Phil Collins Details BOTH SIDES (ALL THE SIDES) 5-LP Vinyl Boxset

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of Phil Collins’ fifth solo studio album, Both Sides, it is to be reissued as a special edition 5-LP box set, releasing on September 20. Pre-order HERE.

This deluxe edition contains the remastered full original album, cut at half-speed by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios, and is a compendium of early demo tracks from the recording of the album as well as rarities from the singles originally released on the album – “Both Sides of the Story,” “Everyday” and “We Wait and We Wonder.” Both Sides (All The Sides) brings this full collection together with live tracks from the era, such as “Can’t Turn Back the Years,” “Both Sides of the Story” taken from Collins’ MTV Unplugged performance, “Doesn’t Anybody Stay Together Anymore” and more, as one release for the first time on vinyl. The set is housed in a slipcase with picture sleeves and a 16-page booklet containing newly written and extensive liner notes by esteemed journalist Michael Hann.

Proclaimed by Collins as his most personal album to that point in his career, Both Sides, originally released in 1993, is Phil Collins’ fifth album and was written, performed and produced all by Collins himself at his home studio in just six weeks. In a 2016 interview with The Guardian newspaper, Collins named it as his “favorite album from a songwriting and creative perspective,” going on to reveal how “… the songs just streamed out of me, and as a writer, that’s the kind of thing that you dream of.”

Upon its original release, the album reached No. 1 in the UK and throughout Europe and No. 13 in the US and has gone on to be a global multi-platinum seller.

As written by Michael Hann in his notes, “Time has magnified its virtues, and perspective has amplified its truths. Both Sides may not have been the monster hit its predecessors were, but it might be the most important record in the Phil Collins discography.”

Also announced today is Live From the Board: Official Bootleg, a limited-edition 10-inch vinyl for RSD Black Friday (November 29). This four-track EP was originally released in 1995 and features songs recorded on the Both Sides tour in 1994 under the artist name Phil Collins & The Indescribable Din. It features the tracks “Sussudio,” “Easy Lover,” “Separate Lives,” and “My Girl.”

Credit: Stevie Rae Gibbs

Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Environmental Solutions Initiative (MIT ESI), with the support of Coldplay, Warner Music Group (WMG), Live Nation, and Hope Solutions, has announced the assembly of an advisory committee as it enters the next phase of its Assessment Report of Live Music and Climate Change in the US and the UK.

This newly selected advisory committee will be made up of over 50 members with assorted, specialized expertise in live music and the event industry, as well as academia.

“As I’ve been saying for many years, we urgently need data-driven action on climate and nature breakdown in every area,” said Ellie Goulding, Artist & Advisory Committee member. This is the first time a study like this has taken place at this scale, including all the different parts of the industry ecosystem, from artists and promoters to management and labels and I’m really pleased to support that level of collaboration.”

Members of the committee were selected based on their individual areas of expertise across core areas which include, but are not limited to, venue management, tour management and production, artist relations, and sustainability. Their insights, data and expert perspectives will bolster the comprehensiveness and effectiveness of the overall report, ensuring that the proposed strategies are relevant and practical in implementation, thereby enhancing the potential to drive meaningful change across the live music industry.

“With the participation of the advisory committee and contributions of data from various sources, we are well on our way to producing a significant contribution to knowledge that can support meaningful actions to address climate change,” said Prof. John E. Fernandez, Director, MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative.

Additional contributions will come from various organizations, NGOs and charities that work within the live music ecosystem including REVERB, Support+Feed, Julie’s Bicycle, Global Citizen and Client Earth.

The report, which was initially anticipated to be complete in July 2024, has been extended to allow for more comprehensive data collection and analysis. It is now expected to be released in the Fall of 2024. The aim remains to:

  • develop a comprehensive assessment of the relationship between live music and climate change.
  • identify key areas where the industry and concert goers can make tangible improvements to reduce emissions and drive planet-positive outcomes.
  • provide a detailed analysis of the latest developments in technology and practices that industry players can tap into.

The report will seek open contributions of data from those with field-specific knowledge that will ultimately be used to suggest sector-specific and industry-wide decarbonization solutions. To contribute data to this report, please email p1lm@mit.edu.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to Host “Les Paul Thru the Lens”

Les Paul Thru the Lens, an exclusive traveling gallery of photos highlighting the life and career of Les Paul, the inventor, musician, and icon, will open at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio beginning Monday, July 15, 2024, through Monday, September 15, 2024. Guests of the Rock Hall will be treated to the exclusive photography exhibit featuring rare photos that chronicle the life of Les Paul. In addition, and for the first time ever, the Rock Hall will also exhibit three exclusive original portraits created by expressionist artist Leroy Neiman. These original art pieces have never been exhibited in a museum before. Les Paul Thru the Lens features Les’ celebrity friends, incredible moments in his life and career and some of the earliest part of his life. The limited engagement will be open to all guests of the Rock Hall.

The exhibit features 24 gallery-framed black-and-white photographs including Les’ life from a small child to his later career. It includes rare personal family photos, Les behind-the-scenes, famous friends, and photos of the man with a larger-than-life personality and amazing curiosity. Guests will be able to follow along while viewing each photograph with web-initiated storylines. From Les’ inventions born in his famous Hollywood garage studio to his popular reality TV show and appearances with Mary Ford, the exhibit provides fans with the opportunity to see Les like never before.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is located at 1100 East 9thStreet, Cleveland, Ohio, 44114. July and August hours are Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Thursdays – Saturdays, from 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.  The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (RRHOF) is a museum and hall of fame that celebrates the history of rock music and its impact on culture. The museum’s exhibits and collections include memorabilia, instruments, costumes and personal items from music’s greatest stars. The museum features interactive listening stations, short films, and informational areas about artists and bands. Founded in 1985, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame also hosts several Inductee Ceremonies.

The exhibit will be held in the museum’s Roots Gallery and is included in the museum’s regular admission.

“1988 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Les Paul’s creativity and innovation cannot be overstated and are foundational to rock and roll as we know it today, said Rock & Roll Hall of Fame President and CEO, Greg Harris. “This carefully curated collection of photographs documents his incredible journey as a pioneer, mentor and friend to other artists, and we are grateful to the Les Paul Foundation for bringing this exhibit to Cleveland for fans to enjoy and are thrilled it will join our other featured exhibits celebrating the contributions of so many different types of artists in our Revolutionary Women In Music and Holla If Ya Hear Me exhibits.”

“Les was an icon whose inventions paved the way for musicians all over the globe. His curiosity gave us the most important inventions in the music industry which are still used today. That is why it feels so fitting that The Les Paul Foundation’s traveling exhibit, “Les Paul Thru the Lens” will exclusively exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum from July to September. In 1988 Les was inducted into the Rock Hall and in 2008 The Rock Hall of Fame produced a star-studded Tribute to Les which would serve as the last one he would attend prior to his passing in 2009. We are thrilled to have this opportunity where guests of the Rock Hall will be able to experience Les’ life from early childhood to his career at all stages when they visit the exhibit. The rare photographs depict many important people and moments in Les’ life. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will also be the first venue to also exhibit three extraordinary original art pieces created by expressionist artist Leroy Neiman. The portraits by Neiman were done when he visited Les when he performed at The Iridium in New York many years ago. They have never been made public until now.. Les would be so happy to be back at the Rock Hall for this special engagement. We hope everyone who passes through the Hall’s doors gets to know and love Les Paul like we do.”  – Michael Braunstein, Executive Director, the Les Paul Foundation
