Canadian Alt-Pop Sensation WITH VIOLET Drops New Album “Saturday Nights in Your Sunday Best” and Electrifying Single “That Boy”

Straight out of St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canadian alt-pop band and local faves With Violet are expanding their eclectic sound to new levels with their latest album Saturday Nights in Your Sunday Best and a new single “That Boy.”

The group – comprised of Sarah Newell (vocals & saxophone), Peter “Pete” MacDonald (vocals & keyboards), Matthew Cadigan (guitar), Spencer FitzGerald (bass), and Hunter Madden (drums) – formed in 2018 and have been a local sensation ever since dropping their debut EP Long Story Short, racking up several award nominations and wins and performing at festivals all across NL, including a headlining stint at the Woody Point Spring Thaw Festival in 2023.

Saturday Nights In Your Sunday Best, is a marriage between their two previous EPs, Saturday Nights In and Your Sunday Best, both released in 2023. It’s the culmination of two years’ worth of work and many hours in the studio in which the band decided to whet their fans’ appetites for the final full-length release by dropping bite-sized EPs. The new album features all the songs from the EPs plus some new tracks for a fresh yet familiar listening experience.

The lead single off the album, “That Boy”, is a neon-tinged joyride through the perils of longing and desire, with a feel-good, East Coast vibe that puts one in mind of an ‘80s rom-com. MacDonald’s powerful and emotional vocals seem to both lament and celebrate those whirlwind feelings of temptation that come with being attracted to someone, while With Violet’s signature infectious energy and beats let you know that, regardless of the lyrical subject matter, this is a band that you can be sure will have you on your feet at any live venue, including opening for Barenaked Ladies and Tokyo Police Club at the IceBerg Alley Performance Tent in St. John’s on June 19.

Alt.Dark-Pop Sensation Mikalyn Returns with Haunting New Single ‘Falling Apart’ Ahead of Highly Anticipated EP Release

After jumping onto the music scene at only age 14, Guelph/Toronto, ON’s Alt.Dark-Pop princess Mikalyn has shown no signs of slowing down into adulthood, having already released a slew of singles over the years, including “Blame”, “Ready To Love You”, and “Phases”.

Now, the 22-year-old is back with her latest single, “Falling Apart”, featuring the languid vibe moody vocals that she excels at and has become her signature. It’s in this track that you can really hear the influences of many of Mikalyn’s music idols, including Amy Winehouse, Lana Del Rey, and Lorde.

“Falling Apart is about how you feel after a breakup,” Mikalyn explains. “You’re reflecting on the relationship and admitting how much you’re hurting. It’s about feeling despair and defending yourself from people telling you to simply get over it. It’s about not apologizing for your emotions and inner conflict, because you’re angry but you’re also sad/defeated at the same time. It’s a song about the space and time between breakup and acceptance.”

The Canadian singer is certainly no stranger to these angsty themes in her songs, often touching expertly upon the haunting feelings that come with falling in – and out – of love.

But that’s not all – Mikalyn is also gearing up to release a new EP, Things I Never Said, slated to drop this August. The EP will mark a move away from the EDM genre that Mikalyn has been playing in recently, striving for a more cohesive project that sticks to a single unifying sound.

“As much as I appreciate my time in the EDM sphere and will continue to do EDM, I don’t feel like it’s me anymore,” she says. “This EP will be the first project I put out where all the songs are cohesive, they work together musically.”

This EP will also reunite her with producer/writer Murray Daigle and writer Bobby John, who have been working with the Guelph, Ontario, native since she first started making and releasing music in her teens. “I like how Murray treats my vocals, and Bobby is an amazing co-writer.” She continues, “We wrote for 3 days and did 2 songs a day. The main thing I wanted was to make sure the songs were synth-driven with lots of harmonies. I wasn’t as concerned with following traditional structures lyrically, but more wanted to focus on the sound. I sat with the demos and decided that I liked them all enough to fully produce. I recorded all the vocals for the EP at Phase One Studios in Toronto and got Murray to mix and master them.”

If her last few singles are any indication of what to expect from the new EP, we are definitely in for a real treat.

Kingston’s Roots Rocker Christopher Jackson Unveils New Single “Best Of Me”

Kingston’s multi-instrumentalist Christopher Jackson is thrilled to announce the release of his new single, “Best of Me”.

This production evokes notes of seventies roots rock, alt-country, and blends folky Americana with his own twist. It encapsulates events and experiences in Jackson’s life over the last few years.

““Best of Me” was written about making changes in my life and moving forward,” says Jackson. “Not letting anyone bring me down or get in my way.”

