Mirvish Productions to Dim Marquee Lights to Honour Donald Sutherland

Donald Sutherland, who died on June 20, 2024 at the age of 88, was one of the giants of film. But he began his career as a stage actor while still a student at the University of Toronto, where he was studying engineering. He acted in productions at Hart House Theatre and soon added drama to his studies. Upon graduating in 1958, he moved to the UK to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and to continue his work on stage.

While Sutherland made over 200 films and television shows in a six-decade career, he returned to the stage, his first passion, when his schedule allowed. From February 17 to April 1, 2000, Sutherland starred in Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt’s Enigma Variations at Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theatre. This award-winning French drama was translated into English by Sutherland’s son, Roeg, directed by renowned stage director Anthony Page, and produced by David and Ed Mirvish, Emmanuel Azenberg and Francine Racette, Sutherland’s wife. The production, co-starring John Rubinstein, transferred to London’s West End where it played at the Savoy Theatre from May 31 to July 29, 2000.

It was during the Toronto run of Enigma Variations that Sutherland’s star on Canada’s Walk of Fame was unveiled. It is on the sidewalk in front of the Royal Alexandra Theatre.

There is also another Sutherland connection with the Royal Alexandra Theatre. In 1997 at the same theatre, Kiefer Sutherland starred as Tom, opposite his mother, Shirley Douglas, as Amanda in a production of The Glass Menagerie. Kiefer is the son of Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas.

To honour Donald Sutherland, the marquee lights of the Royal Alexandra Theatre will be dimmed on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at the traditional curtain time of 8 pm.

Omar Apollo Announces North American Headline Tour Launching August 20

After unveiling his plans for his sophomore album, God Said No, Omar Apollo is announcing an accompanying tour, which will commence on August 20th in his home state of Indiana. Tonight, Omar Apollo is sharing “Less Of You,” the third single from his forthcoming album, set for release on June 28th via Warner Records. The driving single showcases a new musical direction for Omar, stemming from his exploration of London’s nightlife during the recording of God Said No last year.

The God Said No Tour will include 29 dates, with stops in New York City, Boston, Toronto, Houston, and more. Later performances will see Apollo grace iconic venues such as Red Rocks Amphitheatre, The Greek Theatre, and Hollywood Bowl, among others.

Support acts will include Kevin Abstract, Malcolm Todd and Ravyn Lenae on select dates.

God Said No was executive produced by Teo Halm and features musician Mustafa and actor Pedro Pascal. The album title is Omar’s interpretation of “lo que sera, sera” which translates to “whatever will be, will be” or “it is what it is.” The phrase embodies the album with Omar’s tongue-in-cheek humorous outlook on the suffering that comes from surrendering and accepting whatever is thrown at you by life, a relationship or lover.

Arriving a little over two years after the release of his critically acclaimed debut album Ivory which earned Apollo a Best New Artist nominee at the 2023 Grammys, God Said No was born out of the whirlwind that followed his debut and nonstop touring, on his headline tour, in support of SZA’s SOS arena tour along with Billie Eilish’s Latin American stadium tour. Apollo booked a three-month stay in London that fall, where he ruminated on walks down rain-soaked cobblestone streets, and mined the poems of Mary Oliver, Victoria Chang, and Ocean Vuong for inspiration. Speaking on musical inspirations with Rolling Stone in the May issue, Omar cited artists like Kate Bush, Labi Siffre, Giorgio Moroder, Beyoncé, and Lana del Rey as being in heavy rotation during that time in London.

Camped out in London’s legendary Abbey Road Studios with his trusted collaborators, producers Halm, Carter Lang, and Blake Slatkin, Apollo built the bones of his melodrama. The 14-track album is a survey of the emotional wreckage that followed the end of a torrid love affair. Apollo borrowed the title from something his friend said while processing the relationship. “I gave it my everything,” Apollo says, “And God said ‘no.’” What began during that London trip resulted in his most soul-bearing and immediate body of work, fine-tuned across studios in Los Angeles, New York City, and Miami towards the end of 2023.

