Sphere Entertainment Unveils “V-U2”: A Groundbreaking Immersive Concert Film Showcasing U2’s Historic Sphere Run

Sphere Entertainment Co. announced today a one-of-a-kind cinematic experience to be shown exclusively at Sphere.  V-U2 An Immersive Concert Film at Sphere Las Vegas, directed by Morleigh Steinberg and The Edge, showcases the history-making and future-defining U2:UV show directed by Willie Williams that played to over 700,000 fans from 100+ countries across 40 sold-out dates from September 2023 through March 2024. V-U2 is the first film ever to be shot entirely with Big Sky, the groundbreaking ultra-high-resolution camera system developed by Sphere Entertainment. V-U2 does not just capture U2’s epic run at Sphere, it allows audiences to feel like they are at the live shows.

V-U2 is a Sphere Experience, Sphere’s signature original content category.  To create this larger-than-life concert film, a number of Big Sky cameras captured the band at extraordinary scale, sharpness, and clarity. V-U2 employs Sphere’s immersive technologies including the 160,000 sq. ft. display plane, which at 16k x 16k resolution is the world’s highest-resolution LED screen;  Sphere Immersive Sound, powered by HOLOPLOT, which provides crystal-clear sound to every seat in Sphere; and haptic seats, which use vibrations so guests can ‘feel’ the experience. All of these technologies, which were used to great effect in ‘U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere,’ will be leveraged in this Sphere Experience in new and different ways to reinforce the feeling of ‘being there’.

Launching a venue like Sphere challenged the band to create a once-in-a-lifetime audio/visual concert experience and the same standards were upheld for the film.  Co-directors The Edge and Morleigh Steinberg spoke about the filmmaking process:

“The goal was to give the immersive movie goers as close to the live U2:UV concert experience as possible — and then some. I’ve never seen a U2 show. I’m so relieved I caught a great one,” said The Edge.

“We knew all the tremendous capabilities of the technology, but we didn’t know what to expect from the process of making this film.  The work became a true collaboration between band, artists, producers, and technology teams.  The end result is a cinematic experience that transports viewers into the energy and beauty of the live show,” said Morleigh Steinberg.

V-U2 is a first-of-its-kind immersive film that will transport audiences back to U2’s groundbreaking live Sphere shows and make them feel like they are there,” said Josephine Vaccarello, Executive Vice President, Live, MSG Entertainment, who oversees live bookings for Sphere. “This concert film was created specifically for Sphere, and will utilize the venue’s technologies to create an experience that is only possible at this next-generation entertainment medium.”

V-U2 immortalizes the acclaimed ‘U2:UV Achtung Baby Live At Sphere’ show directed by Willie Williams. The film of the show was directed by The Edge and Morleigh Steinberg and was produced by The Edge, Bono and Adam Clayton, along with producer Alan Moloney, in a unique collaboration with Sphere Entertainment. Stefaan “Smasher” Desmedt, video director of the original show, also served as Associate Director of the film. Music production was by Jacknife Lee and Joe O’Herlihy, the band’s longtime director of sound.  Sphere Studios’ Andrew Shulkind served as Director of Photography and the film was edited by the Studios’ Robert Rivers Malina. U2’s management is led by Irving and Jeffrey Azoff, both Executive Producers of the film. Jim Dolan is Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sphere Entertainment; Jennifer Koester serves as Sphere’s President and Chief Operating Officer; Carolyn Blackwood is Head of Sphere Studios; and Josephine Vaccarello is Executive Vice President, Live for MSG Entertainment’s Live division, and oversees live bookings for Sphere.

A global news event which saw the world’s biggest rock band open the world’s most state-of-the-art venue, ‘U2:UV Achtung Baby Live At Sphere’ quickly became a pop culture moment and a must-see for music lovers everywhere. The show’s stunning visuals and live music performance, combined with the venue’s immersive technology elements, including the world’s most advanced audio system, became an instant social media sensation as hundreds of thousands of fans shared their U2:UV experience across multiple platforms generating billions of impressions, making U2:UV a truly global phenomenon.  One of the band’s most ambitious creative projects to date, it saw them work once again with longtime creative collaborator and show director Willie Williams, artists including Es DevlinJohn Gerrard and Marco Brambillaand longtime partner and producer Brian Eno.

Acknowledged as the most innovative live act in the world, U2 have always – since their earliest days, including the industry-defining ZOO TV Tour which broke the mold in 1992 – consistently pushed the boundaries of live performance, with ground-breaking stage shows that embrace the latest in technology and innovation. ‘U2:UV Achtung Baby Live At Sphere’ saw the band blaze a trail yet again, with fans, press and industry leaders hailing the run, and the venue, as the future of live entertainment.

Known for his ability to seamlessly blend acoustic and electronic elements, his music resonates with authenticity and emotional depth. In March 2019, he garnered widespread acclaim for his Grammy-winning contributions to Billie Eilish’s breakthrough album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?. FINNEAS then stepped into the spotlight with his own debut, the Blood Harmony EP in 2019, followed by his debut full-length album, Optimist, in 2021. Their dynamic partnership has become a beacon for those seeking to innovate and express genuine emotion through their art.

