Tenacious D’s Jack Black and Kyle Gass delivered a rocking medley of The Who’s greatest hits, including “Pinball Wizard,” “There’s a Doctor,” and “Smash the Mirror,” during their appearance on Howard Stern’s show.
My Next Read: “Some New Kind of Kick: A Memoir” by Kid Congo Powers and Chris Campion
An intimate, coming-of-age memoir by legendary guitarist Kid Congo Powers, detailing his experiences as a young, queer Mexican-American in 1970s Los Angeles through his rise in the glam rock and punk rock scenes.
Kid Congo Powers has been described as a “legendary guitarist and paragon of cool” with “the greatest resume ever of anyone in rock music.” That unique imprint on rock history stems from being a member of not one but three beloved, groundbreaking, and influential groups — Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, the Cramps, and last but not least, The Gun Club, the wildly inventive punk-blues band he co-founded.
Some New Kind of Kick begins as an intimate coming of age tale, of a young, queer, Chicano kid, growing up in a suburb east of East LA, in the mid-‘70s, exploring his sexual identity through glam rock. When a devastating personal tragedy crushes his teenage dreams, he finds solace and community through fandom, as founder (‘The Prez’) of the Ramones West Coast fan club, and immerses himself in the delinquent chaos of the early LA punk scene.
A chance encounter with another superfan, in the line outside the Whiskey-A-Go-Go to get into a Pere Ubu concert, changes the course of his life entirely. Jeffrey Lee Pierce, a misfit Chicano punk who runs the Blondie fan club, proposes they form a band. The Gun Club is born. So begins an unlikely transition from adoring fan to lauded performer. In Pierce, he finds brotherhood, a creative voice, and a common cause, but also a shared appetite for self-destruction that threatens to overwhelm them both.
Quirky, droll, and heartfelt, with a pitch-perfect evocation of time and place, and a wealth of richly-drawn supporting characters, Some New Kind of Kick is a memoir of personal transformation, addiction and recovery, friendship and belonging, set against the relentless creativity and excess of the ’70s and ’80s underground music scenes.

Thin Lizzy ‘Vagabonds Of The Western World’ 50th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition Being Released On November 17, 2023
2023 sees the 50th anniversary of what is widely regarded as Thin Lizzy’s breakthrough album ‘Vagabonds Of The Western World’ featuring their first UK top ten single ‘Whiskey In The Jar’ and ‘The Rocker’ which would go on to be one of the band’s signature tunes, so much so that it was the last song they ever performed at their final show in 1983.
To celebrate the album’s golden anniversary, deluxe CD and LP sets featuring rarities, radio sessions, unreleased music, rare photos, extensive sleevenotes by Mark Blake, and memorabilia will be released on 17th November and available for presale now here. The reissue suite also includes the album remixed in Dolby Atmos, a first for any Thin Lizzy record.
‘Vagabonds Of The Western World’ was Thin Lizzy’s third studio album and was initially released on the 21st of September 1973. It was the first to feature artwork by Jim Fitzpatrick, the creator of the famous red and black portrait of Che Guevara, who would go on to work with the band on classic albums such as Nightlife, Jailbreak, Johnny The Fox, Black Rose and Chinatown.
The album was the band’s last roll of the dice, as they had been working for two years with limited success. After the band moved to London from Dublin, they played every gig they could to keep themselves afloat. While messing around in their rehearsal studio, Phil Lynott started busking the old Irish folk song ‘Whiskey In The Jar’, which dates back to the 1700s. Their then manager remarked upon it and insisted that the band recorded, against their gut instincts. The single was released in November 1972 and rose to number 6 on the UK singles chart. However, the song didn’t sit well with the band, and despite its success, they left it off their forthcoming album.
Since then, the song, in arrangements influenced by The Lizzy version, has gone on to be covered by artists such as U2, Metallica, Belle & Sebastian, The Pogues, Pulp, Bryan Adams, Gary Moore and Simple Minds.
