Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova Did a Ted Talk

Nadya Tolokonnikova, creator of the anti-Putin resistance group Pussy Riot, was named a top enemy of Russia for speaking out against Vladimir Putin’s dictatorship throughout the last decade. In this inspiring TED Talk, she tells the story of her imprisonment and exile, shares what motivates her resistance and delivers a powerful message to Putin himself.

For some of us, living courageously is a choice. For others, like our friends in Ukraine, this is not a choice – it is a matter of survival. Putin is embarrassed that Ukraine chose truth and democracy. russians are bombing hospitals, maternity wards, schools – raping & killing civilians and throwing their bodies in mass graves.

Putin, and all those who support him are dead inside and must be defeated.

While I’m here – I’d like to address Vladimir Putin directly – wanted criminal to wanted criminal:

The Kremlin walls have become your prison walls. You have already lost, and the world stands with the brave people of Ukraine.

When you are in your final hour, praying, know this:  that whoever you pray to is on our side. And whoever that is … she will not forgive your crimes against humanity.

Conceptual performance artist and activist Nadya Tolokonnikova is the creator of Pussy Riot, a global feminist protest art movement. Today, hundreds of people identify as a part of the Pussy Riot community.

She was sentenced in 2012 to 2 years’ imprisonment following an anti-Putin performance. Went through a hunger strike protesting savage prison conditions and ended up being sent far away to a Siberian penal colony, where she managed to maintain her artistic activity and with her prison punk band she made a tour around Siberian labor camps. Published a book “Read and riot: Pussy Riot’s guide to activism”.

Co-founder of independent news service and media outlet, Mediazona, she has spoken before the US Congress, British Parliament, European Parliament, appeared as herself on season 3 of House of Cards, performed at Banksy’s “Dismaland” exhibition.

Pussy Riot’s Punk-prayer was named by The Guardian among the best art pieces of the 21st century (“feminist, explicitly anti-Putin, protesting the banning of gay pride and the Orthodox church’s support of the president”), collaborated with Bansky on his Dismaland exhibition, endorsed by Marina Abramovic and Ai Weiwei, created an immersive experience in London’s Saatchi gallery.

Pussy Riot stands for gender fluidity, inclusivity, matriarchy, love, laughter, decentralization, anarchy, and anti-authoritarianism.

Tel Aviv Singer-Songwriter Tzvika Force Releases Emotional Ballad “I am moon”

Love can and will conquer all. It can be used as a guiding light towards a path for deeper connections with the people who are closest to you. This love-inspired creation is beautifully illustrated by the talented Israeli pianist and vocalist Tzvika Force on his latest single “I am moon.”

This powerful and energetic ballad by Tel Aviv-based Tzvika Lorber – aka Tzvika Force, paints an emotional, yet vulnerable piece about the desire and need for connectivity with someone else. “Summer came up too fast. Never hold it that way. I feel I can barely glow. But I believe that you can,” he begins. These words express a sense of uncertainty with the sudden change but strive for the feeling of comfort that comes when everything falls into place.

This is evident in the chorus when you hear Tzvika sing:

“Hold me now.
And save us now.
It’s never something you can’t see.
Hold me now.
And save us both.
And let me guide your way.”

Following the chorus, Tzvika transitions into a faster pace with deeper vocals piercing through, reminiscent of a Rufus Wainwright vibe singing “I am moon. My lightness is bare. Moon, My lightness is bare to you.”

The independent alternative songwriter describes the truth and meaning behind the creation of this masterpiece by saying, “It is a love song, a promise to our loved ones that we are there for them as the moon is always there in the heights to support, protect and light the way.”

Written on the piano and inspired by the 1000 Forms of Fear album by the talented Australian singer-songwriter – Sia, this song about the true meaning of love was recorded and produced at Tzvika’s home studio on his album “Mine,” released late last year.

Towards the end of the song, the edgy and creative storyteller can be heard pleading through his deep and electric vocals, about his partner “shining like a movie star,” emphasizing his emotional state and exposing his vulnerability with the expectation that he receives the same sentiments in return to help the relationship grow even further.

Conquering Rockabilly, Toronto’s Miss Tammy Darling Makes Sparks Fly in RnB/Soul Single “Electric Love”

When you start getting romantic feelings for someone, you might feel a surge of passion that comes from feeling a strong connection with them. Miss Tammy Darling can distinctively be found in the rockabilly world, but for “Electric Love,” she’s expressing these buzzy feelings of romance in authentically sliding into the RnB and Soul genres.