With over 30 years under his belt as a working musician in a variety of bands, Jackson has built a reputation as a true entertainer. He is known for his banter, audience interaction and impromptu musical collaborations.

The album is produced in collaboration with recording engineer Paul “Doc” Halladay. All the vocals and the majority of the instrumentation, including electric/acoustic guitar, bass guitar, drums and mandolin, is performed by Jackson.

The album also features guest musicians Burke Carroll on pedal steel, Matt Weidinger on piano/Hammond organ, Shane Guse on fiddle, Matt Wray on Dobro, Mike Verner on trumpet, and Spencer Evans on piano/clarinet.

Listeners will find “Best Of Me” to be authentic, real and relatable. “I believe people can relate to this song and make it their own because all we really want is to be the best we can be,” says Jackson.

Multi-instrumentalist and solo artist Christopher Jackson was born in Chatham, Ontario and is now based in Kingston, Ontario. After 30 years as a working musician in a variety of bands and session recordings – and six years of entertaining listeners at the popular “Chris Jackson & Friends” Friday night show at venue BluMartini – Jackson decided it was time to put all his experiences together and see where his own writing and music might take him. His debut album carries that personal connection felt at his live shows into his songs.

How to Make the Right Sports Predictions

By Mitch Rice

The main difference between betting on sports and any other game of chance is that the outcome of an event is less dependent on chance. For those seeking reliable bookmakers and valuable betting information, you can visit https://rg.org. Possible outcomes in betting are subject to analysis, and the degree of risk can be at least partially determined by special knowledge and understanding of the sport. We will tell you what is essential for this and what should be analyzed when choosing a bet on sports.

Of course, even in sports, chance can influence the outcome, which means that a continuous winning streak over a long distance is unlikely. Nevertheless, with proper analysis, achieving success for most predictions and gaining an edge over chance in the long run is possible.

Current Shape and Motivation

These two criteria may be fundamental to correctly predicting any sport. It is only sometimes possible to determine the current form and motivation of the athletes. Still, if these components are precise, then an experienced and competent bettor does not need anything else to make a correct prediction in some cases. However, it is always a good idea to be more thorough.

Features of the Sport

Components of sports betting analysis, such as athletes» current form or motivation, are relevant for all sports. In turn, the specificity of a particular sport largely determines the criteria for selecting events for betting.

Each sport has factors that affect the event’s outcome to a greater or lesser extent.

In team sports, one player’s injury or ill health may not affect a match’s outcome. In individual disciplines, however, this factor can be decisive. Also, in some sports, the weather or the condition of the pitch can influence the result of a match, while in others, it does not matter much.

Statistics with an Emphasis on Recent Trends

Statistics are not always publicly available, but they will be helpful when assessing the odds and choosing a bet. The fact is that in most cases, statistics is the primary tool in the hands of the bookmaker. Therefore, the odds in the line already take this factor into account.

Still, you should pay attention to statistics. It is especially worth paying attention to the latest trends and understanding why this happens. In addition, unique or rare statistics of individual game elements or indicators, which are used for betting on such markets in the payout, can be helpful.

Trends and Patterns

Due to successfully filtered statistics, trends and patterns should be singled out separately. Of course, if, under certain circumstances, the result is repeated for a long time, it is impossible to ignore such a fact in the analysis. Here, it is essential to understand how relevant the trend is today. Have you kept the accompanying circumstances the same? And this is already a matter of the bettor’s competence.

Odds Movement and Its Causes

Often, bookmakers change the odds in the line by hundredths or even tenths several times before the match. You can trace the dynamics of bookmaker odds changes on one of the unique services on the web. What can this information tell us, and should we pay attention to it?

You should pay attention to the change of odds when this change is steadily directed in one direction, i.e., the odds are constantly falling or rising.

A rapid drop in the odds usually means massive bets on this outcome. Sometimes, the movement of odds can be associated with an athlete’s injury or any other circumstances that, in the bookmaker’s opinion, will affect the result.

Balancing Fun and Security: Enhancing Safety Measures at Concerts

By Mitch Rice

Here’s a question for our fellow music lovers: Have you ever been to a concert where the energy was electric? Did it not make you feel like you were part of something bigger than yourself; something unforgettable? That’s the magic of live music events—they’re all about losing yourself in the moment and creating memories that last a lifetime.

But we’re here to talk about something equally important: your safety at these concerts. While we all want to have an amazing time, ensuring that everyone stays safe and secure is key to keeping the good vibes going. From navigating through crowds to enjoying epic performances, there’s a delicate balance between having fun and being mindful of our surroundings.