After a two-year struggle for recognition, Thin Lizzy had finally scored a breakthrough hit. It paved the way for the ‘Vagabonds Of The Western World’ album, but it would be their last with original guitarist Eric Bell. After an unsuccessful New Year’s Eve show in Belfast, Bell was no longer in the band, which paved the way for Lynott’s idea about having twin lead guitarists. After a short spell with very young Gary Moore filling in, Phil & Brian recruited American Scott Gorham and 18-year-old Glaswegian Brian Robertson, and a new adventure started.
The 50th anniversary of ‘Vagabonds Of The Western World’ is the sound of nascent Lizzy finally finding their feet and starting on their journey to be one of the greatest rock bands of the 70s and for Philip to be recognised as one of the best songwriters of his generation.

Country Icon Hank Williams Honoured With Hank 100 Centennial Celebration
As the 100th anniversary of Hank Williams’ birth approaches this Sunday, September 17, 2023, it’s impossible to overstate the impact and influence the legendary singer/songwriter with the distinctive voice has had on popular music. Lovingly called the “Hillbilly Shakespeare” for his poetic, evocative lyrics, unparalleled storytelling, and ability to encapsulate the joys and sorrows of the everyman in song, Williams was the father of contemporary country music and its first bona-fide superstar. A troubled figure that embodied his deeply emotional songs – he personified his heartrending music until his life was cut tragically short at the age of 29 at the height of his fame – he paved the way for all that would follow in his footsteps.
Hank Williams’ extraordinary career and remarkable legacy will be honored throughout the next year around the world with a host of events, new releases, a poignant cover, tribute shows, induction into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame Museum, and much more, beginning today.
“Hank Williams was a force of nature who left an incredible catalog of songs that are still seen as the highest standard of the craft of songwriting. UMe remains honored to be the stewards of his timeless songs and to help further his legacy by continuing to introduce new generations to his music,” said Bruce Resnikoff, President & CEO of UMe, the global catalog division of Universal Music Group.
“Hank Williams i one of the crucial cornerstones upon which the American artform of country music is built. He was able to fuse country with the blues and gospel in a way that stripped popular music to its essence with an appeal beyond genre and culture. His songs are performed every day in the honky-tonks on Lower Broadway in Nashville, but also by artists all over the world. We are proud to represent the evergreen catalog of Hank Williams and introduce new generations to one of the finest purveyors of three chords and the truth,” said Cindy Mabe, Chair & CEO of UMG Nashville.
Williams released dozens of hits in his brief time such as “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” “Honky Tonkin’,” “Hey, Good Lookin’,” “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” “Lovesick Blues,” and “Jambalaya (On The Bayou),” leaving an enduring legacy that only continues to grow year after year. When Williams made his debut at the Grand Ole Opry in 1949, he became the first performer to ever receive six encores. The pioneering songwriter was posthumously inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2010 Williams was awarded a posthumous Pulitzer Prize Special Citation for his “craftsmanship as a songwriter who expressed universal feelings with poignant simplicity and played a pivotal role in transforming country music into a major musical and cultural force in American life.” Upon inducting the trailblazing artist into its inaugural class of the Country Music Hall of Fame, they declared that Williams “set the agenda for contemporary country songcraft” and the “standard by which success is measured in country music.” He remains arguably the most important figure in country music history.
