Patti Smith Reads Her Own Goodbye Letter To Robert Mapplethorpe

Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe enjoyed a close, often intense relationship that began in 1967 and ended 21 years later, when Robert died some time after being diagnosed with AIDS. In the days preceding his untimely death, Patti wrote her soul mate a letter — a letter which he sadly didn’t get a chance to read.

Watch Patti Smith herself read it at Letters Live at The Town Hall, Manhattan late this spring.

MIT, Coldplay, Warner Music, Live Nation, & Hope Solutions Form Advisory Committee on Live Music & Climate Change

Credit: Stevie Rae Gibbs

Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Environmental Solutions Initiative (MIT ESI), with the support of Coldplay, Warner Music Group (WMG), Live Nation, and Hope Solutions, has announced the assembly of an advisory committee as it enters the next phase of its Assessment Report of Live Music and Climate Change in the US and the UK.

This newly selected advisory committee will be made up of over 50 members with assorted, specialized expertise in live music and the event industry, as well as academia.

“As I’ve been saying for many years, we urgently need data-driven action on climate and nature breakdown in every area,” said Ellie Goulding, Artist & Advisory Committee member. This is the first time a study like this has taken place at this scale, including all the different parts of the industry ecosystem, from artists and promoters to management and labels and I’m really pleased to support that level of collaboration.”

Members of the committee were selected based on their individual areas of expertise across core areas which include, but are not limited to, venue management, tour management and production, artist relations, and sustainability. Their insights, data and expert perspectives will bolster the comprehensiveness and effectiveness of the overall report, ensuring that the proposed strategies are relevant and practical in implementation, thereby enhancing the potential to drive meaningful change across the live music industry.

“With the participation of the advisory committee and contributions of data from various sources, we are well on our way to producing a significant contribution to knowledge that can support meaningful actions to address climate change,” said Prof. John E. Fernandez, Director, MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative.

Additional contributions will come from various organizations, NGOs and charities that work within the live music ecosystem including REVERB, Support+Feed, Julie’s Bicycle, Global Citizen and Client Earth.

The report, which was initially anticipated to be complete in July 2024, has been extended to allow for more comprehensive data collection and analysis. It is now expected to be released in the Fall of 2024. The aim remains to:

  • develop a comprehensive assessment of the relationship between live music and climate change.
  • identify key areas where the industry and concert goers can make tangible improvements to reduce emissions and drive planet-positive outcomes.
  • provide a detailed analysis of the latest developments in technology and practices that industry players can tap into.

The report will seek open contributions of data from those with field-specific knowledge that will ultimately be used to suggest sector-specific and industry-wide decarbonization solutions. To contribute data to this report, please email p1lm@mit.edu.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to Host “Les Paul Thru the Lens”

Les Paul Thru the Lens, an exclusive traveling gallery of photos highlighting the life and career of Les Paul, the inventor, musician, and icon, will open at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio beginning Monday, July 15, 2024, through Monday, September 15, 2024. Guests of the Rock Hall will be treated to the exclusive photography exhibit featuring rare photos that chronicle the life of Les Paul. In addition, and for the first time ever, the Rock Hall will also exhibit three exclusive original portraits created by expressionist artist Leroy Neiman. These original art pieces have never been exhibited in a museum before. Les Paul Thru the Lens features Les’ celebrity friends, incredible moments in his life and career and some of the earliest part of his life. The limited engagement will be open to all guests of the Rock Hall.

The exhibit features 24 gallery-framed black-and-white photographs including Les’ life from a small child to his later career. It includes rare personal family photos, Les behind-the-scenes, famous friends, and photos of the man with a larger-than-life personality and amazing curiosity. Guests will be able to follow along while viewing each photograph with web-initiated storylines. From Les’ inventions born in his famous Hollywood garage studio to his popular reality TV show and appearances with Mary Ford, the exhibit provides fans with the opportunity to see Les like never before.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is located at 1100 East 9thStreet, Cleveland, Ohio, 44114. July and August hours are Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Thursdays – Saturdays, from 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.  The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (RRHOF) is a museum and hall of fame that celebrates the history of rock music and its impact on culture. The museum’s exhibits and collections include memorabilia, instruments, costumes and personal items from music’s greatest stars. The museum features interactive listening stations, short films, and informational areas about artists and bands. Founded in 1985, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame also hosts several Inductee Ceremonies.

The exhibit will be held in the museum’s Roots Gallery and is included in the museum’s regular admission.

“1988 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Les Paul’s creativity and innovation cannot be overstated and are foundational to rock and roll as we know it today, said Rock & Roll Hall of Fame President and CEO, Greg Harris. “This carefully curated collection of photographs documents his incredible journey as a pioneer, mentor and friend to other artists, and we are grateful to the Les Paul Foundation for bringing this exhibit to Cleveland for fans to enjoy and are thrilled it will join our other featured exhibits celebrating the contributions of so many different types of artists in our Revolutionary Women In Music and Holla If Ya Hear Me exhibits.”