Our goal today is to explore the safety measures that make any concert or music festival a safe entertainment space for artists and their audiences. Let’s begin without any further ado.

Safety Measures Necessary for Keeping Things Smooth

Let’s face it – nobody likes the sound of terms like “robust safety measures” thrown around, especially at concerts. It is, after all, at these places that music lovers can truly let themselves go.

However, while we don’t want to burden you with the safety responsibilities, you should at least know about them, shouldn’t you? After all, your entire seamless concert experience hinges on these measures. In their absence, you might find yourself in a deep mess.

Ready to take a quick walk-through of these safety measures with us? Let’s get going.

Having A Surveillance System in Place

A well-equipped surveillance system at concerts and other large-scale events isn’t just for show. It’s a critical tool for monitoring crowd movements, identifying potential risks, and responding swiftly to any incidents.

But is a surveillance system enough? Traditional security measures – such as metal detectors at entrances and security personnel deployed across the venue – simply won’t cut it nowadays. To deal with a smart audience, organizers must up their game by combining surveillance cameras with AI-driven video analytics technology.

The actionable, real-time data collected on these cameras can work as intelligent data, helping security personnel monitor situations accordingly. The face recognition tool this technology is equipped with also helps keep known offenders from entering the premises.

In case of any potential crime – theft, attack, or abduction – it becomes easier to catch the perpetrator and bring things back to order in no time.

Planning Ahead for Emergency Response

No one likes to think about emergencies during a concert, but being prepared is non-negotiable. For concert organizers, this preparation translates to:

  • Meticulously planning emergency response procedures
  • Training staff in first aid and evacuation protocols
  • Coordinating closely with local authorities to ensure rapid and effective responses when needed.

Crowd Control & Management – Everything to Know

Managing the enthusiastic energy of thousands of concert-goers is both an art and a science. Your first defense against a wild concert crowd is a large staff presence. Having a trained team of event security personnel makes it ten times easier to manage and control the crowd.

But what can you do to prevent such a frenzy beforehand? By solving the audience’s navigation problems, which leads to such scenarios in most cases. Organizers can do this by providing ample signage across the venue. Directions to entrances and exits, washrooms, registration lines, and designated smoking areas are to be prioritized.

Make sure all the signage is simple, bold, and large, to be easily read from afar. Investing in digital signage is also a great alternative you can explore.

: All staff members should have first aid and CPR training in case an emergency happens during the concert and there are injuries in the audience.

Addressing The Potential Threat of Fire

With all the heavy electrical equipment used during concerts, combined with the dense crowd, concerts face the potential threat of fire breaking out. Luckily for us, having a team of firefighters on-site can keep it at bay.

We might not realize it, but these brave heroes put themselves in danger for our safety. They’re vulnerable not only to fire but also to the chemicals present in firefighting foam.

TorHoerman Law notes that the AFFF firefighting foam – which effectively extinguishes all Class B fires – contains PFAS chemicals. Exposure to these chemicals makes them vulnerable to a number of diseases, including several types of cancer.

After this revelation came to light, an AFFF lawsuit was filed by many of the firefighters, demanding its manufacturers take accountability for their actions.

As music lovers as well as conscious citizens, we must be mindful of these threats. It will prevent us from creating any more problems for them, be it at concerts or elsewhere.

The Dynamics of Concerts & Music Festivals

Concerts are undoubtedly like magical realms where music, culture, and community converge to create unforgettable experiences. Ever wondered what makes these events so electric? Here’s what we think:

The Massive Audience and their Camaraderie

Picture this: thousands of fans gathered under the open sky or within the pulsing heart of a venue, all bonded by their love for music. It’s not just about enjoying the tunes; it’s more about the shared thrill.

We’re talking about the high-fives with strangers during your favorite chorus, and the new friendships sparked over a mutual obsession with a band. Aren’t they simply the best?

Science seems to agree. A 2023 study revealed evidence showing the physiological and movement synchronicity of audiences attending a live music concert together. As the audience resonated with the music, their aesthetic experiences led to bodily synchrony.  If that’s not proof of the magic of music, we don’t know what else can be.

Extraordinary Stage Setups & Design

Now, imagine stepping into a world where stages aren’t just stages—they’re masterpieces of sensory delight. Lights dance in sync with the music, turning the atmosphere into a living, breathing spectacle. Massive speaker arrays pump out every beat, making sure you feel the music in your bones.