NEW DIGITAL COLLECTION, HANK WILLIAMS 100, OUT TODAY
The international centennial celebration Hank 100 launches today with the release of a new digital collection from Mercury Nashville/UMe entitled Hank Williams 100 that pairs 19 of Williams’ most popular songs and greatest hits across the musical and emotional spectrum. Divided into two parts, the first half offers up some of Williams’ more upbeat and lighthearted fare such as “Jambalaya (On The Bayou),” “Hey, Good Lookin’,” “Move It On Over,” “Honky Tonkin’,” “Settin’ The Woods On Fire,” and “I Saw The Light,” with his darker, more introspective and mournful material including “Lost Highway, “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” “Cold, Cold Heart,” “Lovesick Blues,” “Honky Tonk Blues,” “(I Heard That) Lonesome Whistle,” “I’ll Never Get Out of This World Alive” and “Alone and Forsaken” which was prominently featured on HBO’s hit show, “The Last Of Us,” earlier this year, introducing a whole new generation to Williams’ timeless music. Collectively these songs have inspired several books and biopics, soundtracked dozens of TV shows and films and been covered by hundreds of artists over the decades from across the world of country, rock, pop, jazz and beyond. SAM WILLIAMS HONORS GRANDFATHER HANK WILLIAMS’ LEGACY WITH HAUNTING RENDITION OF “I’M SO LONESOME I COULD CRY”
Nashville singer/songwriter Sam Williams celebrates country pioneer and grandfather Hank Williams’ legacy and 100th birthday with a soothing rendition of “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.” In true Sam Williams fashion, his beautiful voice is laced with hints of sorrow, vulnerability, and acceptance. Listen to “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” HERE.
“This song is special to me in many ways. I have always been hesitant to touch recording my grandfather’s songs, as there’s a sacredness to them. I wouldn’t want to do them injustice. ‘ISLICC’ has always been one of my favourites of his catalog,” Sam Williams shares. “The release coinciding with his centennial birthday is a bittersweet happy birthday gift to the man I never knew that everyone seems to know. It is a reclamation of my name, my destiny in my family’s legacy, and a statement to country music. History and homage, respect and reinvention, tattered and stolen coattails; I am a most honourable mention.”
Tomorrow, Sam Williams will make his return to the Grand Ole Opry for a special performance at 7:30pm. Gary Mule Deer, Logan Ledger, NEEDTOBREATHE, and more are set to perform. Tickets are available HERE.

The festive compilation shines a spotlight on Chicago’s unmistakable sound across 13 yuletide favorites, including “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Earlier this year, Chicago XXV: The Christmas Album and What’s It Gonna Be, Santa? were both certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Tickets for Chicago’s current U.S. tour are on sale now (see dates below). The tour will finish in Atlantic City, NJ, with two special shows on November 17 and 18, dubbed “Chicago & Friends.” These concerts will be filmed for “Decades Rock Live,” an award-winning concert television show that pairs legendary bands with today’s hottest artists.
At both shows, Chicago will perform its greatest hits with several special guests, including guitar virtuoso Steve Vai (paying tribute to Chicago’s original guitarist Terry Kath), Robin Thicke, Chris Daughtry, pedal steel virtuoso Robert Randolph, guitarist Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Judith Hill, and the world-renowned a cappella quintet, VoicePlay. The performances will be filmed on a custom-built LED stage in 4K and broadcast in late December. More details will be announced in the coming weeks.
Chicago holds a prestigious place as one of the longest-running and best-selling groups of all time. It’s the first American band to chart albums in Billboard’s Pop Top 40 in six consecutive decades, ranking as the highest charting American band in Billboard’s Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists, and the #4 band on Billboard’s All-Time Top Bands and Duos list. The group’s extensive accomplishments include: two Grammy Awards® and a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Recording Academy, multiple American Music Awards, 11 Number One singles, five consecutive Number One albums, and sales of over 100 million records, with 47 albums earning gold and platinum certification. Chicago was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, and its debut album, Chicago Transit Authority, was inducted into the Grammy® Hall Of Fame in 2014. In 2017, the Songwriters Hall of Fame inducted songwriters Robert Lamm (“25 or 6 to 4”, “Saturday In The Park”) and James Pankow (“Feelin’ Stronger Every Day,” “Make Me Smile”).