“The most important thing to me about a guitar is versatility,” said FINNEAS. “I was first introduced to the Acoustasonic guitar in 2019 when I was on tour with Billie, and I played it at every show that year. When we started conversations about my signature model, I knew this guitar was great in a live setting, and I wanted to find ways to take it into the studio and make it a versatile, expressive studio instrument. This is the result of that. ”

In addition to the release of his first-ever signature guitar, FINNEAS has just released his latest single, “For Cryin’ Out Loud!”, now available on all major streaming platforms. This track is a precursor to his much-anticipated sophomore album, For Cryin’ Out Loud!, which is set to be released on October 4. New Order Announce ‘Brotherhood’ Deluxe Box Set And Season 2 Podcast

Today (4th September), New Order announce a new remastered set of formats for their album Brotherhood, to be released via Warner Music on 22nd November 2024, available in 2CD, 2DVD and 1LP. Also being made available are reissues of the respective 12” singles Bizarre Love Triangle, State Of The Nation and Touched By The Hand Of God with corresponding b-sides. Brotherhood is the fourth in the series of limited edition Definitive boxsets which includes Movement (2019), Power, Corruption and Lies (2020) and Low-Life (2023).

Written, recorded and produced by New Order, Brotherhood was originally released via Factory Records in September 1986 and peaked at #9 in the UK Albums Charts. This new collection for Brotherhood includes the album remastered on vinyl and CD and 2CD which features 9 unreleased tracks and demos from a recording session in Japan in 1985 and a 2DVD with live performances from Brixton Academy (1987), G-Mex Manchester (1986), Glastonbury and TV shows from UK and Europe, all previously unavailable on DVD.

Also announced today is Season 2 of Transmissions: The Definitive Story of Joy Division & New Order, featuring brand new and exclusive interviews with band members Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris, Gillian Gilbert and Peter Hook and special guest contributors including: Johnny Marr, Billy Corgan, Christine And The Queens, Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa, Keith Allen, Peter Saville, Andrew O’Hagan, Arthur Baker, Kevin Cummins, DJ Paulette, Megan Louise, The Chemical Brothers’ Tom Rowlands, Paul Morley, Jo Whiley, Kevin Saunderson, Tarquin Gotch, Will Sergeant, Virgil Abloh, Hot Chip’s; Alexis Taylor, Mike Pickering, Neil Tennant, Daniel Avery, Charlie Gunn… and Bez.

Narrated by BBC Radio’s Elizabeth Alker, Season 2 finds our unlikely heroes adjusting after the surprise global success of Blue Monday transforms New Order into stars; Quincy Jones is knocking down their door with offers of a US record deal, John Hughes is hunting them down for soundtrack work, New York’s hippest producers are lining up to get in the studio and huge US success beckons. But as New Order’s profile grows, so too do the demands and excesses and the band begin to realise just how far they’ve come, and to question how far the road might take them. This series documents arena tours, Ibizan insanity, a behind-the-scenes look at the chaotic peak of the Hacienda, the creation of three more classic albums Brotherhood (1986) Technique (1989) Republic (1993) and a certain timeless soccer World Cup anthem… World In Motion.

Speaking about New Order’s career to date, singer Bernard Sumner says, “if you do it the way everyone else does it, you might have more success. But it’ll be a short burn, whereas with the way New Order did it, it made us more interesting. But it wasn’t intentional though, we just did what we wanted to do and didn’t really listen to anyone”

On New Order’s 80s success in the US, drummer Stephen Morris, “America had never heard of Joy Division. In England and Europe at the time there was still this thing where you get people coming to see you, expecting you to play ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’. Whereas in America, they would approach you with an open mind, and the fact that the audiences did get bigger justified our bloody mindedness with not being Joy Division…”

Keyboardist Gillian Gilbert on experiencing the US music industry, “I don’t know what they thought of us. Rob [Gretton, manager] was always, ‘You shouldn’t single out one person as the main focus, even Ian. You’re all the same.’ We were all on the same level. So I don’t know what they made of us. They used to turn up in suits. That was the main thing you’d see. All really smart record guys in suits.”

Peter Hook on how their club The Hacienda anticipated the coming rave music scene. “Watching the Hacienda and watching Rob and Mike Pickering’s belief in Detroit and Chicago House in 1983, 84, all the way through nights that they put on with exactly the same DJs in 91, in 83! They believed in the music a long time before Ecstasy swept it along in its tidal wave.”

Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins: I was at a club. So I’m standing there and it’s a normal night. And for the first time, here comes the kick drum for Blue Monday. As the kick drum hit, everybody in the club started running to the dance floor. Running. So it instantly went from like 30 people to 300 in seconds. And I’m like, ‘What is happening?’ I’m getting chills even just thinking about the moment. And it was like, Oh my God, I’m hearing a song I will hear for the rest of my life. I saw my generation go, ‘This is the song.’

DJ Paulette: “New Order gave Manchester a place to socialise. A place to dream. Music to have babies by. Meet their friends by. Gigs to remember for the rest of their lives. Record collections to treasure. It’s like New Order have given people in Manchester everything, everything.”