At the start of the song, smooth horns, and Darling’s passionate vocals slither into the listener’s ears. Once the first verse kicks in, so does the guitar. When combined with Darling’s vocals and the horns, the guitar’s casual strums seem to gently dance along. This enhances the song’s feel-good romance mood.

“There’s a strong pull in your direction,
Never felt this kinda connection.
Sparks start flying when you’re around.
I’m soaring way off the ground.
Surge of passion through every cell,
Open the windows, it’s hot as hell
Fireworks ignite right through my veins,
Lock me up, I’ll be your ball and chain.”

Of the song’s inspiration, Darling states, “With a love of old Hollywood and a fascination with the past, my original music is influenced by the iconic sounds of the 1950’s and 1960’s. I hope to revitalize these retro sounds, keeping them alive for future generations to enjoy.”

In fact, Darling’s song is almost like a modern version of Wanda Jackson’s “Cool Love.” While Jackson’s track displays the blues and country roots of rockabilly, Darling’s track uses jazz and country. A commonality that they both share is that they both unabashedly state their desires for an exciting and sensual romance.

Darling asserts this when she states, “I enjoy writing tunes that appeal to a multigenerational audience and encourage listeners to take a step back in time. Occasionally midcentury music presents outdated values. In sticking to the contemporary vintage community’s mantra, “vintage style, not vintage values,” I infuse these old styles with modern values and a fresh female perspective.

Miss Tammy Darling combines her love of vintage Hollywood movies and a retro 50’s and 60’s sound with modern sensibilities to introduce rockabilly to a new generation. She began performing covers of iconic artists such as Brenda Lee and Doris Day, most notably covering Gayla Peevy’s “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” in 2019.

Two years later, Darling took inspiration from being a cocktail enthusiast and released her first original song, “Mr. Bartender”, which resulted in Darryl Sterdan of Tinnitist to name her “Toronto’s Queen of Rockabilly”. In March 2023, Darling released her debut EP “Electric Love”.

Nanaimo’s Laura Kelsey Releases New EP ‘Hunting Season’ With Concert April 29 at The Globe Live Studio

Nanaimo, BC-based singer-songwriter Laura Kelsey is writing modern mythology with her debut EP Hunting Season released on April 29, 2023

With a powerhouse voice like Evanescence’s Amy Lee and a timeless vibe like Stevie Nicks, prepare to be enchanted by Kelsey’s captivating soundscapes and mystical lyrics. Whether she’s casting a banishing spell after receiving an ex’s friend request on “Your Stormy Ways” or singing a unique creation story on the title track, Laura effortlessly infuses earthy magic into her musical storytelling.

“Hunting Season,” Kelsey explains, “is about the cycles of life and seasons. It delves into this mythological idea I created years ago, about an underground pool of energy that sits below a countless number of glowing strings. Each string holds the energy of a living thing on Earth — whether human, plant or animal — and, when a life ends, its string snaps and its energy joins the pool below to be reformed into a new life, a new string. The song, with its dreamy feel, explores cycles in an underground world where every living thing’s life energy is suspended in strings above a great pool. When something dies, its string snaps and its energy rejoins the pool to be dispersed and recreated.”

After 10 years of applying for funding, Kelsey finally received a grant from Creative BC to record her debut EP. While primarily a singer-songwriter, Kelsey has fronted metal, blues, and folk bands for over a decade. As a solo artist, she brings these musical influences together to create unique songs inspired by natural West Coast elements, honesty, and dreams.

“Overall,” she says, “the album is about cycles and energy.”

Alongside her music, Kelsey is also a talented filmmaker, and has woven together the EP’s larger folklore through both music videos and visual art. The album’s cover art was shot by photographer and filmmaker Arpen Jhajj, owner of Salt & Charcoal Pictures, and features a dazzling head piece created by floral artist Lisa of Fleur De Lii and a dress handmade by local Valley of Wanderlust.

“Despite it being a very hot day,” Kelsey recalls, “I spent a lot of time in the water and ended up having blue lips for some of the photos because I was so cold!”

