Bryce Dessner Signs Extensive Partnership With Sony Music Masterworks For Soundtracks

Sony Music Masterworks announces today a unique far-reaching partnership with versatile composer, sought-after musical collaborator and guitarist Bryce Dessner, who is also a founding member of Grammy Award-winning rock band The National. The newly inked partnership will see Dessner’s classical compositions released on Sony Classical, while sister label Milan Records will continue to be a home for some of his celebrated soundtracks. This innovative tailored approach will give Dessner maximum artistic freedom to pursue these two essential strands of his creative output.

Dessner will make his Sony Classical début on August 23, 2024 with Solos, a collection featuring a series of unaccompanied instrumental works written by the composer over the past few years. Selected from both his classical and soundtrack worlds, the works showcase not only Dessner’s compositional flair but also the immense talent of his acclaimed collaborators, many of whom work regularly with him and are his friends. Featured soloists include cellist Anastasia Kobekina; violinist Pekka Kuusisto; pianist Katia Labèque; harpist Lavinia Meijer; violist Nadia Sirota; percussionist Colin Currie; and Bryce Dessner himself on guitar. Accompanying today’s announcement and album pre-order is the first single from Solos – “Lullaby for Jacques et Brune” – a lullaby for piano, written by Bryce Dessner for his godchildren.

Says Dessner of these pieces: “Writing a solo piece for me is always a great challenge and joy, as you have all the personality and talent of the player plus the physicality and resonance of the solo instrument, a bit like a Shakespearean monologue. These solo pieces for violin, viola, cello, harp, percussion, guitar and piano represent many years of my compositional process. When I began composing, I mainly wrote solo pieces for myself to play and I have always loved unaccompanied instrumental music – including the solo Bach lute and cello suites and the Renaissance lute fantasies of John Dowland, which I used to play myself on the classical guitar. These pieces of mine are often written like poems, where the musical language itself dictates the form and evolution of the piece, and were often opportunities for me to explore more deeply my relationship to the instruments they were composed for. They also represent in each case close collaborative relationships and friendships I have been very lucky to develop with the incredible musicians who play them. Katia, Pekka, Anastasia, Nadia, Lavinia and Colin are all exceptional artists who brought so much of their amazing talent to these recordings.”

Dessner is a prolific classical composer, whose output has garnered him a Grammy Award and ranges from intimate chamber pieces and scaled-down works for solo instrumentalists to full orchestral scores and concertos.

In addition to his role as one of eight San Francisco Symphony Collaborative Partners, Bryce Dessner is currently Creative Chair of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, and Artist-in-Residence at London’s Southbank Centre and with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. Major new works include a Piano Concerto premièred by Alice Sara Ott and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich in January 2024 and now being performed internationally; a Concerto for Two Pianos premièred by Katia & Marielle Labèque and the London Philharmonic Orchestra; and a Violin Concerto premièred and performed internationally by Pekka Kuusisto. Dessner’s in-demand compositions have been performed by leading orchestras around the world, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, The Cleveland Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Philharmonia Orchestra of London and San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.

He has co-founded several new-music festivals, including the Cincinnati-based MusicNOW Festival in 2006, Copenhagen’s Haven Festival and the Cork-based Sounds from a Safe Harbour.

Bryce Dessner’s musical career has been rich and eclectic. Born into a musical family based in Cincinnati, he started out learning the flute as a child before switching to classical guitar in his teenage years, graduating from Yale University with a Masters in Music before finding fame as a founder member, guitarist, arranger and writer for alternative rock band The National.

Alongside his classical compositions, Dessner is also much sought after as a film composer, with recent and upcoming releases including the film Sing Sing starring Colman Domingo (due for release by A24 in summer 2024), limited series Manhunt (released in March 2024 on Apple TV), and John Crowley’s We Live in Time (due for release 2024 on A24). Over the years he has garnered great acclaim for his work on films such as Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant with the late Ryuichi Sakamoto and for his music to Netflix’s Fernando Meirelles’s The Two Popes. Dessner’s many musical collaborations include working with Philip GlassJohnny Greenwood, Bon Iver, Steve ReichPaul SimonBruce Springsteen, Sufjan Stevens, Taylor Swift and Thom Yorke.

