phrase. In a scene describing a particular war movie Holden hates, Salinger writes:
It ends up with everybody at this long dinner table laughing their asses off because the great Dane comes in with a bunch of puppies. Everybody thought it was a male, I suppose, or some goddam thing. All I can say is, don’t see it if you don’t want to puke all over yourself.

You can now download Jim Rockford’s Answering Machine Messages

The Rockford Files is an American television drama series starring James Garner that aired on the NBC network between September 13, 1974, and January 10, 1980, and has remained in syndication to the present day. Garner portrays Los Angeles-based private investigator Jim Rockford with Noah Beery, Jr., in the supporting role of his father, a retired truck driver nicknamed “Rocky”. In 2002, The Rockford Files was ranked #39 on TV Guide’s 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time.

Each episode began with the image of Rockford’s answering machine, and the opening title sequence was accompanied by someone leaving Rockford a message. The messages were unrelated to the episodes. They were a humorous device that invited the viewer to return to the quirky, down-on-his-luck world of Jim Rockford. The messages usually had to do with creditors, deadbeat clients, or were just oddball vignettes. Though a distinctive and clever entry device, the messages became difficult for the writers to create. Suggestions from staffers and crew were welcome and often used.

Jim Rockford’s Answering Machine lists every message aired during the series six seasons.

Jim, It’s Norma at the market. It bounced. You want us to tear it up, send it back, or put it with the others?

This is the Department Of The Army. Our records show that you are the “Rockford, James” who failed to turn in his service automatic in May 1953. Contact us at once.

Alice, Phil’s Plumbing. We’re still jammed up on a job, so we won’t be able to make your place. Use the bathroom at the restaurant one more night.

And now, you can download all the messages for your own use!

Ed Sheeran Gives Great Speech on Stuttering: “Embrace Your Weirdness”

Ed Sheeran gave a speech worth checking out this week. He was being honored at the American Institute for Stuttering’s Freeing Voices Changing Lives Benefit Gala on Monday. The musician was commended at the New York City fundraiser for his openness about overcoming his stutter.

“I was a very, very weird child. I had a port-wine stain birthmark on my face that I got lasered off when I was very young; one day, they forgot to put the anesthetic on, and ever since then, I had a stutter. I also had very big, blue NHS glasses — NHS is the National Health Service, one day I hope you’ll have the same! And I lacked an eardrum on one side of my ear, so stuttering was actually the least of my problems!”

“But it was still quite a difficult thing. The thing I found most difficult was knowing what to say but not really being able to express it the right way,” he continued. Though speech therapy and homeopathy didn’t work, rap music became an effective remedy. “My Uncle Jim told my dad that Eminem was the next Bob Dylan — it’s pretty similar, it’s all just storytelling — so my dad bought me The Marshall Mathers LP when I was nine years old, not knowing what was on it. I learned every word of it, back to front, by the time I was ten. He raps very fast and melodically and percussively, and it helped me get rid of the stutter.”

“Stuttering is not a thing you have to be worried about at all. Even if you have quirks and weirdness, you shouldn’t be worried about that,” he told the younger attendees. “The people I went to school with that were the most normal and were the coolest when we grew up — I was telling Emily earlier that one of the cool kids from school now does my plumbing! That’s a fact!”

“I wanted to not necessarily to shed light on stuttering or make it a thing, but stress to kids in general to just be yourself, because there’s no one in the world that can be a better you than you,” he continued onstage at the The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers. “If you try to be the cool kid in class, you’ll end up very boring and doing plumbing for someone who apparently wasn’t that cool. Be yourself. Embrace your quirks. Being weird is a wonderful thing.… I have a f—ing football team now, that’s pretty cool!”

“Embrace your weirdness. From a stuttering point of view, don’t treat it as an issue. Work through it and get the treatment you want to get, but don’t ever see it as a plight on your life. Carry on pushing forward.”