2022 saw Omar Apollo release his debut album Ivory which was widely celebrated for its ability to blur genre lines and language barriers. This translated to the Grammy nomination in 2023 for Best New Artist and earned Apollo commercial success, including a 7-week run on the Billboard Hot 100 for his first RIAA-certified platinum record, “Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me At All).” Omar also enjoyed critical acclaim, landing on year-end lists from esteemed media outlets such as NPR, The FADER, Billboard, Complex, Esquire, and Rolling Stone, among others. Following the release of his debut album, he performed on NPR’s Tiny Desk, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and unveiled his single “Killing Me” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Additionally, Omar was named the first ambassador for skincare brand Youth to the People and was the face of LOEWE’s menswear campaign under the creative direction of Jonathan Anderson, which Apollo previewed on the cover of the latest issue of VMAN. Last month, Omar made a splash during his Met Gala debut, wearing a custom suit by LOEWE that earned him Best Dressed nods from The Cut, Vogue, and WWD, among others.

About Omar Apollo and God Said No:

Lucki Announces First U.S. Headline Run ‘the Gemini Tour’

Today, rapper and record producer LUCKI announced his first U.S. headline run with The Gemini Tour taking place this summer. Produced by Live Nation, the 27-date tour kicks off on Thursday, July 18 in Raleigh, NC at The Ritz, with stops in Miami, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Boston, Brooklyn, and more before wrapping up on Saturday, September 7 in Atlanta, GA at the Coca-Cola Roxy.

LUCKI separated himself from the pack years ago. He built a devoted fan following by creating songs packed with vulnerability and experience. His lyrics proved to be far more personal than preachy. In 2022, the same year the 26-year-old rapper released his debut album, FLAWLESS LIKE ME, the Chicago native achieved over 25,000 sales first week and reached #12 on the charts.

LUCKI showed growth, maturity, and perspective—without losing the soul that made him relatable. Video / singles “Super Urus” and “New Drank” are recent massive reminders, with over 50 million streams each, that a versatile artist who had a powerful introduction during the mid-2010s is still on the ascent.

LC Camel, Jr. hails from Chicago’s storied West Side. Now a father, LUCKI has credited his parents for their dedication. In 2013, roughly a year into recording, the budding artist self-released Alternative Trap inspired by an array of sounds. The free mixtape arrived amid a Chicago Rap Renaissance that thoughtful and innovative young people helmed. At just 17, the rapper, then known as Lucki Eck$, captured the angst and confusion of his peer group with a streak for the wild side. The Chicago Reader credited him as the city’s “best conscious rapper” not long after. He became a sought-out collaborator across styles, working with FKA Twigs, Danny Brown, Future, Playboi Carti, and Earl Sweatshirt. The project caught on, earning critical acclaim and putting LUCKI on the international map.

In the years that followed, LUCKI abbreviated his moniker to match his given name. He also launched the Freewave EP series, a display of quantity without compromising quality. Despite the expanding catalog, in mid-2016, 20-year-old LUCKI stepped out of the spotlight for nearly a year to be a proper father and self-care. In lyrics and interviews, the artist has been transparent about bouts with depression, prescription drug addiction, and a social disconnect.

By 2017, LUCKI returned to form, releasing a slew of projects. “Sunset” reached a new peak, streaming over 40 million times to date, with an enchanting beat and confessional lyrics. In 2019, Lucki’s Days B4 III built on that momentum, powered by anthems like “4 The Betta” and “Randomly.” Raps about relationships, hopelessness, and isolation resonated alongside messages from an independent artist who was clearly thriving on his own terms.

In 2022, LUCKI upped the ante. Future and EMPIRE label-mate Babyface Ray guest on the FLAWLESS LIKE ME album that finds the 26-year-old more comfortable with himself but still admittedly growing. A leading voice in Rap, LUCKI commands the 24-track album, which he considers his debut. To support the album, which nearly entered the Top 10, LUCKI performed sold-out concerts in London and Canada, as well as a sold out 25 city tour in the beginning of 2023. As he prepares to celebrate a decade of originality, authenticity, and consistent growth, LUCKI has cemented an incredible legacy, even if he is still writing it in real-time.

