Paul McCartney And Wings’ “One Hand Clapping” In Cinemas September 26

Trafalgar Releasing and Mercury Studios announced today an opportunity for audiences to step back in time to 1974 and witness the magic o– One Hand Clapping. A captivating documentary, filmed on video tape capturing the look and feel of the time, exploring their historic recording session at Abbey Road Studios, will premiere as an exclusive cinema event beginning September 26th. This behind-the-scenes look delves into the making of the acclaimed One Hand Clapping album, featuring rare footage, interviews with the band, insights from the creative team, and more. Relive iconic Wings hits, a reimagined Beatles classic, and captivating performances on the big screen.

“It’s so great to look back on that period and see the little live show we did. We made a pretty good noise actually! It was a great time for the band, we started to have success with Wings, which had been a long time coming.” Paul McCartney

In addition to the full documentary directed by David Litchfield, the event will feature the previously unreleased Backyard Sessions, showcasing Paul McCartney on acoustic guitar performing beloved tracks from his catalog. Highlights include the previously unreleased song “Blackpool” and covers of personal favorites like “Twenty Flight Rock,” the song he played for John Lennon during their first meeting. The screenings also boast an exclusive filmed introduction by Paul McCartney and previously unseen Polaroid photographs from the sessions.

Tickets for Paul McCartney and Wings – One Hand Clapping will be available beginning Friday, August 16 at onehandclapping.film.  Fans are encouraged to sign up for additional information.

“We are looking forward to bringing the legendary music of Paul McCartney to the big screen and offering fans a front-row seat to his enduring legacy,” said Marc Allenby, CEO, Trafalgar Releasing. “This cinematic experience will transport audiences back to a golden era of rock and roll while captivating new fans with the magic of this iconic band. It’s a must-see event for music lovers of all generations.”

“We are excited to be partnering with MPL on the global debut of Paul McCartney and Wings – One Hand Clapping” said Amy Freshwater, VP of Acquisitions who secured the film alongside Will White, SVP of Content Sales for Mercury Studios.  “We are working closely with MPL to release a brand-new project in honour of the 50th anniversary. Mercury Studios are handling all media sales and are delighted to pair with Trafalgar Releasing for the initial theatrical release as we bring this very special treat to audiences worldwide.”

One Hand Clapping showcased Wings’ new line-up, fresh off their return from Nashville where they recorded the classic single “Junior’s Farm”. Following the sudden departure of Denny Seiwell and Henry McCullough the previous year on the eve of recording the Wings masterpiece, released the year previously, Band on the Run, Paul (vocals, bass, piano, electric piano, Hammond organ, celeste, harmonium, acoustic guitar), Linda (Moog, electric piano, Mellotron, tambourine, backing vocals) and Denny Laine (vocals, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass) were now joined by guitarist Jimmy McCulloch and drummer Geoff Britton.  Additionally joining the band in the studio were orchestral arranger Del Newman and saxophonist Howie Casey, who had previously played with Paul in Hamburg and would go on to join the Wings touring band.

Opening with an instrumental jam that would become the One Hand Clapping theme song, the intimate film features live-in-studio renditions of Wings classics, including “Live and Let Die”, “Band on the Run”, “Jet” and “My Love”. During the film Paul talks about his enjoyment at working in a band, his writing process and how he thought at 14 he might have a future as a cabaret singer.  We hear from band members about their experience of being part of Wings and working with Paul.  Paul is seen performing side by side with Linda and there are even some impressive Karate displays by drummer Geoff Britton.

One Hand Clapping serves as a celebration of the enduring legacy of Paul McCartney and Wings. It captured a moment when Wings had found and defined their signature sound – just as Paul had shaped popular culture the decade before with The Beatles, he was doing it once again in the 70s with Wings.  This documentary gives an insight into the inner workings of the band as they work and play together in the studio.  Regarding the band in their recent album coverage, Pitchfork said “…the version of Wings that McCartney corralled for the One Hand Clapping sessions exhibited the laser focus and playful spontaneity of a tight knit rock’n’roll band that seemed to have put in their 10,000 hours in just a few weeks.”

The film, an intimate look at the recording, originally shot on 1970s videotape, has been scanned and restored at 4K. The between song dialogue has been de-mixed using Wingnut’s MAL software and the film features a new Dolby Atmos audio mix by Steve Orchard and Giles Martin.