Neil Young 50th Anniversary Release Of ‘Time Fades Away’ Set For November 3 Release
It is impossible to pinpoint when a new album will become a classic. And while sometimes there are signals, often such a designation comes as a complete surprise. When Neil Young’s 1973 live album release TIME FADES AWAY arrived, it was obviously a left-field surprise. It was recorded with the Stray Gators, and featured previously unreleased songs. At a time when the Young’s popularity was surging following his highly successful studio album HARVEST, the new live album raised questions and even Young responded at the time, “TIME FADES AWAY was the worst record I ever made, but as a door of what was happening to me it was a great record.” In so many ways, this music is the perfect window on the unpredictable trajectory of one of rock & roll’s true pioneers. TIME FADES AWAY 50 will be released on limited edition clear vinyl only this November 3, via Reprise Records. This definitive 9 song iteration of the album contains a bonus track of “Last Trip To Tulsa,” which originally appeared on Archives Vol.2 Box set. This version of the song appears on vinyl only for the first time ever. TIME FADES AWAY 50 will be available at the Greedy Hand Store at Neil Young Archives (NYA) and music retailers everywhere. All Greedy Hand Store purchases come with free hi-res digital audio downloads from the Xstream Store at NYA.
The 50th anniversary release of TIME FADES AWAY is a true celebration of an era in time that marked music forever. In 1973 Young was writing songs that have lasted to this day, and taking bold changes with the way he presented them in-person. It’s a trademark of his that still continues. And with the Stray Gators performing with him — Jack Nitzsche (keyboards); Ben Keith (pedal steel guitar); Kenny Buttrey (drums), to be replaced by Johnny Barbata; and bassist Tim Drummond. David Crosby and Graham Nash also joined on harmony vocals and acoustic guitar. The real magic of this recording has always been how it was such an adventurous risk to take at a time when so much of the contemporary music then was driven by perfection. Recorded directly from the soundboard to 16-track tape and mixed simultaneously to LP cutting, in some ways Young and the band were traveling new sonic roads. TIME FADES AWAY was recorded directly after the mega-success of Young’s album HARVEST, and it feels like the blueprint of the twists and turns of a career where the blaster rockets are kicking.
And it wouldn’t be a Neil Young release unless a touch of serpentine is added to the adventure. Because of various reasons, TIME FADES AWAY was omitted from Young’s catalogue and not released on Compact Disc until 2017. A touch of mystery still follows the album, having been part of the Official Release Series Discs 5-8 Vinyl Box Set collection from Record Store Day in 2014. The live recordings from this tour have become part of a sense of adventure that runs through the recording career of someone who often takes the less traveled road. It comes at a time when Neil Young is exploring his own career with all the excitement he has always brought to his music.
TIME FADES AWAY 50 Track List:
Side A:
- Time Fades Away
- Journey Through The Past
- Yonder Stands The Sinner
- L.A.
- Love In Mind
Side B:
- Don’t Be Denied
- The Bridge
- Last Dance
- The Last Trip To Tulsa (50th Anniversary Bonus Track)
Matt Berry Recites Robert Crumb’s Blunt Letter to a Swedish Saxophonist Requesting a CD Review
In 2014, British actor Matt Berry delivered a side-splitting recitation of a scathing letter penned by cartoonist and record collector Robert Crumb. This letter was addressed to Swedish jazz saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, who had sent Crumb a CD for review. In a bombastic fashion, Crumb minced no words in expressing his disdain for Gustafsson’s playing. He even went so far as to inscribe ‘torturing the saxophone’ in silver ink on the CD cover. In response to this rather unconventional critique, Gustafsson humorously titled his next album ‘Torturing the Saxophone,’ proudly immortalizing Crumb’s words within the album’s liner notes.”
Garfunkel and Oates’ Kate Micucci’s Heartfelt Tribute Song Honors Mister Rogers’ Beautiful Legacy
In 2003, Kate Micucci, one-half of the renowned comedy duo Garfunkel and Oates, penned a poignant and heartfelt send-off song dedicated to the late, greatly missed Mister Rogers upon his passing.
Fast forward to today, as Kate Micucci gears up for the release of her new kids album, she has joined forces with composer Justin James and the talented Orchid Quartet to bring her original lyrics to life through music.
Additionally, the video for this touching tribute was brought to life by the gifted artist Robin Gonsalves, who meticulously animated Kate’s original drawings. The result is a heartwarming music video that beautifully honors the memory of the great Mister Rogers, a man whose legacy continues to teach kindness and empathy to countless young children and their parents.