Extraordinarily gifted, collaborative, secure in his own musical language and brimming with ideas, Bryce Dessner is a singular talent whose addition to the roster is warmly welcomed as he expands the repertoire with his new music, bringing with him his trademark original deep thinking, enthusiasm for all types of music and forward-thinking creative partnerships.

On this new arrangement with Sony Music, Bryce Dessner commented: “I am very much looking forward to an ongoing collaboration with Sony Music Masterworks and their wonderful team on several upcoming projects around my compositional work.”

Per Hauber, President, Sony Classical added: “As Bryce Dessner embarks on this exciting new chapter with Sony Classical, we look forward to showcasing his extraordinary talent and pushing boundaries of classical music together. We believe Sony Music Masterworks is the ideal new home for his releases and we warmly welcome him!”

Alexander Buhr, SVP International A&R adds: “Bryce is a uniquely gifted composer and musician, and a very important voice in contemporary music. With his broad range of influences and inspirations he crafts music that is daring and ambitious, while making instant emotional connection with the audience. All this is introduced perfectly on Solos. We are very happy to welcome Bryce to the Sony family.”

Bose Introduces The Soundlink Max

Today, Bose is turning up the volume on its acclaimed SoundLink Bluetooth speaker line with the introduction of the SoundLink Max Portable Speaker. This all-new portable speaker has lasting power, rugged durability, and delivers incredible sound for its size. Now you can set the vibe with your favorite playlist no matter where you go.

The SoundLink Max will be available on May 16th for $399 and can be pre-ordered starting today on Bose.com.

The SoundLink Max leverages decades of Bose research in acoustics to deliver incredible performance for your music that will help get the party started and keep it going. The system leverages a Bose Articulated Array with three transducers across the front of the speaker to deliver a spacious stereo experience that goes beyond the speaker itself. Two custom-designed passive radiators are responsible for providing a level of bass performance that also defies the speaker size. Using technology found in Bose soundbars and proprietary digital signal processing that dramatically minimizes distortion, the speaker reproduces full, natural sound regardless of what you’re listening to. The result is a system that allows you to hear every instrument, clear vocals, and the beat of your music, no matter where you’re listening or where the speaker is placed.

For added audio personalization, you can also adjust your listening experience with Adjustable EQ settings available in the Bose app, including bass, mid-range, and treble.

The SoundLink Max has a refined design with a powder-coated, silicone-wrapped steel enclosure for a premium look. Built to withstand bumps, drops, and bangs, it won’t peel or flake, and is resistant to corrosion and UV light. An IP67 rating protects against water, dust, rust, and shocks, so you don’t have to worry about where you take it or use it — by the pool, on the boat, at the beach or park, the SoundLink Max is ready to be put through the paces.

Measuring 10.42″ wide, 4.73″ high, and 4.13″ deep and weighing just under five pounds, the SoundLink Max has an integrated, removable rope handle so it’s easy to pick up and take with you. An optional rope carrying strap is also available if you want to throw the speaker over your shoulder for hands-free transport, as well as four optional color handle accessories so you can customize your speaker’s look.

The SoundLink Max can keep the music going from day to night with up to 20 hours of battery life, and if your phone battery starts to run low, the USB-C port lets you charge your mobile device, so you don’t lose your tunes.

The SoundLink Max comes in Black or Blue Dusk. It uses Bluetooth 5.3 and supports SBC and AAC codec standards for compatibility with nearly all Bluetooth devices. For high-definition audio, it uses Snapdragon Sound™ with the latest Qualcomm aptX Adaptive codec, which automatically adapts up to lossless quality. Snapdragon Sound technology allows for more seamless and robust connectivity with premium Android devices. The SoundLink Max also offers Google Fast Pair for added ease-of-use when pairing Android devices

For added convenience, an AUX input lets you enjoy tunes by connecting an audio jack to wired playback sources such as turntables and MP3 or CD players. A shortcut button on the speaker can be used for AUX switching or customized to enable Spotify Tap.

