Willie Thrasher, Leela Gilday, Edmund Bull, and The Bearhead Sisters Added to National Music Centre’s Speak Up! Exhibition

The National Music Centre (NMC) is pleased to announce the opening of its updated Speak Up! exhibition on June 19 with a new round of Indigenous trailblazers. A few days later, on June 21, NMC will celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day with free admission to Studio Bell, featuring a special live event with Indigenous song, music, and dance.

The evolving Speak Up! exhibition, which is supported by TD Bank Group, will now feature Willie Thrasher, the celebrated Inuvialuit musician who has advocated for Inuit and First Nations issues throughout his career; Juno award-winning singer-songwriter Leela Gilday from the Dene Nation; traditional pow wow singer Edmund Bull of the world champion Cree group, Red Bull Singers; and Juno Award-winning traditional trio The Bearhead Sisters from the Paul First Nation in Alberta.

On June 21 at 1:00 pm, the live event will be hosted by David McLeod, curator of the National Music Centre’s Speak Up! exhibition, and feature performances by Willie Thrasher and his partner Linda Saddleback; Cree Métis songwriter, poet, and filmmaker Sandra Sutter; and Wyatt C. Louis, a nêhiyaw singer-songwriter who melds folk and soulful blues to tell tales of love, loss and the journey home.

“I’ve been going from reserve to reserve, city after city, performing for all these years and it’s fun to hear that I’ve been included in this new exhibition,” said Willie Thrasher. “Me and Linda are honoured to come out to Calgary and perform; we’re excited to meet our native brothers and sisters, light a spirit fire for our ancestors, and share what our elders and people have shown us for so many years. We’re really honoured by all of it.”

Since 2019, the Speak Up! exhibition has showcased an annual selection of Indigenous groundbreakers from across Canada who have left their mark on culture through music. Featuring storytelling, audio, and artifacts, visitors to Speak Up! can learn how Indigenous artists are using their voices to foster dialogue and understanding to radically shift the Canadian paradigm of who First Nation, Métis, and Inuit people are.

“This year’s featured Speak Up! artists have not only made significant contributions to music but have also played crucial roles in promoting Indigenous culture and heritage. They include some of the biggest names on North America’s powwow trail and contemporary songwriters who beautifully capture stories of their life, their people, and a deep connection to the land they call home,” said David McLeod (member of the Pine Creek First Nation), Curator of Speak Up! and NMC Board Member and Chair of NMC’s National Indigenous Programming Advisory Committee.

The Speak Up! exhibition is supported by TD who, in 2022, increased its support of NMC’s Indigenous programming through the OHSOTO’KINO initiative, so named after a Blackfoot phrase that means “to recognize a voice of.” OHSOTO’KINO is led by NMC’s Indigenous Programming Advisory Committee, who act as a guiding voice for exhibitions and programs at Studio Bell. The initiative focuses on multiple elements: creation of new music in NMC’s recording studios, artist development through a music incubator program, exhibitions via the annually updated Speak Up! gallery, and digital content on NMC’s Amplify platform at amplify.nmc.ca.

Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, will be open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on June 21, National Indigenous Peoples Day, and admission will be free for everyone. Learn more at studiobell.ca/whats-on. The current iteration of the Speak Up! exhibition will open on June 19 and run until June of 2025.

Live Nation’s All-In Pricing Policy Delivers Increased Ticketing Transparency For Fans And More Sales For Artists In Its First Six Months

Live Nation Entertainment’s all-in pricing policy, which shows a ticket buyer the total price and fees associated with their transaction, has yielded an 8% increase in completed sales in the first six months the program rolled out across all Live Nation venues and festivals in the U.S. The industry-leading initiative has proven beneficial for both fans and artists, delivering greater transparency for fans while increasing sales for artists and fewer abandoned carts at checkout.

The encouraging data comes at a critical time as policymakers in the House prepare to vote on the TICKET Act, which aims to ensure transparent pricing for consumers among other ticket reforms. Live Nation’s move to all-in pricing has seen broad success, with nearly 9,000 shows displaying all-in pricing as the program begins to scale. This benefits fans in the 33 states plus Washington, D.C., where Live Nation operates venues.

“Showing the total cost to walk in the door upfront is better for fans and artists. We’re proud to have led the industry in adapting this commonsense policy, and we encourage Congress to enact a nationwide law so every ticket buyer benefits from this transparency, no matter where they are buying their tickets,” said Michael Rapino, CEO of Live Nation Entertainment.

In addition to advocating for a nationwide all-in pricing mandate, Live Nation has actively supported the passage of all-in pricing laws in state legislatures across the country including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, Minnesota, New York and Tennessee. However, many resale platforms are still not compliant with these state-led transparency standards. The company advises consumers to be on the lookout for illegal drip pricing on other ticketing platforms and to report such cases to their state Attorney General’s office. Live Nation also supports other ticketing reforms that benefit consumers including banning speculative ticketing, allowing artists to cap resale markups, enhancing legislation against buying tickets with bots, and more.