Released in June, the album One Hand Clapping (order HERE) opens with an instrumental jam – the One Hand Clapping theme song. The album features live-in-studio renditions of Wings mega-hits “Live and Let Die,” “Band on the Run,” “Jet,” “My Love,” “Hi, Hi, Hi,” “Junior’s Farm,” Paul McCartney’s much loved solo song “Maybe I’m Amazed,” reworked extracts of Beatles’ classics “Let It Be,” “The Long and Winding Road,” and “Lady Madonna,” the Moody Blues’ hit “Go Now” with Denny Laine singing, and a Paul solo piano version of the Harry Akst/Benny  Davis Tin Pan Alley classic “Baby Face.”

Upon release, One Hand Clapping hit the Top 10 across Europe and has been critically praised. MOJO called it “Freewheeling and powerful” (4/5), while Uncut declared, “It’s a lovely record: McCartney is typically chipper, the song selection outstanding and the sound fabulous” (8/10). Record Collector added, “McCartney’s ineluctable creativity shines” (4/5), and Classic Pop Magazine enthused, “Macca unleashed deserves a round of applause” (4.5/5).

My Next Read: “The Meaning of Soul: Black Music and Resilience Since The 1960s” by Emily J. Lordi

In The Meaning of Soul, Emily J. Lordi proposes a new understanding of this famously elusive concept. In the 1960s, Lordi argues, soul came to signify a cultural belief in black resilience, which was enacted through musical practices—inventive cover versions, falsetto vocals, ad-libs, and false endings. Through these soul techniques, artists such as Aretha Franklin, Donny Hathaway, Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye, Isaac Hayes, and Minnie Riperton performed virtuosic survivorship and thus helped to galvanize black communities in an era of peril and promise. Their soul legacies were later reanimated by such stars as Prince, Solange Knowles, and Flying Lotus. Breaking with prior understandings of soul as a vague masculinist political formation tethered to the Black Power movement, Lordi offers a vision of soul that foregrounds the intricacies of musical craft, the complex personal and social meanings of the music, the dynamic movement of soul across time, and the leading role played by black women in this musical-intellectual tradition.

Finneas Returns With Brand New Single & Official Music Video “For Cryin’ Out Loud!”

Multiple GRAMMY® and Academy Award-winning artist, songwriter, and producer, FINNEAS returns today with a brand new single and album announcement; “For Cryin’ Out Loud!” Both the title for his single [OUT NOW] and forthcoming studio album, set for release via Interscope Records on October 4, FINNEAS’ self-produced second solo studio album was born out of a series of live studio sessions in Los Angeles, bringing together some of his closest friends and peers into one room.

In contrast to his debut album OPTIMIST which featured instrumentals written and performed solely by the artist himself, this time, For Cryin’ Out Loud! sees FINNEAS expand his creative horizons, steering things away from the bedroom producer mentality and to a classic studio/band environment, freeing FINNEAS and ultimately resulting in his most uplifting and raw body of work to date.

“For Cryin’ Out Loud!” the single comes with an official music video starring FINNEAS, and was written and directed by Isaac Ravishankara.

For Cryin’ Out Loud! follows the release of his sister Billie Eilish’s third studio album HIT ME HARD AND SOFT which has further cemented him as one of the most critically acclaimed, award-winning producers and songwriters of his generation. Earlier this year, FINNEAS took home his second Academy Award for “What Was I Made For” which he co-wrote and produced. He is also making his television scoring debut on the upcoming Apple TV+ limited series Disclaimer. The show is written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity, Children of Men) and stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline, Sacha Baron Cohen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Lesley Manville, Leila George, Louis Partridge and Hoyeon.