Bose is world renowned for its premium audio solutions for the home, on the go, and in the car. Since its founding in 1964 by Dr. Amar Bose, the company has been dedicated to delivering amazing sound experiences through innovation. And its passionate employees — engineers, researchers, music fanatics, and dreamers — have remained committed to the belief that sound is the most powerful force on earth; its ability to transform, transport, and make us feel alive. Country Music Hall Of Fame And Museum To Release Expanded Box Set ‘From Where I Stand: The Black Experience In Country Music’

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in collaboration with Warner Music Nashville is releasing an expanded version of the box set From Where I Stand: The Black Experience in Country Music. Originally released in 1998 by the museum and Warner, the updated CD collection spans a century of music and traces the many ways Black Americans have created, contributed to, and been influenced by country music. The set will be released on Friday, May 31, accompanied by a free-to-access online experience via the museum’s website.

Released more than 25 years ago, the original set’s creation was inspired and urged by Black country recording artist Cleve Francis and American Baptist College executive Nelson Wilson, who saw a disturbing gap in music history. “It’s a part of our history that’s been hidden from us,” Francis told the Washington Post upon the set’s release.

Now, the museum and Warner Music Nashville have once again collaborated to expand, redesign and update the box set. The new collection encompasses 82 tracks, with a fourth disc titled “Reclaiming the Heritage” that presents a fresh wave of Black artists in country and Americana who emerged through 2020. New essays by recording artists Rhiannon Giddens and Rissi Palmer join the original essays by distinguished music scholars and journalists.

Giddens states in her essay, “The most beautiful thing to me about the Black country renaissance is that its stars, who are finally starting to get the recognition they deserve, are truly using country music the way that, to me, it was born to be used. Their music reflects and highlights a cultural viewpoint that has been traditionally suppressed, shows the best of the American narrative, and, in the end, tells the important stories of now, for the generations of tomorrow.”

The CD set is packaged in a hard-bound booklet and illustrated with traditional quilt designs created years ago by the women of the Gee’s Bend community of Alabama, with cover type by visual artist and designer David Jon Walker. Each era of music is represented with a quilt from roughly the same time period as the music. The set is now available for preorder on the museum’s website.

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum collects, preserves and interprets country music and its history for the education and entertainment of diverse audiences. In exhibitions, publications, digital media and educational programs, the museum explores the cultural importance and enduring beauty of the art form. The museum is operated by the Country Music Foundation, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) educational organization chartered by the state of Tennessee in 1964. The museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, and is among the most-visited history museums in the U.S. The Country Music Foundation operates Historic RCA Studio B, Hatch Show Print poster shop, CMF Records, the Frist Library and Archive and CMF Press. Museum programs are supported in part by Metropolitan Nashville Arts Commission and Tennessee Arts Commission. More information about the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum is available at www.countrymusichalloffame.org or by calling (615) 416-2001.

Beginning May 31, all the music in the box set can be heard on the museum’s website via From Where I Stand: The Online Experience. The online experience is a free, educational resource containing all the incisive essays, archival photographs and video, and historical track notes for each selection. In addition, supplemental resources from the museum’s archive and resources for educators will be available.

The online experience will also include music that was unable to be licensed for the physical box set release, including Beyoncé and the Chicks’ collaboration on “Daddy Lessons,” Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” and Al Green’s version of “For the Good Times.”

On Tuesday evening, June 18, a variety of artists represented in the box set will celebrate the release of the project in a one-time-only concert in the museum’s CMA Theater. From Where I Stand: The Concert Celebration, presented by Amazon and Riverview Foundation, will be led by co-producers Rissi Palmer and Shannon Sanders. Artists performing in the concert include Blanco Brown, Cowboy Troy, Tony Jackson, Hubby Jenkins, Miko MarksWendy MotenRissi PalmerDarius Rucker, The War And Treaty and Barrence Whitfield.

Tickets to the free concert can be reserved beginning May 31 at 10 a.m. CT on the museum’s website, based on availability. The concert will be filmed and released on the museum’s website this fall.