Badflower Announce The ‘No Place Like Home 2024 Tour’

Today, Badflower announced the No Place Like Home Tour – 2024 across the U.S. Produced by Live Nation and FPC Live, the 29-date run kicks off on Tuesday, September 3 in Dallas, TX at the House of Blues, with stops in Houston, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, Boston, New York, Denver, Portland, Los Angeles, San Diego and more before wrapping up on Tuesday, October 22 at Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN. Special guests Missio will join on all dates and Slothrust will join on select shows.

Badflower isn’t afraid of making anybody uncomfortable. The Los Angeles-bred and Nashville-based quartet— Josh Katz (lead singer, guitarist), Joey Morrow (lead guitar, backing vocals), Alex Espiritu (bass), and Anthony Sonetti (drums)— siphon stress, sleeplessness, sex, sadness, mania, pain, and truth into revelatory alternative anthems. They continue to commit body, blood, mind, and soul to their art. After forming in LA in 2014, they dropped two EPs before sending shockwaves throughout the rock world with their 2019 full-length debut, Ok, I’m Sick, via Big Machine/John Varvatos Records. LoudWire listed it among the “50 Best Rock Albums of 2019,” while singles “The Jester,” “Heroin,” and “Ghost” all vaulted to No. 1 at rock radio. The latter also picked up a Platinum certification from the RIAA and was awarded “Rock Song of the Year” at the iHeartRadio Awards. Along the way, the group garnered further acclaim from Billboard, Nylon, Alternative Press, and performed on The Late Late Show with James Corden. The band is a rare breed of act who can ignite a crowd at Kaboo Del Mar or Sonic Temple, in addition to sharing bills with the likes of Incubus, Cage the Elephant, Ghost, Nothing More, Shinedown, Soundgarden, and many more. Thus far, they’ve also gathered over 200M streams and counting across platforms. Musically, Katz’s quivering confessions seep into climactic distortion and, like any good rush, you need more— consider it delivered with their latest album, This Is How The World Ends. Catch Badflower on tour this fall with Slothrust and Missio supporting on select US dates.

Chief Keef Announces “A Lil Tour,” His Headlining Summer 2024 Tour

Known for his shape-shifting sound and immense influence on rap music, Chief Keef draws a crowd wherever he goes. Today, the 28-year-old artist announces “A Lil Tour,” his upcoming nationwide headlining tour.

Produced by Live Nation, “A Lil Tour” criss-crosses the U.S. for 17 dates, starting in Boston on July 16th, passing through Brooklyn on July 24th (Brooklyn Paramount), Atlanta on July 29th (Coca-Cola Roxy), Los Angeles on August 10th (Hollywood Palladium), and more before ending in San Francisco on August 13th. 43B signee Lil Gnar and The Glo Boyz will join Sosa on tour as support for all dates.

Chief Keef’s tour announcement arrives shortly after the release of his new album, Almighty So 2. Crafted over a period of two years, Almighty So 2 is produced by Sosa himself, with occasional assistance of reliable collaborators like Akachi and Young Malcolm. The young auteur mostly eschews melody on the new album–instead, he resolves to showcase his prodigious abilities as an emcee, sharpening his pen and emptying out his arsenal of flows. Sosa throws his entire body into his vocal performances, whether he’s building in intensity until he reaches a thunderous crescendo, or delivering his smirking punchlines with an audible disrespect. The new album features appearances from Sexyy Red, Quavo, G Herbo, Tierra Whack, his 43B signee Lil Gnar, and his Glo Gang associate Ballout. Home to previously released singles “Racks Stuffed Inna Couch” and “Tony Montana Flow,” and new highlights like “Drifting Away” and “Runner,” Almighty So 2 is now available everywhere via 43B.

Almighty So 2 continues a banner year for the influential Chief Keef. In March, he connected with superproducer Mike WiLL Made-It for the collaborative mixtape, DIRTY NACHOS, a Trap-A-Holics-hosted throwback to the heyday of the mixtape era. Earlier in the year, Sosa collaborated with Sexyy Red on two singles from her Hood Hottest Princess (Deluxe)–”Ghetto Princess,” and “Bow Bow Bow (F My Baby Mama),” and teamed up with Lil Yachty for “Say Ya Grace,” a highlight from All Is Yellow, the first album by Lyrical Lemonade. The song’s Cole Bennett-directed video went viral: the song reached the top 5 of YouTube’s Trending chart, and racked up over 3 million views in its first week of release. In June, Chief Keef makes his long awaited return to Chicago on June 16th, performing his first show in his hometown since 2012 at Lyrical Lemonade’s Summer Smash.

Uncountably prolific, yet never seeming to run out of ideas, Chief Keef is embarking on a new chapter of his storied career. In 2022, ten years after he stormed into the game and changed it forever at only 16-years old, he announced the formation of 43B, his new record label formed in conjunction with BMG, and signed its first artist, Lil Gnar. The two 43B artists combined for the single “Almighty Gnar,” a beat-shifting banger, and reconnected in 2023 for the fiery “PB&J,” which also featured Young Nudy. In December 2021, the rapper shared his critically acclaimed project 4NEM, home to viral single “Yes Sir” and titanic opener “Bitch Where,” prominently used in the fourth season of FX’s Atlanta and recently included in Pitchfork’s Best Singles of 2022 list, and founded his new Web3 venture DigiGlo. With Almighty So 2 on the way and more milestones to achieve, Chief Keef plans to make 2024 his own. Stay tuned for much more.