Multi-Academy® and GRAMMY® Award-winning singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer FINNEAS has quietly emerged as an unassumingly ubiquitous presence in popular music and culture. He introduced a heartfelt and hypnotic style on 2019’s debut Blood Harmony EP highlighted by the gold-certified “Let’s Fall in Love for the Night.” 2021 saw him unveil his full-length debut, The Optimist [Interscope Records]. It arrived to widespread acclaim. At the same time, he landed on the covers of publications such as V Man, L’Officiel Hommes USA, American Songwriter, Billboard, Mr. Porter and Mix Magazine and late-night television shows, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. He packed houses on headline tours and performed at festivals such as Coachella. His catalog grew to encompass popular collaborations with Ashe, Ringo Starr, and Lizzy McAlpine in addition to producing and/or co-writing tracks Justin Bieber, Halsey, Demi Lovato, Kid Cudi, girl in red, James Bay, Selena Gomez, Camila Cabello, and Tove Lo. He achieved stratospheric success for his work with his sister Billie Eilish, including ten GRAMMY® Awards, headline sets at Coachella and Glastonbury, two Academy® and Golden Globe® Awards both in the category of “Best Original Song” for “No Time To Die” from No Time To Die and “What Was I Made For?” for Barbie. He expanded his oeuvre as a sought-after composer, with a filmography boasting original scores for HBO Max’s award-winning The Fallout and BJ Novak’s Vengeance. In 2022, on behalf of the Disney PIXAR animated hit Turning Red, he wrote the music for the film’s boyband 4*Town. In 2023, he co-wrote and produced the critically acclaimed song “What Was I Made For?” for the Greta Gerwig-directed feature-length Barbie, which earned him his second Academy® Award for Best Original Song and won two GRAMMY® Awards (Best Song Written For Visual Media and Song Of The Year) as well as a Golden Globe Award (Best Original Song). FINNEAS has also scored the upcoming Apple Original series “Disclaimer,” a new psychological thriller from the multi-Academy Award-winning director, writer, producer, cinematographer and editor Alfonso Cuarón.

Royal Blood New 10th Anniversary Edition Of Their Self-Titled Debut Album To Be Released On August 16

Released in 2014, Royal Blood’s self-titled debut album changed everything for lifelong friends Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher. The duo had played in bands together for years, but armed with a record of instant classics, Royal Blood suddenly achieved a level of success that few debut UK rock bands have come close to achieving. The album fired straight to #1 and went on to be certified double-Platinum, earning the duo the BRIT Award for Best British Group as well as further awards from NME and Kerrang! It also started a run which has seen all four of their studio albums go straight to #1 in the UK – most recently with last year’s ‘Back To The Water Below’.

Now Royal Blood go back to their roots and celebrate where their story began with the release of ‘Royal Blood – 10th Anniversary Edition’ on August 16th. It will be accompanied by a new short documentary titled ‘Shouting Through The Letterhole’, which launches on YouTube at 7pm BST / 8pm CEST on August 15th.

Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher commented, “We can’t quite comprehend the fact that a decade has passed since the release of our debut album! The world, minds, and bodies we inhabit now feel somewhat unrecognisable to where it all began, yet the music on that record has remained a constant. It really did change our lives and we owe it everything.”

Ten years on and the electrifying energy of Royal Blood’s debut album remains as impactful as ever. Full of colossal riffs and battering ram rhythms matched by a flair for instantly memorable songwriting, the all-or-nothing performances of ‘Figure It Out’, ‘Come On Over’, ‘Out Of The Black’, ‘Little Monster’ and ‘Ten Tonne Skeleton’ are still viscerally frenetic, and all those tracks remain staples of their live show to this day.

The ‘10th Anniversary Edition’ comes complete with a wealth of bonus material. The package includes four b-sides from the era, including the deep cut fan favourites ‘One Trick Pony’ and ‘Hole’, plus the previously unreleased ‘Sleeptalker’ and Tom Dalgety’s original mix of ‘Ten Tonne Skeleton’, plus five live recordings from 2015, including three songs from their first main stage set at the Reading Festival.

‘Royal Blood – 10th Anniversary Edition’ is available to pre-order HERE. Formats include a gold double-vinyl which features the late Dan Hillier’s iconic ‘Pachamama’ artwork complete with a mirror-board finish and a gold background, it will also be released on CD and digital. Blood Records recently launched an additional album format, a striking limited edition zoetrope vinyl edition.

Royal Blood further reflect on their early days together with the documentary ‘Shouting Through The Letterhole’. The film takes us back to the start for Mike and Ben, with an array of rare and previously unseen footage encompassing interviews, behind-the-scenes content and performances from their ten years together. The YouTube afterparty will feature two previously unseen performances of ‘Out of the Black’ and ‘Figure It Out’, that were filmed at their triumphant homecoming Brighton Beach show in the summer of 2023.

2024 has seen Royal Blood power through a busy touring schedule, highlights have included two unforgettable 10th anniversary shows at the O2 Academy Brixton where they played their debut album in full, with one night featuring a surprise special guest performance from Shane Hawkins (son of the late Foo Fighters legend Taylor Hawkins) on ‘Little Monster’. They’ve also toured the States with Queens of The Stone Age and hit festivals everywhere from Hellfest to Shaky Knees to Lollapalooza India. The duo are now ending their summer festival schedule, with two of their biggest headline festival sets to date: Romania’s Summer Well Festival (August 10th) and then Belgium’s Pukkelpop (August 18th).