The Hunting Season EP was recorded and mixed on Bowen Island, B.C., by producer Winston Hauschild at the Treehouse Studio.

Sultans of String and Dr. Duke Redbird Release New Single “Our Mother the Earth”

‘Our Mother the Earth’ is a collaboration between legendary Chippewa/Anishinaabe Elder Dr. Duke Redbird and Sultans of String. It is the third single of the upcoming album entitled ‘Walking Through the Fire’ (Sept 22, 2023 release), a CD and concert of collaborations with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit artists across Turtle Island.

Redbird was inspired by the idea that every country has a national anthem, yet there is no anthem for Our Mother the Earth. Redbird said, “if people included an anthem to the Earth along with their national anthem at every event, it would serve to acknowledge our identity, values, and sense of pride in the fact that we are all children of the Earth.” With this idea in mind, he wrote the poem Our Mother the Earth.

A Great Mystery
Created the Universe
And manifested a blue geosphere
A radiant planet
The marvelous Earth
The Mother who gave us birth
The genesis of all, we hold dear
With all the billions of stars in space
Only the Earth could create.
The perfect human birthing place
A little sphere of cosmic dust
Was the spark of spirit given to us (…)

“We can use our imaginations, innovation, creativity, and capacity to evolve in a cooperative way with nature, in a symbiotic relationship. The definition of love is when another entity’s happiness is essential to our own. Right now, the happiness of the Earth is not essential to those industries that are exploiting her resources purely for profit. When we realize that we, as humans, are born fully integrated with the spirit of the Earth… we will replace exploiting with exploring and begin to truly love her.”

‘Our Mother the Earth’ is co-produced by Chris McKhool, bandleader of multiple award-winning Sultans of String, Grammy winning engineer John “Beetle” Bailey, and guitarist Kevin Laliberté. The bed tracks were recorded on Six Nations land at the Indigenous owned Jukasa Studios, a multi-million-dollar studio created for world class and developing artists to make music in surroundings rich in spirit and tradition.

McKhool was recently awarded the JAYU’s Dr. Duke Redbird Lifetime Achievement Award for his work with Truth and Reconciliation’s 94 Calls to Action.

Sonic Exploring MODERN ANDY Releases “Beginnings” From New Self-Titled EP

What would happen if you held a radio frequency amplifier to an Andy Warhol painting, if the great pop art of the mid 20th century could come alive, sing, orchestrate? Modern Andy’s debut self-titled EP is here to answer that question, presenting whimsy-soaked satire of the popular imagination as a sonic experience.

Modern Andy is the creation of Eric Paul Tutskey, a multi-instrumentalist and genre-fluid musician currently based in St. Louis, Missouri. Drawing inspiration from the late, great Andy Warhol, the “Modern Andy” character aims to poke fun at popular music while using it as a creative vessel for satire. This EP is Modern Andy’s story, providing a soundtrack to his “15 minutes of fame” journey.

“The only requirement I made of myself for this EP was to push myself into new uncomfortable areas to grow as a musician and to hone my craft as a songwriter,” says Tutskey. “I was sick of being labeled a DJ so I decided to only play live instruments on this EP without the use of loops, click tracks or anything pre-produced… I am a self-taught musician and I pride myself on this fact. I played 12 different instruments on this EP. I self produced the EP, I was the recording engineer on the EP and the songwriter for all the songs. Needless to say, it was an exhausting endeavor and one that made me a much stronger songwriter.”

Two of the tracks (The Other Side & Hazel Eyes) feature the stunning vocal stylings of Cara Ristau, who adds a female perspective to Modern Andy’s story, and another view of his journey through the construct of relationships and living life amongst others, both in the physical realm and the ethereal.

Modern Andy’s signature sound is derived from a combination of analog instruments and recording techniques fused with electronic music roots, giving each release its own heartbeat. With a background in audio engineering, television broadcast, and event production, Modern Andy is driven to create songs that are hand-tailored, aesthetically precise, and imaginative, creating a deeply personal listening experience for everyone.

The Hollywood-based Indimore Records picked up Modern Andy’s debut EP in February of 2023, and have released it under their eponymous label. This January, Modern Andy received 3 Honorable Mentions with Special Recognition from the SongDoor International SongWriting Competition, with “Yours Truly” coming in with Top Honors. He describes making this EP as “one of the best artistic decisions he has ever made.”