Tom Rowlands, The Chemical Brothers, “I think the key to them is the strength of the individual voices in the band. And each individual voice being so recognisable on the record. It’s insane, really, they get it all to fit into these songs, every single person in that band has a voice that would carry a whole other band.”

New episodes will be released weekly via Apple Podcasts, Spotify, , YouTube, Amazon Music, Stitcher, and wherever you get your podcasts.

“There was some music recorded for Long After Dark that didn’t get on the record, that I thought would’ve made it a better album,” said Tom Petty. “I left off…four things that I liked quite a bit. And probably a few more written that never even got in the door.”

Looking back on their third and final album together, legendary rock music producer Jimmy Iovine reflects, “Long After Dark, we thought we had it. Sounded like Positively Fourth Street, sounded like one of those records, you know. By the way, I think it is!”

Despite it being a golden era of The Heartbreakers playing at the height of their powers, it is widely known as the band’s most misunderstood and underrated success. The album features an edgy collection of rock ballads and guitar anthems backed by the unmistakable sound of The Heartbreakers, including founding members Mike Campbell (lead guitar), Benmont Tench (keyboards), Stan Lynch (drums), plus the new addition of Howie Epstein on bass and backing vocals.

Long After Dark (Deluxe Edition) will feature the songs that were lost in the debate over the album’s original direction. Notable highlights include finding Petty’s version of “Never Be You”—which was a #1 country hit for Rosanne Cash—pop anomaly “Don’t Make Me Walk the Line,” and an up-tempo version of “Ways To Be Wicked,” which was previously covered by Lone Justice, recorded at Applewood Studios in Denver, Colorado.

Many of the additional tracks are taken from the French TV sessions, including acoustic gems, “Turning Point” and the Everly Brothers influenced “Keeping Me Alive.”

Long After Dark was a smash by the usual standards—Top 10 in Billboard, certified gold—and spawned three fan favorites, “You Got Lucky,” “Change of Heart” and “Straight Into Darkness.” Though it remains an unsung gem amongst its predecessors, Damn the Torpedoes and Hard Promises. “It’s a good little rock & roll record” but also “a tough record because I never knew if we were making the right decisions about songs,” Petty shared in Paul Zollo’s interview anthology, Conversations With Tom Petty.

Long After Dark (Deluxe Edition) features the newly remastered original album from the original analog master tapes, plus 12 rediscovered bonus tracks newly mixed by Petty’s longtime engineer Ryan Ulyate and boasts packaging designed by Grammy Award-winning designer Jeri Heiden, liner notes by legendary rock journalist and Tom Petty Radio host David Fricke, with commentary from Jimmy Iovine and Cameron Crowe and iconic archival photographs by Dennis Callahan, Neal Preston and Aaron Rapoport. The set will be released in a variety of configurations, highlighted by a limited edition TomPetty.com 2LP pressing on 180-gram red with black splatter color vinyl, housed in a numbered foil tip-on jacket with an exclusive lithograph; a 3-disc set featuring 2 CDs, and a Blu-ray audio disc with additional hi-res stereo and Dolby Atmos mixes of the album and bonus tracks, also mixed by Ulyate; a variety of additional vinyl options includes a 2LP on 180-gram black vinyl; a limited edition 1LP 180-gram turquoise color vinyl pressing (main album only) with double-sided lithograph of Blaze Brooks’ illustrations (available exclusively at indie record stores).

The album will also be available at all streaming, download and HD audio download partners.

My Next Read: “We All Shine On: John, Yoko, and Me” by Elliot Mintz

In 1972, Elliot Mintz installed a red light in his bedroom in Laurel Canyon. When it started flashing, it meant that either John Lennon or Yoko Ono—or sometimes both—were calling him. Which they did almost every day for nearly ten years, engaging Mintz in hours-long late-night phone conversations that all but consumed him for the better part of a decade.

In We All Shine On, Mintz—a former radio and television host in Los Angeles—recounts the story of how their unlikely friendship began and where it led him over the years, revealing the ups and downs of a wild, touching, heartbreaking, and sometimes shocking relationship. Mintz takes readers inside John and Yoko’s inner sanctums, including their expansive seventh-floor apartment in New York’s fabled Dakota building, where Mintz was something of a semipermanent fixture, ultimately becoming the Lennons’ closest and most trusted confidant. Mintz was with John and Yoko through creative highs, relationship and private challenges, fascinating interactions with the other former Beatles, and the happiest moment of their lives together, the birth of their son, Sean. He was also by Yoko’s side during the aftermath of John’s assassination on the doorstep of the Dakota—not merely a witness to it all, but a key figure in the drama of John and Yoko’s extraordinary lives.

We All Shine On is a must-read for Beatles and Lennon fans, offering an up close and intimate view of one of the most celebrated artists of the twentieth century, as well as one of the most fascinating marriages. But it’s also a relationship story that just about everyone can relate to, a tale about partnership, loyalty, and trust, and most of all, the lasting legacy of a true and deep friendship.