Joni Mitchell Archives, Vol. 4: The Asylum Years (1976-1980) Out October 4, 2024 On 6CD / Digital & 4LP Highlights Version

Throughout the latter half of the seventies, Joni Mitchell continued to creatively break ground with her fearless and fluid exploration of jazz. Rather than tread the same path, she challenged and reinvented her style with a folk fusion like no other. Ascending to an unrivaled sonic peak, this innovative sound took shape across the gold-certified Hejira [1976], the gold-certified double-LP Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter [1977], her collaboration with Charles Mingus entitled Mingus [1979], and live album Shadows and Light [1980]. Channeling the thrill and excitement of these records, she delves even further into this season on Joni Mitchell Archives, Vol. 4: The Asylum Years (1976-1980), releasing on October 4, 2024 via Rhino Records. Pre-orders are available HERE.

Listen to “Intro To Coyote / Coyote” The Forum, Montreal, QC, Canada, Dec. 4, 1975 Today HERE.

It stands out as the 12th release by the Joni Mitchell Archives and extends Rhino’s ongoing, GRAMMY-winning series exploring the vast untapped archives of rare Joni Mitchell recordings — a project guided intimately by Mitchell’s own vision and personal touch.

Joni Mitchell Archives, Vol. 4: The Asylum Years (1976-1980) arrives in multiple configurations. It will be available as either a 6CD / digital version or a 4LP version, Joni Mitchell Archives – Volume 4 Highlights: The Asylum Years (1976-1980). The 4LP set also specifically consists of Joni’s personal favorites from the 6CD version. Each version includes a book with never-before-seen photos and liner notes comprising a deep dive discussion between Mitchell and longtime friend Cameron Crowe. As part of their candid conversation, she shares intimate anecdotes, memories, and stories from that five-year creative run.

This comprehensive and essential set spans one of the most prolific periods of her storied career. It boasts powerful live tracks from her time in Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue during 1975 and 1976 Tour of the United States. It pulls back the curtain on the music by showcasing early recordings and alternate takes from the respective sessions for Hejira, Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter, and Mingus. It covers the Bread & Roses Festival as well as the Anti-Nuclear Rally. Finally, Vol. 4 chronicles her 1979 tour, even showcasing two tracks from that year’s Tour Rehearsals. Not to mention, it showcases her versatility and adaptability, housing collaborations with everyone from Herbie Hancock and Jaco Pastorious to Wayne Shorter and Pat Metheny.

Vol. 4 culls the previously-unissued material from original stereo reels, cassette tapes, CD-Rs, and even a radio broadcast. Newly mixed tracks came from multi-track tapes, while a handful of hi-res digital tracks have been sourced from the Bob Dylan Archives.

Last year, she shared Joni Mitchell Archives – Vol. 3: The Asylum Years (1972–1975). Garnering critical acclaim, Pitchfork dubbed it “excellent” in a positive “8.6-out-of-10.0” review, going on to note, “The box set—which also includes the exhilarating live album Miles of Aisles and the impressionistic The Hissing of Summer Lawns—covers a period of Mitchell’s career that already resists linear narrativizing.” In addition to features from Rolling Stone and more, Folk Alley raved, “Every track on this Joni Mitchell Archives, Vol. 3: The Asylum Years (1972-1975) reveals more and more of Mitchell’s magic ways with a song.” No Depression mused, “it is, in many ways, the most vital and interesting of the three collections so far,” and FLOOD attested, “this third volume is worth digging into as the best of Rhino’s Archives collections. I’m already excited for Vol. 4.”

It followed 2022’s Vol. 2: The Reprise Years (1968-1971). She began this journey with Vol. 1: The Early Years (1963-1967), earning a 2022 GRAMMY Award for Best Historical Album.

Last fall, Mitchell appeared at the Hollywood Bowl to perform three songs with Brandi Carlile. Earlier this year, she impressively made her debut on the GRAMMY Awards stage with a historic rendition of “Both Sides Now” alongside Carlile, Allison Russell, Lucius, Jacob Collier, Blake Mills, and SistaStrings. She also accepted a GRAMMY in the category of “Best Folk Album” for Joni Mitchell At Newport [Live] during the ceremony.

This October 19 and 20, Mitchell will be headlining her own ‘Joni Jam’ at the Hollywood Bowl featuring special ‘Joni Jam’ guests. Be on the lookout for more news and announcements from Joni Mitchell soon.