“Les was an icon whose inventions paved the way for musicians all over the globe. His curiosity gave us the most important inventions in the music industry which are still used today. That is why it feels so fitting that The Les Paul Foundation’s traveling exhibit, “Les Paul Thru the Lens” will exclusively exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum from July to September. In 1988 Les was inducted into the Rock Hall and in 2008 The Rock Hall of Fame produced a star-studded Tribute to Les which would serve as the last one he would attend prior to his passing in 2009. We are thrilled to have this opportunity where guests of the Rock Hall will be able to experience Les’ life from early childhood to his career at all stages when they visit the exhibit. The rare photographs depict many important people and moments in Les’ life. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will also be the first venue to also exhibit three extraordinary original art pieces created by expressionist artist Leroy Neiman. The portraits by Neiman were done when he visited Les when he performed at The Iridium in New York many years ago. They have never been made public until now.. Les would be so happy to be back at the Rock Hall for this special engagement. We hope everyone who passes through the Hall’s doors gets to know and love Les Paul like we do.”  – Michael Braunstein, Executive Director, the Les Paul Foundation

Bob Dylan’s 1974 Live Recordings to be Released In 27-CD Set on September 20

Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release The 1974 Live Recordings on Friday, September 20, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Bob Dylan’s return to touring that year. Featuring all professionally recorded shows from the artist’s 1974 performances backed by The Band, the collection will be available as a deluxe box set across 27 CDs. The 1974 Live Recordings offers fans 417 previously-unreleased Bob Dylan live tracks – including 133 recordings newly mixed from 16-track tape, and every single surviving soundboard recording – along with new liner notes by journalist and critic Elizabeth Nelson.

In conjunction with The 1974 Live Recordings, Third Man Records has announced the September release of The 1974 Live Recordings – The Missing Songs From Before the Flood, a 3-LP / 1 x 7-inch set culled from the same recordings, featuring hand selected versions of every song Bob Dylan recorded that was not included on the original 1974 live album. Pressed Bob Dylan’s 1974 Tour marked his first time touring live in eight years and reunited him with The Band – who had become widely renowned in their own right since backing the artist nearly a decade earlier. Booked into arenas for the first time ever, Bob Dylan and The Band performed 30 dates in 42 days (often playing two sets per day) before an average audience of 18,500 – helping set a new standard for what rock concerts could look and sound like. And in front of those crowds, they brought an energy that Rolling Stone’s Ben Fong-Torres described as “searing and soaring, unified and precise…excellent in itself.” Music critic Robert Christgau compared the sound to Bob Dylan “running over his old songs like a truck.”

Tour ‘74 kicked off January 3, 1974, at Chicago Stadium – the largest indoor arena in the world at the time it was built – with a tense and combative rip through ultimate deep-cut “Hero Blues,” an acoustic-gone-electric outtake from The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan sessions, that he had scarcely performed before – or since. Additional rarities – like a wildly-reinvented “Ballad Of Hollis Brown,” “Song to Woody” (not performed since 1962) and Planet Waves outtake “Nobody ‘Cept You” – would be well received in the tour’s first nights. “We were booed off of every stage in Europe,” The Band’s Robbie Robertson recalled to Newsweek of their previous run together. “What happened tonight in Chicago is so reassuring for us.”

The reception wasn’t the only thing that had changed since Bob Dylan and The Band last toured together in 1966. Since then, The Band had released six LPs, played Woodstock and other famous stages, and recorded a series of historic sessions with Bob Dylan – from The Basement Tapes to Planet Waves. For his part, Bob Dylan had effectively retired from the road altogether following a 1966 motorcycle accident, yet was still “widely regarded as the most influential and significant star in the last 10 years of American popular music,” according to The New York Times.

Though they might not have known it at the time, Bob Dylan and The Band were at the vanguard of a new era. Tour ‘74 would help create the template for the major rock tour, and codify many of its shared experiences – from the sight of audiences holding up lighters en masse (as captured in the iconic cover image for Before The Flood), to the bright flash of the house lights during a show’s signal moment, in this case their performance of “Like A Rolling Stone.” Likewise many songs performed live for the first time on Tour ‘74 – “All Along The Watchtower,” “Forever Young” and the show’s eventual opener-and-closer “Most Likely You Go Your Way (and I’ll Go Mine)” – would take on a life of their own.

At the outset, the 1974 Tour was captured on a stereo soundboard mix, on both 1⁄4” tape and cassette. By tour’s end, Asylum Records’ David Geffen had commissioned recordings on multitrack tape, the standard at the time, for eventual release on Before The Flood. The 1974 Live Recordings includes it all – the cassettes and 1⁄4” tapes, and the shows that were recorded on 16-track tape, newly-mixed for this collection.