Grand Opening Weekend Festivities with Back-to-Back Concerts by Superstars Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton Mark Unveiling of Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto

The highly anticipated Grand Opening festivities for Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto took place this weekend and began with a spectacular ceremony attended by esteemed dignitaries including Ontario Premier Doug FordOntario Minister of Finance Peter BethlenfalvyDuncan Hannay, CEO, Ontario Lottery and Gaming (OLG) and Matthew Anfinson, CEO, Great Canadian Entertainment. The Grand Opening of Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto marks a significant milestone in the entertainment and hospitality landscape of Toronto, promising unparalleled experiences while championing community enrichment and economic impact.

The weekend kicked off with sensational back-to-back concerts by three-time Grammy Award winner Gwen Stefani and five-time CMA Male Vocalist of the Year Blake Shelton, hosted in the resort’s state-of-the-art 5,000-person Theatre, the newest and most versatile live entertainment venue in Toronto.

As Gwen took to the stage on May 3, opening with “Sweetest Thing”, her vibrant energy instantly ignited the room. Singing hit after hit, Gwen’s charm, interactions with fans and the energy of the crowd created an electric atmosphere inside The Theatre. The crowd erupted when she playfully teased the audience about whether they would come see her husband, country music superstar Blake Shelton perform at the resort the following night. “I was just wondering, tomorrow night, just thinking about it, are you going to watch the Maple Leafs tomorrow (a reference to the team’s game 7 elimination game during the Stanley Cup playoffs) or are you going to watch Blake’s show? Don’t you think it’s curious, that of all the people in the world, including Blake Shelton, they picked Gwen Stefani to open the casino?”

The stage was set for an unforgettable evening the following night as country music superstar Shelton, with his signature charm and undeniable talent, weaved through a playlist that included favourites from his extensive catalogue of hits, including “Neon Light,” “Boys ‘Round Here,” and the heartfelt “God Gave Me You.” As he stood before the sold-out crowd, Shelton couldn’t resist poking fun at Stefani, teasing, “I know that Gwen Stefani played here last night, I know that that was yesterday, but let’s just say that Gwen Stefani opened for me for this weekend. For purposes of when we talk about this later in life, and we’re like, ‘oh, we were there that weekend when Gwen opened for Blake, that was cool!'” Amidst laughter and cheers, Shelton showered praise upon Canada’s newest and largest casino resort, marveling at its grandeur and amenities, exclaiming, “look at this place, not too bad, I love it! … it has a hotel, a casino, a racetrack….”

On Friday, festivities in the lobby of the 328,000 square foot casino commenced with a vibrant lion and dragon dance symbolizing prosperity, good luck, and success. Premier Ford, Minister Bethlenfalvy, Mr. Anfinson and Mr. Hannay, alongside Members of Provincial Parliament Hardeep Grewal, Dave Smith and Sam Oosterhoff participated in a traditional eye dotting ceremony in front of approximately 200 VIP guests. Attendees were treated to a short video presentation illustrating the evolution of the monumental private project situated on 33 acres adjacent to Woodbine Racetrack which will also include additional retail and restaurant development throughout the campus.

“We are immensely proud of this property, as it has been five years in the making and a $1 billion investment to bring it to life. And now with the unveiling of our new 5,000-person Theatre, with incredible shows by superstar performers Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton, we are not just filling a void in Toronto’s entertainment scene; we are creating a dynamic hub for live performances that will resonate far beyond our borders,” said Mr. Anfinson. “Coupled with our brand-new 400-room hotel, casino, dining venues and special events, we are providing elevated hospitality options and solidifying Toronto’s position as a top-tier destination for tourism and entertainment, and there is still more to come.”

Premier Ford remarked, “What a visionary team this is. They think to the future. Not just where we are today, but where we will be 10, 15, 20 years from now…this is incredible.” He highlighted the significance of the resort and emphasized Great Canadian Toronto’s role as an economic catalyst for Toronto and the Etobicoke area.

“Congratulations to Great Canadian Casino Resort on your grand opening. This venue is contributing $500 million in economic impact for Ontario, creating good jobs and with a world-class entertainment experience for customers for years to come,” said Minister Bethlenfalvy.