To herald the release, the GRAMMY® Award-winning, multi-platinum superstar entertainer shares a previously unreleased song entitled “Don’t Blame It On Me” today. Listen HERE. The track takes flight as a signature Bublé anthem. Handclaps, stand-up bass, and bright acoustic guitar set the tempo as he teases, “Don’t blame it on me for falling in love with you, anybody could see there was nothing I could do!” The momentum crescendos boosted by a boisterous horn section, big screen-ready strings, and an instantly chantable chorus. With its lovestruck spirit and uncontainable energy, it has all the makings of a future staple.

The Best Of Bublé notably boasts 21 essential tracks from across his catalog. It spans seminal smashes such as “Haven’t Met You Yet,” “Feeling Good,” “Sway,” “Everything,” and “It’s A Beautiful Day.” Among the unreleased material, it also includes a second new song “Quizas, Quizas, Quizas.”

In other big news, Bublé has joined the powerhouse coaching panel on The Voice, alongside Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani, and Reba McEntire. Season 26 premieres in September on NBC.

Last year, he impressively took home his fifth GRAMMY® Award. At the 2023 ceremony, his acclaimed LP, Higher, earned the trophy for “Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.” He has scored 12 total nominations to date.

With its procession of hits and new unreleased gems, The Best Of Bublé doubles as an expansive overview of Bublé’s musical journey so far, while hinting at much more to come…

Concert Safety Tips for Parents and Teens: Rock Out Responsibly

Whether you’re a seasoned concert-goer or preparing for your first live show, safety should always be your top priority, especially with the news of what happened with the Taylor Swift shows and alleged terrorist attacks. As a music enthusiast who’s been around the block (that means I’m old), I’ve seen it all— from the unforgettable moments of pure euphoria to the occasional hiccups that can turn a great night sour. So, let’s dive into some essential tips to ensure both parents and teenagers can enjoy their concert experiences to the fullest, without compromising on safety.

1. Plan Ahead and Communicate

Parents:

  • Know the Venue: Familiarize yourself with the venue’s layout. Knowing where the exits, restrooms, and medical stations are located can be a lifesaver.
  • Emergency Contacts: Ensure your teen has emergency contact numbers saved in their phone. It’s a good idea to have a meeting point in case you get separated.

Teens:

  • Stay Connected: Keep your phone charged and check in with your parents periodically. A quick text can go a long way in easing their worries.
  • Buddy System: Never attend a concert alone. Stick with friends, and look out for each other throughout the event.

2. Dress Smart and Comfortable

Parents:

  • Dress for the Occasion: Concerts can be crowded and hot, so dress in layers and wear comfortable shoes. Avoid bringing valuable items that can be easily lost or stolen.

Teens:

  • Rock the Right Gear: Wear something that makes you feel good but is also practical. Closed-toe shoes are a must to protect your feet from accidental stomps in the crowd.

3. Hydrate and Eat Well

Parents:

  • Pack Snacks and Water: Many venues have food and drink restrictions, so check ahead. However, if allowed, bring sealed water bottles and healthy snacks to keep everyone energized.

Teens:

  • Stay Hydrated: Dancing and singing along can be exhausting. Drink plenty of water, but avoid sugary and caffeinated beverages that can dehydrate you faster.

4. Respect Personal Space

Parents:

  • Set Boundaries: Discuss personal space and respecting others with your teens before the concert. It’s important to be mindful of the people around you.

Teens:

  • Be Aware: Enjoy the show, but don’t push or shove your way through the crowd. If you’re feeling uncomfortable or crowded, move to a less packed area.

5. Listen to Your Body

Parents:

  • Recognize the Signs: Keep an eye on your teen for signs of exhaustion or dehydration. If they seem overly tired or unwell, take a break.

Teens:

  • Know Your Limits: It’s okay to take a step back and rest if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Find a quiet spot to regroup and rehydrate.

6. Follow the Rules

Parents and Teens:

  • Obey Venue Policies: Every concert venue has its own set of rules regarding what you can and cannot bring. Familiarize yourself with these policies to avoid any last-minute surprises.

7. Trust Your Instincts

Parents:

  • Stay Vigilant: Keep an eye on your teen, but also trust their ability to handle themselves. Encourage open communication and trust your instincts if something feels off.

Teens:

  • Speak Up: If something doesn’t feel right, don’t hesitate to reach out to security or a staff member. Your safety is the most important thing.

8. Enjoy the Moment

Finally, remember that concerts are about enjoying the music and making memories. By taking a few simple precautions, both parents and teenagers can have a fun, unforgettable, and safe concert experience.

Rock on and stay safe out there!