BLACKPINK WORLD TOUR [BORN PINK] IN CINEMAS premieres in more than 110 countries, marking the largest ever global cinema event release for a female group.

Featuring the iconic “Hanok” set that has mesmerized fans and press worldwide, the film showcases an unprecedented production scale, presenting exclusive versions of BLACKPINK’s hit songs unique to this concert. It includes performances from Seoul’s Gocheok Dome alongside footage from cities across the global tour.

BLACKPINK is a girl group from YG Entertainment consisting of JISOO, JENNIE, ROSÉ and LISA. BLACKPINK, who captivated the public at the same time as its debut single [SQUARE ONE] was released in August 2016, has since become the world’s top girl group by making big hits with each song released such as ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ and ‘Kill This Love’.

Thanks to this success, BLACKPINK became the first Korean girl group to be invited to the Coachella Festival, the largest music festival in the United States, in both 2019 and 2023, establishing an unrivaled position in the global music market. In October 2020, BLACKPINK won trophies at numerous awards ceremonies by hitting various global charts, including the U.S. Billboard, with their first full-length album ‘THE ALBUM’. In particular, the album became the first million-seller of the female K-pop group in history, reaching the record of 1.3 million copies of sales volume.

BLACKPINK then wrote a unique new history with their second full-length album [BORN PINK], which was released in 2022. The album has set the record of 2.82 million copies of sales volume, letting BLACKPINK the honor to have the title as the first K-pop girl group to become a ‘double million-seller’. The album also topped the U.S. Billboard 200 and the U.K. official album charts at the same time. This is the first achievement of an Asian female artist and also is the first milestone in 21 years among every girl group around the world.

Moreover, since October 2022, BLACKPINK [BORN PINK] tour, which has been held 66 times in 34 cities for about a year, drew 1.8 million audiences. This is the highest figure ever for a KPOP girl group. If the Coachella Festival in which the girls performed as the first Asian headliner (250,000 total) and Hyde Park in the U.K. (65,000) are added, they have worked with 2.115 million music fans.

BLACKPINK’s influence as a global top artist is getting stronger day by day. They have expanded their influence through continuous collaboration with global pop stars, and all four members are active as ambassadors for famous fashion and beauty brands as representative style icons leading the trend. In addition, the number of subscribers to BLACKPINK’s official YouTube channel surpassed 93 million, ranking first in the field among both male and female artists around the world.

My Next Read: “Forever Changes The Authorized Biography Of Arthur Lee And Love” By John Einarson

Widely hailed as a genius, Arthur Lee was a character every bit as colorful and unique as his music. In 1966, he was the Prince of the Sunset Strip, busy with his pioneering racially mixed band, Love, and accelerating the evolution of California folk-rock by infusing it with jazz and orchestral influences, a process that would climax in a timeless masterpiece, Forever Changes.

Shaped by a Memphis childhood and a South Los Angeles youth, Lee always craved fame. He would achieve his ambition with a mixture of vaulting talent and colossal chutzpah. Drug use and a reticence to tour were his Achilles heels, and he succumbed to a dissolute lifestyle just as superstardom was beckoning.

Despite endorsements from the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, Lee’s subsequent career was erratic and haunted by the shadow of Forever Changes, reaching a nadir with his imprisonment in 1996 for a firearms offence. Redemption followed, culminating in an astonishing postmillennial comeback that found him playing Forever Changes to adoring, multi-generational fans around the world. This upswing was only interrupted by his untimely death from leukemia in 2006.

Written with the full consent and cooperation of Arthur’s widow, Diane Lee, Forever Changes is a meticulously researched biography that includes lengthy extracts from Arthur’s vivid, comic, and poignant memoirs, published here for the first time. Author John Einarson has also amassed dozens of new interviews with the surviving members of Love and with many others who fell into the incomparable Lee’s flamboyant orbit.