The resort, which generated over 2,700 construction hires to develop the property, currently supports over 1,700 jobs in its operations.  As part of its Community Benefits Agreement with the City of Toronto, Great Canadian Entertainment contributed $5M towards the construction of a new childcare centre for local residents and employees as well as adhering to certain thresholds for local and social hiring and procurement.

“Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto is truly a premier entertainment destination and OLG is proud to be involved in this impressive new offering in the GTA. In addition to the thousands of local jobs created, the City of Toronto has received $387 million in hosting payments from OLG since first opening in 1999. These payments can be reinvested in critical services, vital infrastructure, and economic development across the city,” said Mr. Hannay.

The unveiling ceremony reached its peak as Mr. Anfinson, Premier Ford, Minister Bethlenfalvy, and Mr. Hannay jointly pulled an oversize slot machine lever, igniting a cascade of confetti, lights and sounds and officially heralding the opening of the entertainment destination.

In a gesture underscoring the resort’s commitment to social responsibility, a donation of $50,000 was presented to The Haven on the Queensway, a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for those in need through various initiatives including food distribution, clothing assistance, and tailored programs addressing poverty and homelessness.

Designing a Safer Environment: The Role of Anti-Ligature Chairs

By Mitch Rice

Correctional and behavioral healthcare facilities face unique challenges. Residents of these facilities are at higher risk of self-harm or harming others. These organizations often invest in anti-ligature furnishings to reduce this risk. When choosing these pieces, the facilities must look for well-built, durable, and exceptionally safe products to guarantee they will hold up under demanding conditions.

What is Anti-Ligature Furniture?

Anti-ligature furniture is any furnishing that prevents a tie or binding from being secured. There are no points where a cord, bed sheets, rope, shoelaces, or other items can be attached to the furniture and used to harm oneself or another person. The anti-ligature chairs available in a space and other furnishings must be secured to a floor or wall to prevent their movement.

The Importance of Anti-Ligature Furniture

Safety is the main reason institutional facilities invest in anti-ligature furnishings. Less staff supervision is required when these furnishings are used in the facilities so staff members can focus on other tasks. However, improving safety within a facility doesn’t mean comfort must be sacrificed. Manufacturers continue to find ways to improve the designs so these furnishings are comfortable and safe. Staff members feel safer working around dangerous populations when these furnishings have been purchased.

Where Might Anti-Ligature Furnishings Be Used?

Institutional facilities might use anti-ligature furnishings in several locations. Resident living areas are one place where these items are commonly found. These rooms typically have less staff supervision, so ensuring the facility’s residents remain safe when they aren’t being monitored is essential. Furnishings for these rooms might include beds, storage shelves, writing desks, and nightstands. Other pieces may also be purchased, depending on the residents’ needs.

Mess Halls

Many residents gather together to eat meals, which can make it difficult to monitor everyone’s behavior. Facilities usually mount the furnishings to the floor to prevent unauthorized movement. Any disturbance in the mess hall can quickly escalate as numerous people are confined in one space. Anti-ligature furnishings reduce the risk of someone being harmed during a disturbance, including staff members overseeing the residents. They also make it more difficult for residents to hide contraband.

Common Areas

Mess halls aren’t the only place residents might gather in a facility. Recreation rooms and group therapy rooms are two other areas that benefit from installing anti-ligature furnishings. Anti-ligature game tables and chairs might be found in these areas. A facility may also invest in storage shelves and other pieces to increase safety.

Choosing the Right Furnishings

Anti-ligature furnishings differ in terms of quality. Facilities need to look for durable and long-lasting pieces. These items must withstand frequent use in a challenging environment while remaining safe. Look for pieces that are easy to clean and maintain and can be used for multiple purposes. They should also be attractive and comfortable. The right pieces will last for years while remaining safe and comfortable, saving the facility money and increasing resident satisfaction.

Anti-ligature furnishings have many documented benefits. The positive effects of these furnishings are seen throughout the facility. They increase the facility’s and its residents’ safety while eliminating the possibility of hidden contraband. These furnishings make any space within the facility seem more welcoming. When using anti-ligature furnishings, residents feel more at ease and experience less stress. The focus can turn to rehabilitation, which is the goal of these facilities today.