The stage of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour was one such marvel. The show, referred to as Swift’s most ambitious show to date, saw her perform against different setups that were symbolic of her most popular music videos. There was a doll-house backdrop from Lover, the combination of Evermore and Folklore sets into one, and the 1989 set displaying a Shelby Cobra.

Now that’s a concert we’d all like to be spectators to, won’t we?

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How can I stay safe amidst the large crowd of concerts?

The first safety tip for concerts is to prefer going with a group rather than alone. This ensures you have people watching your back, which comes in handy in large crowds. If that’s not possible, share your live location with trusted friends and family as soon as you get inside.

Are there medical services available at concerts?

To look after the well-being of attendees, all concert venues typically have medical services. Upon arrival, it’s a good idea to locate the nearest medical stations before the concert starts. If you’re struggling to find them on your own, get help from any security personnel.

Are there restrictions on what I can bring to a concert?

Most concerts already have a detailed list of prohibited items on their website. But to get a general idea, you should avoid bringing weapons, drugs, professional recording equipment, and outside food or drinks to a concert. Checking the venue’s specific policies online is also suggested.

To sum it all up, concerts are all about soaking in the good vibes, making unforgettable memories, and rocking out to your favorite tunes. While safety measures might not be the most exciting topic, they’re crucial for keeping the party going without a hitch.

The World Is a Ghetto: 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition & Greatest Hits Two New Releases From The Iconic WAR

In 1973, the best-selling album in America was The World Is a Ghetto by WAR, and to continue the 50th anniversary celebrations of this iconic record, The World Is A Ghetto: 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition will be released as a 4CD and digital set, complementing the limited-edition, widely-acclaimed 5LP version from November 2023’s Record Store Day. In addition, the original 1976 Greatest Hits package containing tracks from The World Is a Ghetto and more will be available on CD and vinyl.

Both will be released via Rhino on July 19th, and are available for pre-order now here.

The World Is A Ghetto: 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition was curated by WAR’s producer, Jerry Goldstein, founding member Lonnie Jordan, and Jeremy Levine. It includes the recently remastered original album, as well as six bonus tracks and “the making of” recordings, which trace the in-studio evolution of each of the six original album tracks from the first note to the master take. All were first released on the vinyl box set, and this marks the first time they will be on CD and streaming platforms. Read more about the project in Goldmine Magazine’s Spring 2024 Cover Story, featuring Jerry Goldstein and Lonnie Jordan.

The Greatest Hits brings together WAR’s classic collection of tracks, including universal favorites “Why Can’t We Be Friends,” “Low Rider,” and “Cisco Kid,” as well as beloved deep cuts like “Gypsy Man” and “Southern Part of Texas,” which demonstrate the breadth, fusion, and originality of the band’s sound and influences. It will be released on CD and vinyl, and fans can learn more about the creation of “Low Rider” in WAR’s recent episode of Song Exploder.

The World Is A Ghetto: 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition’s six bonus tracks were recorded during the sessions for the album and include original jams that later developed into future WAR songs. For example, versions of “War Is Coming” and “L.A. Sunshine” that would appear on Platinum Jazz in 1977. The liner notes were done by Goldstein and Lonnie Jordan (lead singer and founding member), and share insights into the “making of” recordings introduced in the set. Goldstein states these tracks show the songs taking shape in the studio. “The nice part about all these ‘making of’ tracks is that the final take of all of these tracks is the actual final master that we used in The World Is A Ghetto, without edits, without overdubs, just raw.” Jordan cleverly adds, “Then we turned it around…R-A-W to W-A-R.”

In 1972, The World Is a Ghetto soared to the top of the Billboard album and R&B charts, becoming Billboard’s No. 1 Album of the Year for 1973, generating two gold singles, including the title track and “The Cisco Kid,” which shipped gold and remains WAR’s highest-charting song on the Billboard Hot 100. This album also marked the beginning of an extended period of creative and commercial triumph for WAR, boasting more than 20 gold, platinum and multi-platinum records throughout their remarkable career.

Today, WAR’s music provides an inexhaustible source of inspiration for R&B and hip-hop artists. Samples from four of the six songs on The World Is A Ghetto have appeared on tracks by artists like A$AP Mob, Geto Boys, Janet Jackson, and a hip-hop supergroup featuring Method Man, Redman, and Cypress Hill.

WAR continues to tour, and their first UK show in 16 years will take place June 21st, as part of Chaka Khan’s Meltdown at the Royal Festival Hall. Tickets are available here, and the rest of WAR’s upcoming performances for this year’s The World Is a Ghetto 50th Anniversary Tour are on-sale at war.com/tour.
